Buying packaged STP in Bangladesh

A packaged STP is a sewage treatment plant built in a workshop, taken to site by road and set on a prepared base. Most are versions of extended aeration, though packaged MBBR, SBR and membrane units are sold too. Apartment blocks, hotels, hospitals and factories in Bangladesh buy them where the central sewer does not reach, which in Dhaka is still much of the city.

Kinds of packaged STP

Extended aeration package plant

The usual packaged design. Sewage stays in aeration for typically 24 to 48 hours, with a sludge age of 12 to 20 days, which keeps the biology stable. Choose it where no full-time operator will be on site, with a service contract to cover it.

Packaged MBBR

Plastic carriers in the aeration tank hold the bacteria as a biofilm, so a smaller tank treats the same load. Choose it for a small plant room, and ask for the carrier type and fill.

Packaged MBR

Membranes hold the biomass in the tank, so the plant runs at higher solids on a smaller footprint. Fouling is a critical operating problem: choose it only with a service contract that covers the membranes.

Modular packaged plant

Larger plants are built in sections that travel by road and are welded together at site. Choose it when one load cannot carry enough tank, and allow time for the site welds and their inspection.

How to specify a packaged STP

Users and population equivalent: Give residents, staff and visitors by building use. One common definition takes 1 PE as 60 g of BOD and 200 litres of sewage a day; ask the seller which figures it used.
Above ground or buried: Say where the tanks will sit. An empty buried tank in wet or flooded ground can float up during desludging, so ask how it is anchored or ballasted.
Tank material: FRP (GRP), coated mild steel or stainless steel. For FRP tanks ask for the laminate specification; EN 13121-3 covers the design and workmanship of GRP tanks and vessels for use above ground.
Kitchen waste: Hotels, hospitals and canteens need a grease trap ahead of the plant. Traps run from about 35 litres to 45,000 litres or more and need regular emptying.
Aeration and oxygen: Ask for duty and standby blowers and a dissolved oxygen reading of about 2 mg/L in the aeration tank at handover. Low oxygen shows up as poor settling and a poor outlet.
Road access and lifting: Package plants are sized to travel by road. Check the lane, gate, overhead cables and crane position before the order is placed.

Papers to ask a packaged STP supplier in Bangladesh for

ECR 2023 discharge limits: Rules 31 and 32 of the Environment Conservation Rules 2023 set the water quality and liquid waste standards. The plant must meet the ECR 2023 limits; the design basis should state them.
EN 12566-3: A European standard for packaged or site-assembled domestic plants for up to 50 PT. It is a type-test reference for small units only, not a Bangladesh rule, and most building plants are larger.
ISO/IEC 17025 and ISO 5815-1: Send outlet samples to a lab accredited to ISO/IEC 17025. BOD is measured to ISO 5815-1 and the result takes five days, so plan the acceptance test around it.

What moves the price of a packaged STP

Process: extended aeration needs more tank for its long retention; MBBR and MBR use less tank and more equipment.
Design population and the litres and BOD per person assumed, which set tank volume and blower size.
Tank material, wall thickness and coating, and whether buried tanks need anchoring.
The service period, operator training and sludge removal, included or quoted as extras.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the plant, so Roptan quotes dates for each order, not a standard figure. Imported units take longer for sea freight and customs clearance at Chattogram, as do modular plants welded at site and jobs with late drawings or a late base. A unit built in Bangladesh to an approved drawing is usually quicker. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum in the quote.

Questions buyers ask

Does a packaged STP run without an operator?

No. Package plants are designed to need little attention, but small plants still need competent operation and maintenance. Sludge that stops settling, known as bulking, spoils the outlet and takes skill to correct, so plan for a trained operator or a service contract.

Can a packaged STP go in a basement?

Yes, if the room is planned for it. Give the clear height and a lifting route, keep panels above flood level and ventilate for sewer gas. EN 12255-10, the European safety principles for treatment plants, is a checklist for covers and confined-space entry.

Does a building STP need DoE clearance?

It depends on the project. ECR 2023 sorts projects into green, yellow, orange and red; green needs an environmental clearance certificate only, the others need location clearance as well. Have your consultant confirm the category and papers before the plant is ordered.

Do RAJUK rules require an STP?

Possibly. A Dhaka Tribune report of 31 July 2026 quoted RAJUK's Chief Town Planner as saying the 2025 Building Construction Rules require STPs in areas without effective sewerage coverage. It gave no threshold, so confirm with RAJUK or your architect.

How soon will I hear back about STP?
