Buying crew socks in Bangladesh
A crew sock is the short everyday sock that ends between the ankle and the knee, usually at mid-calf with a ribbed top, and usually unisex. Athletic, dress, ribbed and patterned socks build on it. Importers buy them in multi-packs; companies and shops in Bangladesh buy them for staff wear and retail.
Crew socks are judged after a few washes: on fit, the toe seam and whether the top holds. Roptan briefs a verified crew sock manufacturer in Bangladesh on welt, heel, toe and blend, has the sample tried on a foot form, and checks weight, stretch and pairing.
How to brief a crew sock manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Leg height
- Crew names a length between the ankle and the knee, not a measurement. Give the height in centimetres per size, from a stated point such as the top of the heel.
- Welt and leg
- The welt is the starting edge that will not ravel. Name its type and whether a stretch yarn runs through the leg to hold the sock up.
- Heel and toe shape
- Ask for a formed heel pocket and a toe pocket. More courses under the toe than over it put the closing seam on top of the toes.
- Toe closing
- Linked, sewn or closed on the knitting machine. The methods leave different seams, so name one and judge the seam on the sample.
- Gauge
- Ask for needle count and cylinder diameter together. Gauge is usually stated as needles per inch of circumference, so one count on a larger cylinder knits a coarser sock.
Tests and labels for crew socks
- EN ISO 13938-2 (bursting)
- The pneumatic bursting test. Strength is rarely a sock's weak point, yet a cotton trade body says this test is always specified for socks.
- EN ISO 12945-2 (pilling)
- Modified Martindale pilling. Soft, low-twist yarns and blends with strong synthetic or wool fibres are the likely pillers; agree a grade with the lab.
- ISO 105-C06, E04 and X12
- Colour fastness to washing, perspiration and rubbing, dry and wet. Socks meet sweat and shoe friction all day, so test dark shades for all three.
- 16 CFR 303 and 423 (US labels)
- A hosiery pack may carry one fibre label for its socks. Socks in listed tariff lines show the origin on the pack front beside the size; care instructions are required.
Lead times and delivery
Lead times and minimums for crew socks vary with the seller, the yarn and the design, so Roptan quotes both per order. A repeat style in stock yarn shades is quicker to plan; a shade dyed to order, dyeing after knitting, a new pattern or an extra fit sample adds time. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers crew socks paired and packed by size and colour to your warehouse, shops or office, with the packing list, the inspection report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For uniform issue, ask for the size on each pack.
Buying crew socks for export
Crew socks enter under heading 6115 by main fibre: cotton, synthetic fibres, wool or fine animal hair, or other textile materials; your broker confirms the line. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) with test and inspection reports. For the EU, test the blend before packs are printed, since Regulation (EU) 1007/2011 requires the fibre composition.
Questions buyers ask
How high is a crew sock?
A crew sock ends between the ankle and the knee, usually at mid-calf, but the name is not a measurement. Give the leg height in centimetres for each size and approve it on a knitted sample, not in words.
Why do some crew socks shrink after washing?
Boarding presses socks on a heated form. For cotton it is pressing for packing and shape retention; on blends with nylon, polyester or elastane the heat can also set the shape, which reduces shrinkage. So the blend matters: have the sample measured after washing.
Can you copy a crew sock we already sell?
Yes. Send a few pairs. The seller measures and weighs them, a lab can confirm the blend by chemical analysis to the EN ISO 1833 series, and the copy is tried on a foot form beside your original before bulk.
Is a cotton crew sock exempt from US flammability testing?
Not automatically. 16 CFR 1610 keeps hosiery in scope, and its testing exemptions cover plain-surface fabric of 2.6 oz per square yard or more and fabric made entirely of listed fibres such as nylon, polyester or wool, not cotton or elastane. Ask the US buyer what it needs.
How soon will I hear back about socks and hosiery?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
