Buying metal spectacle frames in Bangladesh

A metal spectacle frame has its rims, bridge, lugs and temples made only of metal or metal alloys, such as stainless steel, titanium or a nickel-copper alloy. Optical chains and brands abroad buy them to glaze with prescription lenses, and optical shops in Bangladesh stock them. A metal spectacle frame manufacturer in Bangladesh is judged on size accuracy, hinge life and a finish that neither corrodes nor releases nickel.

Roptan takes your brief once and sources from verified makers. We put quotes on one basis of metal, finish, hinges and tests, ask for reports to current editions, measure samples and inspect the packed bulk. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of metal spectacle frame

Full-rim metal frames

The metal front surrounds each lens completely. Choose it for a general prescription range, and ask for the bridge deformation and lens retention tests, which show the rim holds its shape and the lens.

Half-rim metal frames

Also called semi-rimless: metal encloses only part of each lens and a thin wire, usually nylon, holds the rest. Choose it for a lighter, more open look, and state the wire type.

Rimless metal frames

There is no rim: the lenses are mounted directly to the bridge and temples, usually with screws. Choose it for the lightest look, and ask for the screw thread and endurance tests on the sample.

Titanium frames

Titanium alloys make strong, light frames, and some memory-metal alloys return to shape after bending. Choose them where weight and flexibility matter; they usually cost more than stainless steel.

How to specify a metal spectacle frame

Size on the boxing system
Lens width, bridge and temple length in millimetres, measured to ISO 8624, with your tolerances, for each size in the range.
Base metal
Stainless steel, titanium alloy or nickel-copper alloy, named part by part, since rims, bridge and temples can differ.
Finish and colours
Plating or coating type and every colour you will sell. The nickel test runs on the finished frame, so each finish needs its own result.
Hinges
Standard or spring hinges, and the screw type. Spring hinges have a mechanical test of their own, so decide before sampling.
Climate and storage
Humid air and long storage are usually hard on thin plating. Ask for corrosion, perspiration and salt-spray results for frames stored near the coast.

Standards and rules for metal frames

ISO 12870:2024 (EN ISO 12870:2025)
The current frame standard: requirements and test methods for unglazed frames for prescription lenses. It replaced the 2016 edition, so ask for reports to the new text.
REACH nickel limit and EN 16128
Skin-contact parts may release at most 0.5 µg/cm² of nickel a week, and a coating must hold that for at least two years of normal use. EN 16128:2025 is the frame test method.
EU medical device rules
Spectacle frames are class I medical devices under Regulation (EU) 2017/745. A brand selling them under its own name usually takes on the manufacturer's duties under Article 16.
US FDA, 21 CFR 886.5842
In the US a spectacle frame of metal or plastic for prescription lenses is a Class I device, exempt from premarket notification.

What moves the price of a metal spectacle frame

  • Base metal: titanium alloys usually cost more than stainless steel or nickel-copper wire in the same shape.
  • Hinges: spring hinges add parts, assembly and a mechanical test that a standard hinge does not need.
  • Finishes: every plated colour needs its own sample, approval and nickel-release report.
  • Design: a new shape needs drawings and samples approved before bulk; an existing model does not.

Lead times and delivery

We give no figure here, because time depends on the order. It grows with a new shape instead of an existing model, with each plated colour to sample and test, and with frame and nickel reports from a lab. Roptan confirms the dates, and the minimum per model and colour, in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver to optical shops, eye hospitals, distributors and chains, packed by model, size and colour. Each delivery carries the packing list, the reports for the finishes supplied and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3), in cartons kept dry.

Buying metal spectacle frames for export

For buyers abroad we ship by air from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, or FOB Chattogram for larger loads. Complete metal frames usually go under HS 9003 19 and loose parts under 9003 90. Papers include the certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS, and the lab reports. The EU and UK want the importer's name and address on the product, its packaging or a document that travels with it.

What we check for this order

  • Current standard editionsWe check that frame reports cite ISO 12870:2024 or EN ISO 12870:2025, not the withdrawn 2016 or 2018 text on old lab templates.
  • Nickel result per finishWe match each plated colour to its own EN 16128 nickel report, tested on the finished frame.
  • Size markingWe measure lens width, bridge and temple length on samples against the marking and your tolerances.
  • Hinges, screws and platingOn the packed bulk we work the hinges, check screws and look for pitting or peeling, sampling under ISO 2859-1.

Questions buyers ask

Is titanium worth it over stainless steel?

It depends on the line. Titanium alloys make strong, light frames and usually cost more; stainless steel suits most everyday ranges. Ask for the same frame tests on either metal, so you compare like with like.

Which edition of ISO 12870 should a frame report show?

ISO 12870:2024, or EN ISO 12870:2025 for the EU. The 2016 edition was withdrawn in November 2024 and the EN 2018 text in September 2025, yet old lab templates still show them. A report to a withdrawn edition is a reason to ask for a retest.

Does a coated frame still need a nickel test?

Yes, for the EU. REACH asks that a coating keeps nickel release under the limit for at least two years of normal use, so the test runs on the coated frame. A dimethylglyoxime wipe can screen a sample, but only a lab test to EN 16128 counts.

Who is the manufacturer if I sell the frames under my brand?

In the EU, usually you. Under Article 16 of the medical device regulation, a company selling a device under its own name takes on the manufacturer's duties, unless an agreement names the maker on the label. Frames produced from 1 November 2028 also need a Master UDI-DI.

How soon will I hear back about eyewear and optical?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
