Buying irons and kettles in Bangladesh

Irons and kettles are small heating appliances sold in large numbers through dealers, shops and online stores in Bangladesh. Irons run from plain dry models to steam irons and steam stations. Most local kettles hold 1.0 to 2.3 litres. Local makers of small kitchen appliances make kettles too, and some sell to nearby markets.

Kettles and irons sit differently on BSTI's mandatory list, and the report behind a sample can cite an edition that has been withdrawn. Roptan sources each iron and kettle manufacturer in Bangladesh from verified makers, checks the licence and report editions against your model, tests the switch-off on samples and delivers.

Kinds of iron and kettle

Dry irons

A heated sole plate held at the set temperature by a thermostat, with no water tank. Choose them for simple daily use and hard-water areas.

Steam irons

A tank feeds steam through the sole plate; some add a spray or vertical steam. Local listings run up to about 2200 W. Compact portable models carry tanks of about 130 to 180 ml.

Steam stations

An iron joined to a separate steam tank or boiler. It gives more steam and faster ironing than a steam iron, but warms up more slowly and costs more.

Cordless irons

Not battery powered: the iron heats on its stand and works on stored heat for a short time, for light loads only.

Electric kettles

An enclosed element, switch-off at the boil and usually boil-dry protection. Many local models pair a 304 stainless steel liner with a plastic outer body.

How to specify an iron or kettle

Sole plate and temperature
Name the sole plate metal, aluminium or stainless steel, and any coating. Domestic irons usually run at about 121 to 182 °C under a thermostat.
Iron power, steam and features
State watts at 220 V, tank size in ml and steam rate in g/min, plus each feature you want: flat shut-off, anti-scale, vertical steam, self-clean.
Kettle capacity and power
Give litres and watts at 220 V. Local kettles are mostly 1000 to 1500 W; a rating made for another market's mains will mislead.
Kettle body and controls
Ask for the liner grade, such as 304 stainless steel, the outer body, the base, switch-off at the boil and boil-dry protection.
Voltage, plug and current
Mains is 220 V at 50 Hz, and a 1500 W kettle draws about 6.8 A at that voltage. Socket types vary, so name the plug and say Class I (earthed) or Class II (double insulated).
Heat and damp
Summers reach 38 to 41 °C with high humidity. Ask for the rated ambient temperature and insulation test results on the exact model.

Standards, tests and the BSTI licence

IEC 60335-2-3 with IEC 60335-1
Safety of electric irons, read with the general appliance part. The current edition is from 2022, when the 2012 edition was withdrawn.
BDS IEC 60311:2018
BSTI lists irons only by this method for measuring performance, which sets no pass marks. No iron safety standard is on the mandatory list.
IEC 60335-2-15
Safety of appliances for heating liquids, kettles up to 10 litres among them. The 2024 edition replaced the 2012 one on 1 November 2024.
BDS 253:1990 and the BSTI licence
Domestic electric kettles are on BSTI's mandatory certification list under this standard, so a kettle sold in Bangladesh needs the licence and mark.

What moves the price of an iron or kettle

  • Kettle body: a 304 stainless liner and a double-layer anti-scald shell cost more than plain plastic.
  • Kettle fittings: a full copper cord, a 360 degree base and extra boil modes each add cost.
  • Iron sole plate and care: a coating, anti-calc and self-clean move a steam iron up the range.
  • Steam power: higher watts or a separate steam tank raise the cost of the iron.
  • Licence and reports: the BSTI kettle licence and IEC reports, spread over the order.

Lead times and delivery

An iron or kettle already in a maker's range usually ships sooner than a private label model, which waits on sample approval first, and a new mould or a kettle licence adds more time. We found no reliable figure in weeks for these products, nor a reliable minimum, so we give none here. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per model in the quote.

Roptan delivers irons and kettles to dealers, shops, hotels and offices anywhere in Bangladesh, counted by model and colour. You receive a copy of the seller's BSTI licence for kettles, the agreed test reports, warranty cards and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying irons and kettles for export

Irons enter under HS heading 8516.40, electric smoothing irons; Bangladesh's iron exports are small, with Nepal the largest single market. The export data names no line for kettles, so your customs broker confirms it. Quotes are FOB Chattogram, built for your market's voltage and plug.

What we check for this order

  • BSTI licence for kettlesWe check that the seller's BSTI licence for electric kettles is current and in the name on the quote.
  • Current report editionsWe check each report names the exact model and a current edition, not IEC 60335-2-3:2012 or IEC 60335-2-15:2012.
  • Switch-off on a sampleOn a sample kettle we check switch-off at the boil and boil-dry protection; on an iron, the flat shut-off if ordered.
  • Rating label and plugWe match the watts, 220 V 50 Hz and the plug on the rating label to your order.

Questions buyers ask

Do irons need BSTI certification in Bangladesh?

Irons appear on BSTI's mandatory list, but only under the performance method BDS IEC 60311:2018; no iron safety standard is listed. Kettles are listed under BDS 253:1990. For an iron we check the BSTI licence and still ask for an IEC 60335-2-3 safety report.

Is a cordless iron battery powered?

No. A battery cannot supply the power an iron needs. A cordless iron heats on its stand and irons on stored heat for a short time, so it suits light ironing, not a full basket. Say so on the box.

What capacity should a kettle have?

Usually 1.8 litres for a home in Bangladesh, within a local range of 1.0 to 2.3 litres. Higher watts boil faster but draw more current. Set capacity and watts at 220 V in the order.

Do irons or kettles carry an energy label in Bangladesh?

Not on the source we found. The voluntary star-rating phase of SREDA's 2018 regulation names ceiling fans, LED lamps, room air conditioners and refrigerators, not irons or kettles.

How soon will I hear back about home appliances?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
