Buying lollipops in Bangladesh

A lollipop is a sugar candy, usually hard candy, set on a stick for sucking or licking. Sizes run from small pops sold in bulk to large twisted spirals. In Bangladesh, distributors and shops buy them by the jar and the bag, brands order them under their own label, and importers buy them for resale.

A lollipop is two products, the candy and the stick, and no standard we found covers the stick. A lollipop manufacturer in Bangladesh therefore has to agree it in writing. Roptan sources from verified plants, writes candy, stick, wrap and tests into the order, and checks a sample and the bulk.

Kinds of lollipop

Plain boiled lollipops

Clear or coloured hard candy in one flavour, usually round or flat. Choose them for fruit ranges, counter jars and promotions where cost per piece matters.

Spiral lollipops

Several coloured candy ropes twisted into a flat spiral, often large. Choose them for gifts and display, and approve all the colours together on one sample.

Filled lollipops

A hard candy shell around a centre of bubble gum or soft candy. Choose them for a second texture; the filling is a second recipe, so list its ingredients and allergens too.

Novelty lollipops

Pops with a non-edible part, such as a light in the centre or a motorised stick. Choose them for gifts, knowing the toy part needs its own checks.

How to brief a lollipop manufacturer in Bangladesh

Candy recipe
Sugar to glucose syrup ratio, acid, flavours and colours. Glucose syrup holds back crystals as the candy cools; a lollipop that crystallises goes cloudy and grainy.
Moisture
Cooked lollipop candy is usually around 1 to 2 percent moisture, against 8 to 12 percent in crystalline candies. Ask the plant to state its target and test it.
Stick
Paper, plastic or another material, with diameter, length and how deep it sits in the candy. Agree the pull-out test the plant will run, since no standard sets one.
Size and count
Candy weight and diameter, length with stick, pieces per bag, jar or display box, and packs per carton.
Wrap
Twist or flow wrap in food-grade film, printed on the outside so ink does not touch the candy, with a seal tight enough for humid months.
Label
Full label particulars go on the bag or jar, since a single pop is too small to carry them.

Standards and papers for lollipops

BDS 490 (BSTI)
BSTI's lozenge standard, which the draft revision widens to hard candy, is the nearest one. The draft text does not mention sticks or lollipops, so the stick sits outside it and goes into your order.
Halal, hygiene and food-contact film
The draft revision of BDS 490 asks for halal, food-grade ingredients, premises kept to BDS 822 and ink kept off the candy. Ask for the film's food-contact declaration.
Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008
EU additive rules: six colours, among them tartrazine (E 102) and allura red (E 129), need a warning about activity and attention in children. Colourful pops are the usual case.
Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011
EU label rules, with a minimum letter height of 0.9 mm on packs under 80 square cm of largest surface. Check wrapper artwork before printing.

What moves the price of a lollipop

  • Sugar and glucose syrup: the bulk of the candy, and import duties on sugar pass into the cost.
  • Piece weight and shape: a large spiral uses more candy and more steps than a small round pop.
  • Stick: paper and plastic sticks differ in cost, and a longer or thicker stick costs more.
  • Filling and colours: a gum or soft centre adds a second recipe; several colours mean several batches.
  • Wrap and display: printed film, jars and display boxes add cost per piece.

Lead times and delivery

Lead time is usually shorter for plain pops in the plant's own wrap, and longer for private label, spirals and filled pops, where colours for your market, a new stick, printed film and lab tests come before bulk. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver by the carton, bag or display jar, with batch codes, the lab report where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). If pops arrive sticky, cloudy or with loose sticks, we take it up with the seller.

Buying lollipops for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong); lollipops ship under HS 170490 with other sugar confectionery. For the EU, leave out titanium dioxide (E 171), which is no longer permitted, and check the six warning colours. For the United States, a red pop needs a red other than erythrosine, whose ban is enforced from 15 January 2027.

What we check for this order

  • Stick pull-outWe check that sticks on a sample hold under the pull-out test agreed in the order.
  • Humid storage sampleWe check a wrapped sample after humid storage for stickiness, cloudiness and grain, and that the wrap still seals.
  • Colours against your marketWe check every colour on the recipe sheet by E or INS number against your market's list before film is printed.
  • Lot report and countWe check the lab report against agreed limits, and piece weight, stick length and pack count, before loading.

Questions buyers ask

Are plastic lollipop sticks allowed?

Rules differ by market and change over time, so check yours before you choose. The EU single-use plastics directive restricts items such as cotton bud sticks, balloon sticks, straws and stirrers; it does not list candy sticks. If your retailer prefers paper, specify paper and approve a sample.

Why do lollipops go cloudy or grainy?

The candy has started to crystallise or has taken up water. Glucose syrup holds back crystals as the candy cools, and a sealed wrap keeps damp air out. Ask for the recipe ratio and a humid storage result.

Which Bangladesh standard applies to lollipops?

None names lollipops. The nearest is BDS 490, BSTI's standard for hard candy and lozenges; the 2014 edition is titled Lozenges, and a draft revision titled Hard candy is not confirmed as adopted. Neither covers the stick. Ask which edition the plant's BSTI licence and test report use.

Can you supply lollipops with a light or a toy?

Yes, through a plant that makes them, but treat each as a toy and a sweet. The candy follows food rules; the light, battery or moving part needs checks under your market's toy rules. Send those rules with the order.

How soon will I hear back about confectionery and chocolate?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
