Buying jute canvas in Bangladesh

Jute canvas is a dense plain weave with a double warp, denser than single-warp hessian. India's standard IS 10036 sets it at 407 g/m² or more, with over 118 ends per dm. It goes into tarpaulins, covers, tents, mail bags and cover cloth for temporary structures, in Bangladesh and abroad.

Some sellers also call tight craft hessian 'canvas'. So Roptan asks each jute canvas manufacturer in Bangladesh to quote weight, ends and picks, warp type and finish, compares offers on those figures, and checks strength after proofing on cloth from your lot before delivery or shipment.

Kinds of jute canvas

Fine jute canvas

India's fine grade, IS 10036 Part II: 660 g/m² at about 134 ends and 70 picks per dm. Quote against it when you want a dense cloth with a known construction.

Calendered canvas

Calendered on one side or both, as the order states, for a flatter, closer face. Ask for a sample of the calendered face before the bulk order is finished.

Waterproofed canvas

Proofed for tarpaulins and covers. India's IS 10036 limits proofing to half the mass of the unproofed cloth and tests water repellency by a cone test, IS 7941.

Rotproofed canvas

Treated against rot for cloth that stays damp or outdoors. Ask which agent is used, and check it against your market's chemical rules before you order.

Flame-retardant canvas

For cover cloth on temporary structures, which India covers in IS 17291:2019. Treatment can reduce strength significantly, so test the treated cloth, not the grey.

How to brief a jute canvas manufacturer in Bangladesh

Weight and construction
g/m² with a tolerance, double warp, and ends and picks per dm. India's IS 10036 fine canvas allows plus or minus 35 g/m² and plus or minus 4 ends and picks.
Breaking load
Warpway and weftway minimums on a 10 by 20 cm ravelled strip. The same fine canvas asks for at least 270 kgf warpway and 250 kgf weftway.
Yarn
Canvas is usually woven from medium coarse yarn of 7 to 12 lb per spyndle. India's IS 10036 leaves counts to the mill, so ask which it uses.
Regain and oil
India's IS 10036 sets a 14 percent contract regain, below the Indian hessian and sacking figures, and an oil limit cut from 6 to 3 percent in 2005.
Finish
Calendered one side or both, waterproofed, rotproofed or flame-retardant, and whether the warp is treated against fungus during starching, as India's IS 10036 prefers.
Cut lengths
India's IS 10036 calls 82 m or more a full cut, 37 to under 82 m a medium cut and 18 to under 37 m a short piece. Say how many a bale may hold.

Standards and tests for jute canvas

IS 10036 (Parts I and II):1982
India's jute canvas specification, reaffirmed, with one amendment of 2005. A neighbouring country's text, useful for construction, strength, regain, oil, cut lengths and faults; cite it or your own figures.
Bangladesh canvas standard
IJSG's list of national standards, from about 2005, shows a Bangladesh document for fine jute canvas, number unconfirmed. Ask BSTI for the current text before citing one.
ISO 14184-1
Free formaldehyde test used in research on flame-retardant jute. Ask for it, with a stated fire test, if treated canvas goes to a market that limits formaldehyde.

What moves the price of jute canvas

  • Mass and the double warp, which put more yarn into every metre than hessian.
  • Finish: calendering, waterproofing, rotproofing or flame retardance, and the strength test after each.
  • The contract regain at which the order is weighed and invoiced.
  • Width, cut lengths and packing in loose lapped cuts, bales or rolls.
  • The raw jute price, which rose after a fall in production and led to export curbs in September 2025.

Lead times and delivery

Grey canvas in a construction the mill already weaves usually ships sooner than a new construction or a finished cloth. Proofing, flame-retardant treatment and the strength, water and fire tests that follow each add time, as does a sample for your approval. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, canvas can come in loose lapped cuts tied with twine near the selvedges, in bales, or in rolls on cores. We deliver by covered truck, each piece marked with description, finish, length, contract mass and lot number, with the lot report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying jute canvas for export

Unbleached canvas ships under HS 5310.10 with other woven jute cloth. Primed painting canvas belongs to HS 5901, and a proofed cloth may move heading too, so your broker confirms the line. We quote FOB Chattogram or Mongla, with a REX statement for EU GSP.

What we check for this order

  • Double warp and settWarp type and ends and picks per dm checked on cloth from your lot, since single-warp cloth can be offered as canvas.
  • Strength after finishingRavelled strip breaking load measured on the finished cloth, after proofing or flame-retardant treatment, not on the grey.
  • Cuts and markingCut lengths, medium cuts and short pieces per bale against the order, and a lot number on every cut.
  • Stains and weave faultsSampled cuts free from wet stains, fungus and mildew, torn selvedges, floats and weft cracks.

Questions buyers ask

How is jute canvas different from heavy hessian?

By construction. Hessian is woven single warp and canvas double warp, which makes canvas denser; India's standard sets it at 407 g/m² or more. A heavy hessian can match canvas on weight alone, so ask for warp type and ends and picks, not only weight.

Can jute canvas be waterproofed?

It can be waterproofed to an agreed test. India's IS 10036 caps the proofing at half the cloth's mass and wants the proofed cloth to reach 90 percent of the strength set for unproofed canvas, because proofing adds weight and can cost strength. Write the water test and its pass level into the order.

Does untreated jute canvas burn?

Yes, readily. In a 2023 laboratory study, flame ran the full 15 cm length of untreated jute fabric in 21 seconds; flame-retardant treatment stopped the spread but significantly reduced strength. For covers and temporary structures, state the fire test and ask for strength after treatment.

Can I buy jute canvas for painting?

Artists have used hessian as an alternative to cotton or linen canvas. Prepared painting canvas is a separate customs heading, HS 5901, from plain woven jute. For art use, give the construction, the face you want and whether the cloth should come primed.

How soon will I hear back about hessian and jute fabric?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
