Buying compression socks in Bangladesh

In a graduated compression sock the pressure peaks at the ankle and falls up the leg. Three products share the name: non-medical support and travel socks, sports compression socks, and medical compression stockings, which are regulated. Retailers and travel and sports brands buy the first two, at home and abroad.

The knit is only part of the job: the pressure profile, the size table and the pack wording decide what the product is in law. Roptan briefs a verified compression sock manufacturer in Bangladesh on support, travel and sports socks, and sources medical stockings only against the buyer's registration and specification.

Kinds of compression sock

Support socks

Mild compression socks, usually sold over the counter without a prescription, and with no medical purpose. Choose them for retail ranges sold on fit, size and fibre, with no health wording.

Travel socks

Non-medical support socks, often called flight socks. Choose them for travel and gift ranges, and keep the pack wording to fit, size, fibre and care.

Sports compression socks

Close-fitting socks worn for sport. The evidence on performance is mixed and in some settings shows no clear benefit, so sell them on fit and construction, not recovery or speed.

Medical compression stockings

Graduated stockings made to a stated ankle pressure for a medical purpose: regulated medical devices in the EU and the US. Roptan sources them only against the buyer's registration and specification.

How to brief a compression sock manufacturer in Bangladesh

Purpose and pack text
State the intended use and send the pack and listing text. In the EU and the US the stated purpose, not the knit, decides if a sock is a medical device.
Pressure profile
For graduated socks, give the pressure in mmHg at the ankle and at named points up the leg, the test method and the scheme, never a class number alone.
Sizing by the leg
Size by ankle and calf circumference in centimetres, not shoe size, with the pressure per size; makers measure differently, so print your method.
Length
Knee-high socks are easier to size and to put on than thigh-high stockings, which can roll down.
Elastic yarn
Name the elastic core, latex or elastane, and the yarn wrapped round it. One textile source says covered yarn rests at least two weeks before knitting.
Skin contact
Ask for chemical evidence on the finished sock, such as an OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 certificate, since fabric roughness and dyes can contribute to skin reactions.

Rules and tests for compression hosiery

Regulation (EU) 2017/745
The EU Medical Device Regulation defines a device by the purpose its maker intends. A sock sold for a medical purpose falls under it; without one, it stays a consumer product.
21 CFR 880.5780 (US)
Defines the medical support stocking, Class II or Class I by stated medical use, both exempt from premarket notification within limits. Pack wording sets the route.
RAL-GZ 387
A German scheme for medical compression hosiery. One testing institute stretches the sample to body circumference on a measuring device and asks for two samples per article and size.
No European standard
The European pre-standard for medical compression hosiery was cancelled and the old British standard withdrawn in 2018. Class tables still quoted from them are out of date: ask which scheme a seller's class follows.

What moves the price of a compression sock

  • Pressure testing: each size is tested, and one testing institute asks for two samples per article and size under RAL-GZ 387.
  • Sizes: one textile source says each size is knitted on a machine of its own diameter, so each added size is another set-up.
  • Elastic yarn: latex or elastane covered in cotton, wool or synthetic yarn, and usually rested before knitting.
  • Length and papers: thigh-high stockings take more yarn and are harder to size, and the medical side adds device documents.

Lead times and delivery

Lead times and minimums for compression socks vary with the seller, the yarn and the size range, so Roptan quotes both per order. Plans usually run longer than for ordinary socks: covered elastic yarn is rested before knitting, and every size is pressure-tested before bulk. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers compression socks packed per pair with the size table on each pack, plus the packing list, pressure and inspection reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For a hospital or clinic order with a medical purpose, Roptan checks the DGDA position first.

Buying compression socks for export

Graduated compression hosiery has its own subheading, 6115.10, with lines for synthetic fibres and other materials. A made-to-measure medical item may instead be read as an orthopaedic appliance, so your customs broker confirms the line for the product and its stated use. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) with pressure reports per size.

What we check for this order

  • Pressure report per sizeA lab report in mmHg at the ankle and named points, on a stated method, for every size ordered, before bulk.
  • Size table and labelsAnkle and calf ranges in centimetres on the size table and pack, with fibre content and any class tied to its scheme.
  • Pack and listing textFor non-medical socks, pack and listing text read for any medical claim before printing.
  • Medical documentsFor medical stockings, the buyer's device registration and technical documents on file before sourcing starts.

Questions buyers ask

Can you supply medical compression stockings?

Only against your own medical-device registration and specification. Send the pressure profile with its scheme and test method, the size table and your registration documents. Roptan sources against them, collects a pressure report for every size, and checks the DGDA position for any sale in Bangladesh.

What does class 1 or class 2 mean?

Nothing fixed: there is no single worldwide standard. For example, a 2019 UK review lists class 1 as 18 to 21 mmHg under the German RAL scheme but 10 to 15 mmHg under the French one. These show the gap, not a specification: order by the scheme, the pressure in mmHg and the method.

Can travel socks carry health claims on the pack?

Not medical ones. In the EU and the US, a medical claim on the pack or listing makes a sock a medical device, with registration and a technical file to match. Sell support and travel socks on fit, size and fibre, and send us the pack text first.

Why are compression socks sized by the leg?

Because the pressure depends on the leg the sock is stretched over. Ankle and calf circumference set the size, and some makers measure more points. Give a size table in centimetres with the pressure for each size, so buyers choose by measurement, not shoe size.

How soon will I hear back about socks and hosiery?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
