Buying dinner plates in Bangladesh
A dinner plate is the largest everyday plate in a set, usually 23 to 33 cm across, though each maker sets its own sizes. It has a well for the food, a lip, a rim edge and a base. Hotels, restaurants, caterers and shops in Bangladesh buy plates in bulk, and importers abroad buy them by the container.
Plate orders usually fail at the edges: a warped plate that rocks, a rim that chips, a coloured band that fails the lead test. Roptan takes your brief to a verified dinner plate manufacturer in Bangladesh, writes those limits into the order, checks a sample and the bulk, and delivers.
How to brief a dinner plate manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Diameter and depth
- Give the outer diameter in centimetres with a tolerance, and the depth of the well. Depth decides which lead limit applies: 25 mm or less counts as flatware.
- Edge profile
- Draw the lip width and the shape of the rim edge. Rim contour affects chipping more than rim thickness does, so fix the edge, not only the weight.
- Flatness
- State how far a plate may rock on a flat table. Porcelain is fired close to its melting point and large flat pieces can warp, so set a limit.
- Decoration route
- Name it: underglaze under a clear glaze, inglaze fired into the glaze, or overglaze fixed by a second, lower firing. Overglaze bands need their own detergent check.
- Metallic lines
- Gold, platinum and lustre arc in a microwave. Keep them off plates that staff may reheat food on.
- Washing
- State commercial or domestic dishwashing and the number of cycles you expect. The dishwashing standard sets no cycle count, so the figure must come from you.
Lead, cadmium and strength tests for dinner plates
- EU Directive 84/500/EEC
- A plate is a Category 1 article: lead release up to 0.8 mg/dm² and cadmium up to 0.07 mg/dm², leached with 4% acetic acid for 24 hours. Goods also need a declaration of compliance.
- US FDA flatware guidelines
- For plates, lead up to 3.0 µg/mL averaged over six units, and cadmium up to 0.5 µg/mL. FDA may detain imports above them. ASTM C738 is one accepted lab method.
- ASTM C368 and ASTM C554
- C368 tests impact at the plate centre and chipping at the rim. C554 tests crazing by thermal shock and is the preferred method for vitreous ware such as porcelain.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends mostly on whether the maker already has your shape: a stock plate with a new decal moves faster than one needing new moulds and trial firings. Gas is the main risk: a kiln needs steady pressure for about 24 hours, and after a shutdown it usually takes 48 to 72 hours to restart. Roptan confirms dates and the minimum per pattern in the quote.
Roptan delivers to hotels, restaurants and shops anywhere in Bangladesh. Plates are counted by size and pattern on unloading, and chipped pieces are photographed and settled under the quote's terms. You receive the packing list, the lab reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying dinner plates for export
Porcelain plates enter under HS heading 6911 and stoneware under 6912; your broker confirms the line for bone china. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram with the lab report and, for the EU, the declaration of compliance. The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg apply much lower national limits from 2026 under a Benelux decision, so name your market before testing. The quote also states your duty position after LDC graduation.
Questions buyers ask
What size should a hotel dinner plate be?
Reference lists put dinner plates between 23 and 33 cm, and each maker sets its own sizes. Measure your plate warmers, racks and dishwasher baskets first, then give the diameter in centimetres with a tolerance, and size side plates and chargers with it.
Can a plate with a gold rim go in the microwave?
No. Gold, platinum and lustre are metals, and in a microwave they arc and spark. If plates may be reheated, choose a coloured band under or in the glaze, and keep metallic plates for service only.
Why does every decorated plate need its own lead test?
Because the limits apply to the article as made. The EU rule pools results only across plates of the same shape, size, decoration and glaze, so a new band or decal is a new article, and the whole food-contact face, decorated lip included, is tested.
Is a deep soup plate tested like a dinner plate?
Not always. In EU and US rules, a plate that can be filled to 25 mm or less is a flat article (Category 1 in the EU, flatware for FDA). A deeper soup plate is hollowware, with limits per litre instead of per area, so ask the maker for the measured depth.
How soon will I hear back about ceramics and tableware?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
