Buying serving platters in Bangladesh
A platter is a large serving dish, shared at the table or set on a buffet, in oval, round, rectangular, square or octagonal shapes. Hotels, caterers, banquet halls and restaurants in Bangladesh buy platters for buffets and shared service, and importers buy them to complete tableware ranges. Ceramic platters compete with metal, glass and wood.
Platters are difficult to fire true: they are large, flat and often uneven in section. Roptan takes your brief to a verified serving platter manufacturer in Bangladesh, sets flatness and heat limits in the order, checks samples and the bulk, and delivers.
How to brief a serving platter manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Shape and size
- Length and width, or diameter, in centimetres with a tolerance. Check them against your warmers, trays, trolleys and dishwasher racks.
- Depth
- Give the internal depth. A platter 25 mm deep or less counts as flatware for lead tests; a deeper one is hollowware.
- Flatness
- Large porcelain pieces can warp in the kiln, so write a rocking and warp limit into the order and check it on samples.
- Heat use
- Say whether platters go into an oven, onto a warmer or from fridge to table, then ask for a thermal shock test on the platter.
- Decoration
- Name the route and where the colour sits. The whole well is food-contact surface, and gold lines arc in a microwave.
- Weight
- State a maximum weight per piece. Staff carry full platters, and heavy pieces add freight.
Tests for serving platters
- EU Directive 84/500/EEC
- A shallow platter is Category 1: lead up to 0.8 mg/dm² and cadmium up to 0.07 mg/dm² of food-contact surface, leached with 4% acetic acid for 24 hours.
- US FDA flatware guidelines
- Lead up to 3.0 µg/mL and cadmium up to 0.5 µg/mL, averaged over six units. A deeper platter falls under the hollowware levels instead.
- EN 1183
- The thermal shock test for glazed ceramic and glass ware: the evidence behind any oven-to-table or warmer claim.
- ASTM C368
- Impact at the centre and chipping at the rim of flatware. Chipping depends greatly on the contour of the rim.
Lead times and delivery
Large pieces cannot take quick cooling in the kiln, and a new shape needs moulds and trial firings before bulk, so allow time for careful firing and for sorting out warped pieces. Kilns need steady gas for about 24 hours; a cut can scrap the ware inside, and a restart usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum in the quote.
Roptan delivers to hotels, caterers and banquet halls across Bangladesh. Each platter is checked for cracks on unloading, turned over as well as from above, and damage is photographed for the claim agreed in the quote. You receive the packing list, the lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying serving platters for export
Porcelain platters go under HS heading 6911 and stoneware under 6912. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with the lab report and, for EU buyers, the declaration of compliance. Large flat pieces need careful packing, so agree the carton, any transit test such as ISTA 1A or 2A with its levels, and the breakage claim process before shipment.
Questions buyers ask
Can ceramic platters go in the oven?
Only when tested. Porcelain is rated highly for thermal shock resistance, while a technical source calls stoneware more brittle. Ask for EN 1183 results on your platter, state the oven temperature and use, and never assume it from the body name.
Why do large platters warp?
Porcelain is fired close to its melting point, so large flat pieces can distort in the kiln, and pieces of uneven section can crack if cooled quickly. Set a flatness limit and approve it on samples from a production firing.
Is a platter tested like a plate or a bowl?
It depends on depth. At 25 mm or less it is flatware, judged per area in the EU and on a six-unit average in the US. Deeper, it is hollowware, judged per litre and unit by unit. Ask the maker for the measured depth.
Can platters match the plates we already use?
Often, if the maker has your glaze and decoration. Send a plate from your current range so the colour can be matched. The platter still needs its own lead result, because a different shape counts as a different article.
How soon will I hear back about ceramics and tableware?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
