Buying anthracite filter media in Bangladesh

Filter anthracite is hard, high-carbon coal that has been crushed, washed, dried and graded into angular grains. In a dual or multimedia filter it forms the upper layer over quartz sand; in a deep-bed filter it can be the only layer. Pressure filters, gravity filters, tertiary effluent filters and swimming pool filters use it. Filter-grade anthracite is usually imported; China mines more than three quarters of the world's anthracite.

The layer has to settle back in place after every backwash, and the grains have to hold to size. As your anthracite filter media supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan writes the grade, effective size and uniformity into the order, compares verified sellers on that and checks the lot's sieve analysis before the bags leave.

Kinds of anthracite filter media

Grade 1, fine

About 14x30 mesh, with an effective size of about 0.60 to 0.80 mm in one distributor's table. Used where the filter design calls for a finer upper layer.

Grade 1.5, medium

About 10x20 mesh, with an effective size of about 0.85 to 0.95 mm in the same table.

Grade 2, coarse

About 4x12 mesh, with an effective size of about 1.70 to 2.00 mm in that table. Always state the effective size alongside the grade number.

Dual media upper layer

Anthracite over sand. Distributor data credits it with clean separation from the sand during backwash, a lower pressure drop and longer runs between backwashes.

Single layer deep bed

Anthracite as the only medium, at a bed depth of at least 500 mm in one distributor's guidance.

How to specify anthracite filter media

Effective size and uniformity
The two figures from a sieve analysis that define the grade. One table lists a maximum uniformity coefficient of 1.7 for grade 1.
Oversize and undersize
Set a limit in the order; one distributor keeps both under 5 per cent. Fines wash out in backwash and oversize grains upset the layering.
Specific gravity and acid solubility
Take both values from your filter specification and put them in the order, so the lot is tested against them.
Hardness, break and wear rate
Ask for Mohs hardness and the break and wear rates on the lot.
Composition
Fixed carbon, volatile matter, sulphur and moisture. Data sheets differ, so agree the limits per order.
Bed volume and bulk density
Filters are filled by volume and anthracite is sold by weight. Bulk density is about 0.8 g/cm3 but varies with origin, so use the lot's own figure.
Iron in the raw water
Dissolved iron is often high in oxygen-poor groundwater, so test your own source. One distributor reports that precipitated iron and manganese do not stick to anthracite.

Standards an anthracite filter media supplier in Bangladesh should cite

EN 12909
The European standard for anthracite that treats water for human consumption, current edition 2012. For drinking water filters, ask for a certificate of compliance with it.
EN 12902
The European test methods for inorganic supporting and filtering materials used on drinking water, which cover filter media such as anthracite.
AWWA B100
The American Water Works Association standard for granular filter material, including anthracite; the current revision is B100-25. Distributors cite it for grades.
Sieve analysis and specific gravity
Ask for both on the delivered lot with the test method named, so results from two sellers compare.

What moves the price of anthracite filter media

  • Source and quality of the raw coal.
  • Processing: crushing, washing, drying and grading each add cost.
  • Tight limits on effective size, uniformity and oversize.
  • Hardness and break rate limits stricter than a standard grade.
  • Certification: an EN 12909 or AWWA B100 certificate for drinking water duty.
  • Bags or big bags, and freight, since anthracite is bulky and imported.

Lead times and delivery

If a seller holds your grade in Bangladesh, delivery is usually quick. Other grades are usually imported to order, so sea freight to Chattogram, customs clearance and a lab sieve test on the lot add time, and a drinking water certificate can add more. Minimums depend on the seller and on bags or big bags. Roptan confirms the date and the minimum in the quote.

We deliver to your plant or site across Bangladesh in bags or big bags marked with grade and lot number, with the certificate and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Check the quantity on receipt, because bulk density varies with origin. Store the bags dry and apart from sand and other media until loading. If you want the filter loaded, we arrange it through the seller.

What we check for this order

  • Sieve analysis for your lotWe check effective size, uniformity coefficient, oversize and undersize on the lot's sieve analysis against the grade in your order.
  • Gravity and densityWe check specific gravity and bulk density on the certificate against your filter specification and the kilograms ordered.
  • Strength and solubilityWe check hardness, break rate and acid solubility results against the limits agreed in the order.
  • Drinking water papersFor potable filters, we check that the EN 12909 or AWWA B100 conformity document covers the grade and lot supplied.

Questions buyers ask

Why does anthracite go on top of the sand?

It separates cleanly from the sand during backwash, so the bed settles back in order, and distributor data credits it with a lower pressure drop and longer runs between backwashes. Order it at the grade your filter design names, so the two layers stay distinct.

How deep should the anthracite layer be?

Follow your filter design. As a guide, one distributor gives at least 500 mm when anthracite is the only medium; in a dual media filter the designer splits the depth with the sand below. Send the filter drawing and we work out the volume and kilograms from it.

How do I convert a bed volume into kilograms?

Multiply the bed volume in cubic metres by the bulk density. Data sheets give about 800 to 830 kg per cubic metre, so a 2 cubic metre layer takes roughly 1,600 to 1,660 kg, but density varies with origin. Use the lot's figure and add a loading margin.

Can pool filter anthracite go into a drinking water plant?

Only with the right papers. Anthracite for water intended for human consumption should carry a certificate of compliance with EN 12909, or meet AWWA B100, and as a natural mineral it is usually crushed, washed and graded first. For effluent and pool filters, the specification in your order governs.

How soon will I hear back about filter media?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
