Buying hard candy in Bangladesh

Hard candy is sugar and glucose syrup boiled until almost no water is left, usually at about 160 °C, then flavoured, coloured, formed and cooled into a clear, brittle glass. Distributors, shops and brands in Bangladesh buy it loose, in jars and under their own label; importers buy it for resale.

Glassy sugar takes up water from humid air, so a hard candy manufacturer in Bangladesh has to plan the wrap as carefully as the recipe. Roptan sources from verified plants, writes the recipe, wrap and tests into the order, checks a sample after humid storage and inspects the bulk.

Kinds of hard candy

Boiled hard candy

Sugar or sweeteners and their syrups boiled to a high temperature, then cooled into a hard, clear glass. Choose it for fruit drops, clear mints and wrapped sweets sold loose or in jars.

Lozenges

A solid piece meant to dissolve slowly, usually cold mixed with no boiling, then cut from a dough sheet and air-dried, or compressed. Choose it for pressed mints and slow-dissolving sweets.

Centre-filled candy

A boiled shell around a liquid, semi-solid or solid centre. Choose it when you want a soft or powder burst. The draft Bangladesh standard allows it more moisture, so wrap it tightly.

Sugar-free hard candy

Usually made with isomalt in place of sugar, often with an intense sweetener or a sugar alcohol such as xylitol added. Choose it for sugar-free ranges.

How to brief a hard candy manufacturer in Bangladesh

Kind and recipe
Boiled, lozenge, filled or sugar-free, with the sweeteners, acid, flavours and colours named. Agree one signed reference sample for the bulk check.
Piece weight and count
Grams per piece with a tolerance, shape and size, count per bag or jar, and single wraps or loose packing.
Colours by number
Each colour by E or INS number. The draft BSTI text refers additives to the Codex General Standard for Food Additives (CXS 192).
Wrap and print
Waxed paper, foil, cellulose or plastic film, plain or printed, with the ink kept off the candy.
Storage conditions
The months and conditions the pack must survive, with a humid storage test result rather than a promise. Damp candy turns sticky and fuses to its wrap.
Label panel
Name, maker, batch, net mass, ingredients, allergens, dates and maximum retail price, on the bag, jar or carton, since a single sweet is too small.

Standards, tests and papers for hard candy

BDS 490 (BSTI)
BSTI's standard for this group. The 2014 edition on the mandatory certification list is titled Lozenges; a fourth revision titled Hard candy was circulated as a draft in 2026, adoption not confirmed.
Halal and BDS 822 hygiene
The draft asks for halal, food-grade ingredients and premises kept to BDS 822, the hygiene code for food plants. Ask for both papers.
Batch lab report
Moisture, ash, total sugar, sulphur dioxide, Salmonella, and arsenic, lead, cadmium and tin, the list in the draft revision, sampled as Annex H of BDS 1000 sets out.
EU colour and label rules
Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 requires a warning for six colours, among them tartrazine (E 102); labels follow Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011.

What moves the price of hard candy

  • Sugar and glucose syrup: they make up nearly all of the piece, and import duties on sugar pass into the cost.
  • Filling, coating or a sugar-free recipe: each adds an ingredient or a process step to the plain boiled drop.
  • Piece weight and count: every piece needs its own wrap, so small pieces add wrapping per kilogram.
  • Wrap and print: waxed paper, foil or printed film, the number of print colours, and jars or display boxes.

Lead times and delivery

Lead time is usually shorter for a standard candy in the plant's own wrap, and longer for private label, where a new recipe, colour changes for export, printed film and lab tests each come before bulk. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver by the carton or jar, with batch codes, the lab report where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). In the monsoon months, store cartons sealed and dry. If candy arrives sticky or fused to its wrap, we take it up with the seller.

Buying hard candy for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram (Chittagong); hard candy ships under HS 170490. For the EU, check the six warning colours and leave out titanium dioxide (E 171), which is no longer permitted; sulphites above 10 mg/kg must be declared. For the United States, red candy needs a red other than erythrosine, banned with enforcement from 15 January 2027.

What we check for this order

  • Edition and licenceWe check which BDS 490 edition the plant's BSTI licence and test report name, and that the licence covers this candy.
  • Colours against your marketWe check every colour on the recipe sheet by number against your market's list before printing.
  • Humid storage sampleWe check a wrapped sample stored in humid conditions for stickiness, cloudiness and wraps fusing to the candy.
  • Batch report before loadingWe check the lab report for moisture, sulphur dioxide, Salmonella and metals against the agreed limits before loading.

Questions buyers ask

Which Bangladesh standard covers hard candy?

BDS 490 from BSTI. The edition on BSTI's mandatory certification list is the 2014 one, titled Lozenges. A fourth revision renamed Hard candy, adding Salmonella and cadmium limits, was circulated as a draft in 2026 and is not confirmed as adopted. Ask which edition the plant's licence and test report use.

How should hard candy be packed for the monsoon?

Wrap each piece singly, then pack it in a reasonably air-tight container of tin, glass, plastic or moisture-proof paper, as the draft BSTI text lists. Keep outer cartons sealed until use. Before bulk, we check a sample stored in humid air for stickiness.

Can you supply sugar-free hard candy?

Yes. It usually replaces sugar with isomalt, often with an intense sweetener or a sugar alcohol such as xylitol. The draft BSTI text asks for sugar-free wording near the name and, where aspartame is used, a phenylketonuria warning. We check the wording before film is printed.

Can red hard candy be sold in the United States?

Yes, if the red is permitted there. The FDA banned erythrosine (Red No. 3) in all foods in January 2025, with enforcement from 15 January 2027. Ask the plant to name every colour by number and change the recipe if erythrosine is on it.

How soon will I hear back about confectionery and chocolate?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
