Buying LED lights in Bangladesh

Two things are sold as an LED light. A lamp is the capped light source that fits into a holder; a luminaire, or light fitting, is the fixture that holds the source. Bangladeshi makers assemble both, largely from imported parts. Contractors, developers, factories and dealers buy them in volume, and fittings also go abroad to buyers in the United States, Japan and the UK.

A fitting that looks fine on the sample table can fail in a hot ceiling void or a monsoon yard. Roptan sources each LED light manufacturer in Bangladesh from verified makers, checks the lab reports against your model, confirms the IP rating on paper and delivers.

Kinds of LED light

LED bulbs

Capped lamps with the driver built in. Local listings show B22 bayonet pin caps; E27 is the screw cap for Edison holders. Choose them to replace lamps in holders already installed.

LED tubes

Made as drop-in replacements for fluorescent tubes in G13 bi-pin holders. Choose them for retrofits, after checking the fitting's wiring.

Recessed downlights and troffers

Housed behind the ceiling with only the face showing, for offices, shops and flats. The housing must keep flammable material away from the hot fitting.

LED strip lights

Flexible strips of LEDs, usually with an adhesive back, for coves, shelves, signs and cabinets.

Low-bay and high-bay lights

Low-bay fittings suit ceilings of about 3.5 to 6 m and high-bay about 6 to 14 m, for factories, warehouses and halls.

Floodlights and ground-recessed lights

Outdoor fittings for facades, yards, car parks and footways, sealed against dust and water.

How to specify an LED lamp or luminaire

Lamp or fitting
Say whether you want a replaceable capped lamp or a complete luminaire. They fall under different customs headings and safety standards.
Cap and holder
Name the cap, B22 bayonet or E27 screw, to match the holders on site.
Colour temperature
Give kelvins, not words: about 2700 K soft white, 3000 K warm white, 5000 K cool white and 6500 K daylight. Local bulbs are often sold at the daylight end.
Lumens and watts
Ask for measured lumens and watts on the exact model. Published efficacy for 230 V screw lamps of 5 to 16 W runs from 75 to 217 lm/W, so a claim alone says little.
Flicker
A poor built-in power supply can make a lamp flicker, which has been linked to headache and migraine. Ask for a measured figure, not just 'flicker-free'.
IP rating
Under IEC 60529 the first digit rates dust (6 is dust-tight) and the second water (5 jets, 6 powerful jets). Ask for the lab report behind it.
Shock class
Class I fittings need an earth conductor; Class II fittings are double insulated and need none. State which.

Standards and test reports for LED lights

IEC 60598-1 and its part 2s
Luminaire safety. Part 1, in its 2024 edition, is read with a part 2 for the fitting, such as 2-2 recessed luminaires or 2-5 floodlights.
IEC 62560
Safety of self-ballasted LED lamps above 50 V up to 250 V, rated up to 60 W. It is the safety report for a capped bulb.
IEC 62722-2-1
Performance of LED luminaires, current in its 2023 edition: the fitting's counterpart to a lamp performance report.
IEC 62471
Photobiological safety of lamps and lamp systems, LEDs included, with a risk classification.
BSTI mandatory list
Self-ballasted LED lamps are listed under BDS IEC 62612:2015, a performance standard. No luminaire or LED lamp safety standard is listed, so those reports are buyer requirements.

What moves the price of an LED lamp or luminaire

  • Driver: surge protection and power factor features add parts to every unit.
  • Housing and heat sink: more and better metal for fittings that run hot or sealed.
  • Optics and diffuser: lenses and diffusers cost more than a plain cover.
  • Sealing: a higher IP rating needs gaskets, sealed glands and tested housings.
  • Lab reports: performance, safety, photobiological and EMC reports per model.

Lead times and delivery

Lamps and fittings already in a maker's range usually ship sooner than private label or a new housing, which needs an approved sample and often a new lab report first. We found no reliable figure in weeks for lamps or luminaires, and no reliable minimum, so none is stated here. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per model in the quote.

Roptan delivers lamps and fittings anywhere in Bangladesh, counted by model, wattage and colour temperature. The seller or your electrical contractor installs fittings, as the quote says. You receive the agreed lab reports, a copy of the BSTI licence for bulbs, warranty terms and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying LED lights for export

Light fittings fall under HS heading 9405, which has a line for fittings designed only for LED sources; your broker confirms it. For the EU, ask for EMC reports to EN IEC 55015 and EN IEC 61547 beside the safety reports. Quotes are FOB Chattogram.

What we check for this order

  • Report matches the productWe check each lab report names the exact model, cap, wattage and voltage in your order.
  • Current editionsWe check luminaire reports cite IEC 60598-1:2024 and IEC 62722-2-1:2023, not withdrawn editions.
  • IP rating on paperWe ask for the lab report behind the IP rating on outdoor and wet-area fittings.
  • Heat in the ceilingFor recessed fittings we check the ambient rating of the fitting and driver against the ceiling void.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between an LED lamp and a luminaire?

A lamp has a cap so it can be fitted or replaced in a holder; a luminaire is the fitting that holds the light source. They are tested to different standards, IEC 62560 for a self-ballasted lamp and IEC 60598 for a luminaire.

Should I order B22 or E27 bulbs?

Order the cap your holders take. Local listings show B22, a bayonet pin cap common in many former British territories; E27 is a 27 mm Edison screw for screw holders. Count holders by type before ordering, since a bulb with the wrong cap will not fit.

What IP rating does an outdoor fitting need?

It depends on where it sits. The first digit covers dust and the second water; 5 resists jets and 6 powerful jets, and IPX7 does not imply IPX5. Large areas flood in the monsoon, so ask that ground-recessed fittings are tested to IEC 60598-2-13, the part written for them.

Do LED fittings need BSTI certification?

Not on BSTI's mandatory list as we read it. The list names self-ballasted LED lamps under a performance standard, not luminaires. For fittings, the safety and performance reports are what your contract asks for.

How soon will I hear back about home appliances?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
