Buying mugs and cups in Bangladesh

A mug has one vertical handle and usually no saucer, and typically holds about 250 to 350 ml. A teacup is smaller and usually comes with a matching saucer. Offices and brands in Bangladesh order printed mugs as gifts, hotels and cafés buy cups and saucers by pattern, and importers buy mugs for retail.

Mugs carry decoration right up to the mouth, and US rules set a tighter lead guideline for cups and mugs than for bowls. Roptan takes your brief to a verified mug and cup manufacturer in Bangladesh, has the print and glaze tested on your mug, checks the bulk and delivers.

Kinds of mug and cup

Porcelain mugs

Vitrified and impermeable, with good resistance to thermal shock, so they take hot tea and coffee well. Choose porcelain for office, hotel and retail mugs.

Stoneware mugs

Heavier and more opaque, usually only partly vitrified, so some absorption remains. Choose it for café and craft-look ranges, with an absorption limit in the order.

Decal-printed mugs

A printed film is laid on the glazed mug and fired at about 700 to 750 °C, so the image sinks into the glaze. Choose it for logos and multi-colour artwork.

Teacups and saucers

Smaller cups paired with a saucer, usually sold as a set. Chinese-style teacups are very small, about 20 to 50 ml. Choose them for hotel and restaurant tea service.

Cups with metallic rims

Gold or platinum lines fired on over the glaze at a low temperature. They suit formal service, but they arc in a microwave.

How to brief a mug and cup manufacturer in Bangladesh

Capacity
Give brimful capacity in millilitres with a tolerance. FDA describes a typical cup or mug as holding about 240 mL.
Handle
Send a drawing or sample handle with finger room and thickness, and approve it on a filled mug, not an empty one.
Print route and colours
Name the route (decal, inglaze or underglaze), the number of colours and the print area. Each overglaze colour adds a firing.
Decoration at the lip
Say where decoration may sit. The test fills the mug to within 1 mm of the brim, so a band near the lip sits inside the lead result.
Inside glaze
State the inside colour. Bright orange, red and yellow are a known lead risk, so test those colours wherever they sit.
Washing and heat
State domestic or commercial dishwashing, the cycles you expect and whether mugs go in a microwave.

Lead, heat and wash tests for mugs and cups

US FDA cups and mugs
Lead up to 0.5 µg/mL for any one of six units, the same tight level as pitchers. Cadmium falls under small hollowware, also 0.5 µg/mL.
EU Directive 84/500/EEC
Mugs are Category 2: lead up to 4.0 mg/L and cadmium up to 0.3 mg/L, with the mug filled to within 1 mm of overflowing.
ASTM C556
Tests how overglaze decoration resists household detergents. It is a domestic method; for hotel machines, add the catering test EN 12875-5.
EN 1183
Thermal shock: whether a cup cracks when hot tea or coffee goes in. Ask for it on your own shape and body.

What moves the price of a mug or cup

  • Print: each extra colour, decal or metallic line adds a firing and its set-up.
  • Print area: a wrap-around design usually costs more to print and place than one small logo.
  • Body: stoneware is usually cheaper than porcelain.
  • Sets: a cup with a matching saucer is two pieces to make, test and pack.
  • Testing: each print and glaze needs its own lead result before bulk.

Lead times and delivery

A stock mug with a new decal is usually the quickest route, since the maker already makes the mug. A new shape or handle needs moulds and trial firings first, and every new print needs a lead test before bulk. Kilns need steady gas for about 24 hours, and a restart after a cut usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum per design in the quote.

Roptan delivers mugs to offices, hotels, cafés and shops across Bangladesh. Say in the brief if you need each mug in its own gift box. Cartons are counted on arrival and broken handles are recorded with photos. You receive the packing list, the lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying mugs and cups for export

Porcelain mugs go under HS heading 6911 and stoneware under 6912. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with the lab report and, for the EU, the declaration of compliance. For the US, a 'lead free' line on the box needs a test on the actual mug behind it: FDA says ware that releases lead in its test should not carry that label.

What we check for this order

  • Test on the printed mugWe check the lead and cadmium report covers your print, colours and glaze, rim included.
  • Print position and colourWe compare sample prints with your approved artwork for position, colour and sharpness.
  • Handle joinsWe inspect handle joins for cracks and gaps, where a fault makes a mug unsafe with hot drinks.
  • CapacityWe measure brimful capacity on samples against the tolerance in your order.

Questions buyers ask

What is the minimum order for logo mugs?

It depends on the print route and the maker. A logo decal on a stock mug needs less set-up than a new shape or a glaze colour made for you. Roptan states the minimum for your design in the quote; tell us your yearly need too, so re-orders can be planned.

Will the logo survive the dishwasher?

It depends on the decoration route, the colours and the firing, so do not rely on the print method alone. Ask for a dishwasher test on the printed mug, at the cycles and machine type you expect, before you approve bulk.

Can the box say lead free?

Only if a test on the actual mug backs it. FDA says ceramicware that releases lead in its test should not be labelled lead free. Ask for an accredited lab report on each print and glaze, and keep it on file.

Why do bright colours need extra testing?

FDA names brightly decorated ware in orange, red or yellow as a problem type, because lead is often used with those pigments. Test every bright colour that touches food or the lip, not only the white body.

How soon will I hear back about ceramics and tableware?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
