Buying running shoes in Bangladesh

A running shoe is built round its midsole, a foam layer that is usually EVA, the usual shock absorber in sports shoes. Above it sits a light textile upper; below it, rubber where the outsole wears. Brands and importers buy them in colourways across size runs. Customs may class them under HS 6404 11, sports and training shoes with textile uppers.

Two numbers set how a running shoe feels underfoot: stack height and drop. A running shoes manufacturer in Bangladesh should build to both, so Roptan writes them into the order in mm, has bulk pairs measured against them, and asks for cushioning, bond and wear tests before the shoes leave.

Kinds of running shoe

Zero-drop running shoes

Heel and forefoot stack are the same height. Choose it when the design calls for a level foot, and write 0 mm in the order so the bulk is measured against it.

Heel-to-toe drop shoes

The heel stands higher than the forefoot: 40 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot is an 8 mm drop. Write your target drop in mm.

High-stack cushioned shoes

More foam between foot and ground. No standard range defines high or low stack, so give both heel and forefoot heights.

Kids' running shoes

Smaller sizes of the same build, with different rules: the cushioning test below excludes children's shoes, and US lead limits apply to children's footwear.

How to specify a running shoe

Stack height
Heel and forefoot stack in mm, foam and outsole between foot and ground. With no standard range, a single number usually means the heel only, so give both.
Drop
Heel stack minus forefoot stack, in mm. Write the target and the tolerance, and have bulk pairs measured against it.
Midsole foam
Name the foam, usually EVA, its colour and its shape. Ask for the cushioning result on the finished shoe, not on a foam sheet.
Weight
Weight per shoe in grams at a named size, with a tolerance, since foam, overlays and outsole rubber all add to it. Have bulk pairs weighed against it.
Outsole
Where the rubber sits, its colour and the tread. Set an abrasion pass value under the footwear method.
Size system and run
One system, EU, UK, US or Mondopoint (foot length in mm), with the run and pairs per size. Approve fit in more than one size.
Chemical list
For the EU, REACH tests on foam, rubber and textile parts. Black rubber usually carries more PAH risk, because carbon black can contain PAHs.

Tests for running shoes

ASTM F1976-24
Impact attenuation of athletic shoe cushioning: an 8.5 kg mass dropped from 30 to 70 mm on the shoe. Its scope excludes shoes the maker classes as children's.
ISO 17708:2018
Whole-shoe upper and sole adhesion for cemented and other constructions, with ageing conditions for production control. Ask for results on bulk pairs.
ISO 17707:2005
Outsole flex resistance, measured as cut growth. It applies to outsoles up to 30 N longitudinal rigidity, so a very stiff sole falls outside it.
ISO 20871:2018
Outsole abrasion for any sole material. Write the pass value into the order.
REACH Annex XVII entry 72
For the EU: limits 33 CMR substances in footwear and clothing textiles, applying from November 2020.

What moves the price of a running shoe

  • Midsole: the foam, its thickness and any shaped or two-colour midsole add material and steps.
  • Sole tooling: a new midsole and outsole need moulds in every size; an existing sole unit does not.
  • Upper: overlays, bonded details and linings add parts and steps.
  • Testing: cushioning, adhesion, flex and abrasion tests on bulk pairs, plus chemical tests per material.
  • Colourways: each midsole and outsole colour needs matching and its own approval.

Lead times and delivery

Roptan publishes no standard figure, because the time depends on the order. New midsole and outsole moulds, extra sample rounds to hit the stack and drop, imported upper materials and lab tests add time; an existing sole unit and stock materials shorten it. Roptan confirms the sample date, the bulk date and the minimum per colourway in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to your warehouse or stores in cartons packed by size and colourway, with the packing list, the test and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Final inspection samples the lot to ISO 2859-1 at an AQL agreed in the order, with stack and drop on the measurement sheet.

Buying running shoes for export

Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with a REX origin statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS papers and the test reports. Customs, not the seller, decides whether a style is 6404 11, training shoes and the like, or 6404 19. On EPB data for FY2025-26, the 6404 19 sub-line was the larger of the two, so do not read every running shoe as 6404 11.

What we check for this order

  • Stack and drop measuredHeel and forefoot stack measured on bulk pairs in several sizes against the order, so the shoe matches its spec sheet.
  • Cushioning reportAn ASTM F1976 result on the finished adult shoe, from the bulk, if you will make any cushioning claim.
  • Bond on bulk pairsUpper and sole adhesion to ISO 17708 on pairs from the bulk, since a careful sample can pass where bulk fails.
  • Licence, ERC and auditsTrade licence and Export Registration Certificate in the name on the quote, and any BSCI, SMETA or WRAP audit in date.

Questions buyers ask

What does heel-to-toe drop mean?

Drop is the difference in foam height between the heel and the forefoot, in mm. A shoe with 40 mm at the heel and 32 mm at the forefoot has an 8 mm drop; a zero-drop shoe has the same height at both. Put the target drop and a tolerance in the order.

Should the brief give one stack number or two?

Two. There is no standard range for stack height, and one listed number usually means the heel. Give heel and forefoot stack in mm, so the drop follows, and have both measured on bulk pairs.

Is there a standard cushioning test for running shoes?

Yes. ASTM F1976-24 measures impact attenuation of athletic shoe cushioning by dropping an 8.5 kg mass from 30 to 70 mm. Ask for results on finished shoes from the bulk.

Can the same cushioning test be used for kids' running shoes?

No. ASTM F1976-24 says it is not intended for shoes the maker classes as children's. For children's sizes sold in the US, the lead limits under CPSIA and a Children's Product Certificate matter more; see our kids' sneakers page.

How soon will I hear back about sneakers and sports shoes?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
