Buying silica gel in Bangladesh

Silica gel is a porous, amorphous form of silicon dioxide, usually made by acidifying sodium silicate and drying the gel. It holds water on the surface of its pores and stays hard when saturated. It is sold as beads or granules a few millimetres across, loose for air dryers and in permeable sachets that keep packed goods, dry food and drug containers dry.

Exporters packing cartons for a sea voyage and plants running desiccant air dryers both buy it. As your silica gel supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes the grade, indicator and pack weight into the order, compares verified sellers on that, and checks the indicator and lot papers before the gel ships.

Kinds of silica gel

Type A, fine pore gel

Clear beads with pores of about 2.5 nm, usually the grade for drying and moisture-proofing, in sachets and in air dryers.

Type B, wide pore gel

Translucent white beads with pores of about 4.5 to 7.0 nm, usually sold as a liquid adsorbent and drier.

Plain white gel

Carries no indicator. Choose it for sachets where nobody needs to see saturation.

Orange indicating gel

Carries a cobalt-free indicator such as methyl violet: orange when dry, green when wet. Choose it when you need to see the gel is spent, above all on EU-bound goods.

Blue indicating gel

Blue when dry, pink when wet, and usually coloured with cobalt(II) chloride. Read the EU classification below before choosing it.

Sachets

Gel packed in permeable sachets of a stated gram weight for cartons and food or drug packs. Specify the weight per sachet and the cover material.

How to specify silica gel

Use
Air or gas dryer, export cartons, or food and drug packs. The use sets the grade, the indicator and the packing.
Grade and bead size
Fine or wide pore, and bead or granule size in mm.
Indicator
None, cobalt-free orange or cobalt blue. Put the choice in writing; on EU-bound goods, ask for cobalt-free gel.
Adsorption capacity
Ask for capacity at a stated relative humidity and temperature. Gel can usually take up to about 37 per cent of its own weight in water in very humid air.
Sachet weight and cover
State grams per sachet, the cover material and how many go in each carton, sized for the humidity at the loading port and on the voyage.
Moisture and packing
Set a maximum moisture as packed and ask for sealed drums or moisture-barrier bags. Gel in an open drum loads water before it is used.
Dryer duty
For a desiccant air dryer, give the dryer type and dew point target. Gel suits general drying; a very low dew point may need molecular sieve.

Rules and papers for a silica gel supplier in Bangladesh

EU classification of cobalt dichloride
Annex VI of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 classifies cobalt dichloride as Carc. 1B, may cause cancer by inhalation, and Repr. 1B. For EU-bound cartons, use cobalt-free indicating gel or plain gel.
REACH Annex XVII, entry 61
Dimethyl fumarate, a mould-preventing biocide once put in sachets in footwear boxes and leather furniture, may not exceed 0.1 mg/kg in articles. For footwear or leather cartons, get written confirmation of none.
Safety data sheet to GHS
Ask for one with each lot, stating the indicator, so the carton line and your buyer know what the sachet holds.
Contact declaration
For food or drug packs, a declaration for the gel and the sachet cover, since the pack maker will usually ask for it.

What moves the price of silica gel

  • Indicator: cobalt-free indicating gel usually costs more than plain gel.
  • Pore grade and bead size.
  • Sachets: the gram weight and the cover material.
  • Packing: drum or bag size, and moisture-barrier packing.
  • Quantity: gel is made in very large volumes, so the price per kg usually falls on larger lots.

Lead times and delivery

Gel a seller already holds in stock usually ships soonest. Sachets at a set weight and cover, cobalt-free gel in volume and wide pore grades can take longer, especially when they are imported to order and clear customs at Chattogram. Roptan confirms the date and the minimum in the quote.

We deliver to your plant, store or carton line across Bangladesh in sealed drums, moisture-barrier bags or sachet cartons, with the lot number matching the certificate, the safety data sheet to GHS and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Keep cartons closed until the line needs them.

What we check for this order

  • Indicator typeWe check the indicator matches the order, and that gel for EU-bound goods is cobalt-free or plain, with the seller's declaration.
  • No DMF in sachetsFor footwear or leather cartons, we get the seller's written confirmation that the sachets contain no dimethyl fumarate.
  • Lot certificateWe check adsorption capacity at the stated humidity, moisture as packed and bead size on the lot certificate.
  • Seals and beadsWe check seals are unbroken and beads are not cracked or powdered, and weigh a sample of sachets against the stated weight.

Questions buyers ask

Is blue silica gel allowed in cartons going to Europe?

Ask your buyer, but avoid it where you can. Blue gel usually contains cobalt dichloride, which EU law classifies as Carc. 1B, may cause cancer by inhalation. For EU-bound cartons, use cobalt-free orange indicating gel or plain white gel, and keep the seller's declaration in your shipping file.

How many grams of silica gel does an export carton need?

There is no single figure. It depends on the carton volume, the goods, how damp they are when packed, and the humidity at the loading port and on the voyage. Daily humidity in Bangladesh reached 94 to 100 per cent in July in readings from 1986. Your buyer's packing manual may set a weight; if not, ask the seller to size it.

Can silica gel be reused?

Usually, yes. Saturated gel can be regenerated by heating it to about 120 degrees Celsius for one to two hours, and then reused many times with little loss of efficiency. Some types crack when they touch liquid water, so keep loose gel away from spills.

Do you supply sachets ready for the carton line?

Yes. Give the gram weight per sachet, the cover material and the number per carton. We source sachets of that weight from a verified seller, weigh a sample against the stated weight and deliver them sealed, so they stay dry until your line uses them.

How soon will I hear back about filter media?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
