Buying laminated hessian in Bangladesh

Laminated hessian is plain jute cloth with a plastic film, or a layer of bitumen and film or of paper, bonded to it. A 2025 food-science review calls jute a poor barrier to oxygen and water vapour, which is why buyers laminate it for damp-sensitive goods and covers, while paper laminates are sold for wrapping boxes.

The standards found cover laminated jute bags rather than the cloth, so the order usually is the specification. Roptan writes base cloth, polymer, sides, retained strength and test methods into it before any laminated hessian manufacturer in Bangladesh quotes, then checks them on rolls from your lot.

Kinds of laminated hessian

Film laminated, one side

Polyethylene film bonded to one face of the hessian, leaving the other face plain jute. Choose it for bags, covers and wraps where one barrier layer is enough.

Film laminated, both sides

Film on both faces, for when both must resist damp. A broker may class cloth fully coated on both sides outside the textile chapters, so check the code first.

Bitumen and poly laminated

Hessian coated with bitumen and laminated with a polyethylene layer, which sellers list as a moisture barrier for covers and for packing heavy goods. Choose it where damp resistance matters more than looks.

Paper laminated

Hessian bonded to paper, which sellers list for wrapping corrugated boxes and heavy packing, at times with bitumen and plastic in the laminate. State the paper as well as the weight and construction of the base cloth.

Hessian with a loose liner

Not a laminate: a separate plastic liner inside a hessian bag. India's sugar bag standard uses one to keep oil and moisture off the contents.

How to brief a laminated hessian manufacturer in Bangladesh

Base cloth
Weight in g/m² or oz per 40-inch yard, and construction in porters by shots or ends and picks per dm. India's hessian standard equates 9 by 8 with 38 by 31 per dm.
Film or layer
Polymer, thickness in microns or coating weight in g/m², and one side or both, each with your own limit.
Bonded, loose or both
Whether the film is laminated to the cloth, supplied as a loose liner, or both, since these are different products.
Strength after lamination
Breaking load of the laminated cloth as a share of the base cloth. As a guide, India's canvas standard wants proofed canvas to reach 90 percent of the strength set for unproofed canvas.
Adhesion and water
How well the film stays on, and how much water the cloth keeps out, each on a stated test method agreed with the mill before bulk.
Seams
For sewn bags, seam strength, which India tests on jute fabrics and their laminates under IS 9030:2024.

Tests and rules for laminated hessian

IS 9030:2024
India's method for seam strength of jute fabrics including their laminates. A neighbouring country's method: ask whether your lab runs it or a stated equivalent.
Laminated jute bag standards
IJSG's list of national standards names Bangladesh and Indian documents for laminated jute bags for fertiliser. Ask BSTI whether the Bangladesh one is current before citing it.
Mandatory Use of Jute Packaging Act 2010
It defines jute packaging as at least 75 percent jute. Before laminated bags carry goods notified under it, confirm with the Department of Jute that they qualify.

What moves the price of laminated hessian

  • The base hessian: weight, construction, width and the raw jute price.
  • The film: polymer, thickness or coating weight, and one side or both.
  • Bitumen, paper or fire-retardant treatment, each an added material and process.
  • The reports asked for: adhesion, water resistance, seam strength and retained strength.
  • Packing in wrapped rolls on cores rather than in pressed bales.

Lead times and delivery

Laminating hessian already woven to a running quality is usually quicker than weaving a special base cloth first. Sourcing a particular film, a trial lamination for your approval and the adhesion and water tests each add time. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, we deliver rolls on cores, wrapped and kept flat, by covered truck to your bag unit, packing line or store, with a roll list, the lot test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Creased rolls or film lifting from the cloth are Roptan's to take up with the mill.

Buying laminated hessian for export

Lamination changes the customs line. Plain hessian leaves Bangladesh under HS 5310, while HS 5903 is the customs heading for textile fabrics laminated with plastics; bitumen or paper laminates and made-up bags may sit elsewhere, so your broker confirms the line. We quote FOB Chattogram or Mongla with packing list, certificate of origin and the lot reports.

What we check for this order

  • Base cloth before laminationWeight and construction of the hessian measured before the film goes on, since the film adds mass.
  • Film cover and bondFilm bonded edge to edge without loose patches on sampled rolls, and the adhesion result on the agreed method.
  • Strength keptBreaking load of the laminated cloth against the share of base-cloth strength agreed in the order.
  • Rolls kept flatRolls wound on cores and wrapped, not pressed into bales, so the film is not creased in transit.

Questions buyers ask

Does laminated hessian count as jute packaging?

That is for the Department of Jute to say. The Mandatory Use of Jute Packaging Act 2010 requires packaging of at least 75 percent jute for notified goods such as rice, sugar and fertiliser, and a film adds plastic. Confirm before using laminated bags for those goods.

Should I order laminated cloth or a loose liner?

Laminated cloth carries the film bonded to the jute; a liner is a separate bag inside. India's sugar bag standard pairs a hessian bag with a loose liner to keep oil and moisture off the sugar. You can also ask for both; say which in the order.

Why laminate jute at all?

Jute lets water vapour and oxygen through. The 2025 review found jute bags stored wheat, maize, chilli and tea seeds better when combined with inner polyethylene layers, and Bangladesh's feed millers argued in 2018 that feed in jute sacks needs a polyethylene layer against damp.

How is the bond between film and cloth tested?

By a coating adhesion method agreed with the mill before bulk, with a pass level written into the order and the test run on cloth from your lot. Ask for the breaking load of the laminated cloth in the same report.

How soon will I hear back about hessian and jute fabric?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
