Buying jute rugs in Bangladesh

A jute rug is woven from jute, a bast fibre made mostly of cellulose and lignin, and Bangladesh grows more jute than any country except India. The rugs are firm, textured and made for dry rooms. Homes, hotels, offices and showrooms buy them here; importers abroad buy them by design and size.

Jute orders usually go wrong in three places: a shade jump between fibre lots, damp in the bale and loose weaving that sheds. Roptan matches you with a jute rug manufacturer in Bangladesh that weaves your construction, writes the lot, weight and moisture into the order, checks the sample and the bulk, then delivers.

Kinds of jute rug

Bouclé or loop-weave jute rugs

Jute yarn woven into rows of small loops for a textured face. Choose it for living rooms and bedrooms, and ask for a tight, even loop, since loose weaves shed and flatten.

Herringbone and chevron flatweaves

A flat, low weave whose pattern comes from the warp and weft. Its low profile usually fits under doors and furniture: choose it for living rooms and under tables, away from frequent spills.

Chunky hand-woven jute rugs

Heavy rugs woven from thick yarn. They usually trap more dirt and are harder to vacuum than a low flatweave, so keep them for decorative spots with light foot traffic.

Loop-pile rugs with a flat border

A loop-pile centre inside a flatwoven border, a build a customs ruling describes for jute. Choose it for pile texture with a flat, firm edge.

How to brief a jute rug manufacturer in Bangladesh

Construction
Name the weave, send a physical sample and state hand-woven or machine-made, so you and the maker mean the same build.
Fibre lot and shade
Natural jute varies in colour from bale to bale. Ask for each order to be woven from one lot, and approve dyed jute by lot as well.
Mass per square metre
State total mass in g/m², measured to ISO 8543, so the sample and the bulk are weighed the same way.
Size and flatness
Give sizes with a tolerance and a percent limit on size change and distortion out of plane after water and heat, tested to ISO 2551.
Backing and pad
A latex or cotton backing holds the fibres and cuts shedding. Jute creeps on hard floors, so say if each rug needs a felt pad.
Moisture
Wet jute can show brown watermarks, weaken and grow mildew. For monsoon orders, require dry fibre, dry storage and a damp check before wrapping.

Tests and rules for jute rugs

ISO 105-X12 and ISO 105-B02
Rubbing fastness, dry and wet, under a method written to include floor coverings, plus xenon-arc light fastness for dyed jute, stating which blue wool reference set was used.
US 16 CFR 1630 and 1631
The US pill test splits at 6 ft and 24 sq ft: a 5 x 8 ft rug falls under 1630, a 4 x 6 ft rug under 1631. Seven of eight specimens must pass.
US fibre labelling
Floor coverings fall under the US Textile Act rules in 16 CFR 303: generic fibre names and percentages, the maker's or seller's name or RN, and country of origin.
EN 14041 and EN 1307
Both European floor-covering standards exclude loose-laid rugs and runners, so a seller quoting them for a jute rug is quoting the wrong document.

What moves the price of a jute rug

  • Weave: bouclé and chunky rugs use more yarn per square metre than a thin flatweave of the same size.
  • Colour: dyed jute adds a dyeing step and a lot approval that natural jute does not need.
  • Backing and pad: a latex or cotton backing, and a pad if ordered, add material and drying time.
  • Size and shape: large sizes, rounds, borders and hand weaving all add loom and finishing time.

Lead times and delivery

A stock weave in natural jute is usually quicker than a new design in dyed yarn, which needs a sample approved first. Large sizes and chunky weaves take longer on the loom, and monsoon damp adds drying days before packing. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per design in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver jute rugs rolled and wrapped against damp to homes, hotels, offices and showrooms, with a packing list by size and fibre lot, any lab reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Order pads with rugs that will lie on tile or wood.

Buying jute rugs for export

For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Customs classify by construction as well as fibre: a flat jute rug and a loop-pile jute rug sit in different lines of HS heading 5702, so put the weave on the proforma. Papers follow an AQL inspection under ISO 2859-1: invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and lab reports.

What we check for this order

  • One fibre lotWe check that bulk rugs come from the approved fibre lot, or that each lot is packed apart.
  • Dry rugs onlyWe look for watermarks, mildew and damp before wrapping, since wet jute browns and weakens.
  • Weave against sampleWe compare loop or weave density with the approved sample, because loose weaves shed and flatten.
  • Weight and sizeWe weigh and measure pieces of each design against the agreed g/m² and size tolerance.

Questions buyers ask

Can a jute rug go in a bathroom or outdoors?

No. Wet jute can show brown watermarks, lose strength and grow mildew if it stays damp, and retailer guides say jute rugs are not suited to outdoor use. For bathrooms and wet entrances, look at cotton bath mats or backed door mats instead.

Can a jute rug be washed in a machine?

No. Care guides say jute rugs should not be machine washed: spot clean with as little water as possible, then dry the area fully. If your customers need a rug they can wash, ask about cotton backed by a wash-test report.

Will a repeat order match the first one?

Not always. Natural jute changes colour from bale to bale, so a second order from a new lot can show a shade difference. Keep a sealed sample of the first order and ask for a shade check against it before packing.

How do I tell hand-woven from machine-made jute?

Hand-woven jute usually shows small irregularities in the weave, while low-end machine-made jute tends to look uniform and can feel stiff. Ask for the sample to be made the same way as the bulk, and name the method on the order.

How soon will I hear back about carpets and rugs?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
