Buying kids' socks in Bangladesh
Kids' socks run from baby socks and booties sized by age to toddler grip socks, school socks and everyday packs sized by shoe size. The rules change with both the child's age and the market, and socks for babies up to 86 cm tall count as babies' garments in customs.
Small socks raise questions adult socks do not: loose threads inside, grips that lift, trims a child can pull off. Roptan briefs a verified kids' sock manufacturer in Bangladesh on sizes, fibre, grips and trims for your market, checks the sample inside out, and collects the reports before the bulk ships.
How to brief a kids' sock manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Size basis
- Say whether sizes run by age (months, then 2T to 4T) or by shoe size, and give the foot length or shoe range of each band; ranges differ by market.
- Inside finish
- Loose threads and inner fibre loops can wrap round a baby's toe. Require threads trimmed and each sock inspected inside out at finishing.
- Grips and prints
- Give dot size, layout and material, and agree the wash cycles the grip must survive. No standard sock grip test is in general use, so the protocol is yours.
- Trims
- List every attached piece with its fixing, and ask for a pull test on each and a check with the small-parts cylinder for its age group.
- Fibre names
- Yarn sold as bamboo is usually viscose: label it viscose or rayon from bamboo and print no antimicrobial claim. Test the blend before labels are printed.
Children's rules and tests for socks
- 15 U.S.C. 2063 and 16 CFR 1110 (US)
- Children's products under a safety rule need tests at an accredited third-party lab and a certificate before import, issued by the importer for socks made abroad, plus tracking marks on product and pack where practicable.
- 16 CFR 1500.91 (US lead)
- Textiles of natural or manufactured fibres are deemed within the lead limits, unless they carry a treatment or application that is not entirely dye. Grip dots and prints are such applications: test them.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/988
- The EU General Product Safety Regulation asks for a risk assessment that weighs children as vulnerable users, and a type or batch identifier on the sock or, if too small, the pack.
- OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100, class 1
- The class for babies and children up to 3 years, with tighter limits than other classes. Ask for it on the finished sock, grips and elastics included, and check the number on the Label Check.
Lead times and delivery
Lead times and minimums for kids' socks vary with the seller, the sizes and the market, so Roptan quotes both per order. US-bound orders need third-party testing and a certificate before import, which puts lab time ahead of shipment; new grip layouts, decorations and size bands add sampling and testing. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers kids' socks paired and packed by size band and design to your warehouse, shops or uniform supplier, with the packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). School packs can carry the size band on the front.
Buying kids' socks for export
Socks for babies up to 86 cm body height go under heading 6111, split by fibre, and older children's socks under heading 6115. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). For the US, the pack shows the country of origin beside the size, and the reports and certificate are ready before shipment.
Questions buyers ask
Are baby socks classed as socks in customs?
Not for babies. Articles for young children up to 86 cm body height go to heading 6111, babies' garments, split by fibre; socks for older children are hosiery, heading 6115. Tell your broker the size range, since the child's size decides.
Do plain cotton kids' socks need a US lead test?
Not for the dyed textile alone: textiles of natural or manufactured fibres with no treatment or application other than dyes are determined not to exceed the lead limits. Grip dots, prints and transfers fall outside that finding and need a test at an accredited third-party lab, with a certificate before import.
Who holds the certificate for private-label kids' socks?
For socks made outside the US, the CPSC certificate rule makes the importer the party that issues the certificate, based on tests at an accredited third-party lab. Agree in the order who imports, which lab tests the grip prints and other non-textile parts, and that the papers match the brand on the pack.
Can grip socks be sold as anti-slip?
Sell them as socks with grip dots, not as safety products. Evidence that non-slip socks prevent falls is inconclusive, so print no safety or anti-fall claim. Specify the grip material and layout, and test its adhesion after the agreed wash cycles.
How soon will I hear back about socks and hosiery?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
