Buying knit sneakers in Bangladesh
A knit sneaker has an upper knitted to shape from yarn rather than cut and stitched from fabric. The yarn can be recycled polyester, cotton, wool or another fibre, and knitted uppers appear on sandals, boots and casual shoes as well as sports shoes. It often sits on an EVA foam midsole and exports under HS heading 6404, like canvas shoes.
A knit order rises or falls on the upper: the yarn, the knitting machine and the shaped design. A knit sneakers manufacturer in Bangladesh may run its own machines or buy uppers from a knitter, so Roptan asks which, checks the yarn papers and sole tests, and inspects the bulk before it ships.
How to specify a knit sneaker
- Yarn
- Fibre, recycled or virgin, yarn count in dtex or Ne, and colour for each colourway. A seller cannot price or sample a knit upper from the word 'knit'.
- Knitting machine and design file
- Ask which flat-knitting machines make the upper and at what gauge, or which knitter supplies it. A design program sets the shaped panels, so send the file or a reference upper.
- Sole and midsole
- An EVA midsole or a rubber sole, foam and rubber colours, and the outsole pattern. Name a reference shoe if you have no figures.
- Size system and run
- One system, EU, UK, US or Mondopoint (foot length in mm), with the run and pairs per size. Approve fit in more than one size.
- Recycled claim papers
- If the box or label will say recycled, ask for a current GRS certificate and transaction papers for the yarn lot in your order.
- Chemical list
- For the EU, REACH Annex XVII tests on the knitted textile as well as on rubber and foam parts.
Certificates and tests for knit sneakers
- GRS (Global Recycled Standard)
- The certificate behind a recycled-yarn claim. See it in date, with papers that tie your lot of yarn to it, before the claim is printed.
- OEKO-TEX Standard 100
- Tests textile parts for harmful substances. A knit upper is textile from collar to toe, so it is the part to certify.
- REACH Annex XVII entry 72
- Limits 33 CMR substances in footwear and clothing textiles, applying from November 2020. It reaches the knitted upper, not only the sole.
- ISO 17708:2018 and ISO 20871:2018
- Whole-shoe upper and sole adhesion, cemented shoes included, and outsole abrasion for any sole material, each with a pass value.
Lead times and delivery
Roptan publishes no standard figure, because the time depends on the order. Certified or imported yarn, a newly programmed upper, extra sample rounds, a new sole mould and lab tests add time; stock yarn and an existing sole shorten it. Roptan confirms the sample date, the bulk date and the minimum per colourway in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your warehouse or stores in cartons packed by size and colourway, with the packing list, lab reports, inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). The final check samples the lot to ISO 2859-1 at an AQL written into the order.
Buying knit sneakers for export
For importers, Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with a REX origin statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS papers, the GRS and test reports, and the inspection report. Customs decides the sub-line inside heading 6404. On EPB data for FY2025-26, India, Spain, France, the United States and Germany were the main buyers of the heading, in that order.
Questions buyers ask
Can knit sneakers be made from recycled polyester?
Yes. Recycled polyester is one of the usual yarns for knitted shoe uppers, with cotton, wool and blends as the others. The recycled claim belongs to the yarn, not the shoe, so before you print it ask for a current GRS certificate and the transaction papers for the yarn used in your order, and keep both with the inspection report.
Are knitted uppers only for sports shoes?
No. Knitted uppers are also used on sandals, boots and casual shoes. Give the maker the end use with the design, since the yarn and the sole follow it.
Which tests matter most for a knit sneaker?
Upper and sole adhesion to ISO 17708, since a knit upper is usually cemented to its sole, and outsole abrasion to ISO 20871. For the EU, add REACH tests on the textile upper as well as the rubber and foam.
Does Bangladesh export knit sneakers?
Yes, under heading 6404 with other textile-upper shoes. That heading made up about 0.62% of Bangladesh's goods exports in FY2025-26 on EPB data, and non-leather footwear exports grew about 120% in the decade to FY2024.
How soon will I hear back about sneakers and sports shoes?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
