Buying cotton rugs in Bangladesh
Cotton rugs come flatwoven, in chenille or from fabric strips, or with a tufted or terry pile, including bath mats. Bangladesh has its own cotton flatweave tradition: Rangpur's shataranji, a geographical indication held by BSCIC, is woven from cotton yarn, jute yarn and wool. Homes, hotels and retailers buy them for bedrooms, kitchens and bathrooms.
Cotton rug faults often show only after washing: a rug that shrinks, or a deep shade that bleeds. Roptan finds a cotton rug manufacturer in Bangladesh for your build, asks for wash and fastness reports on every colour, checks the bulk against the approved sample, and delivers or ships.
How to brief a cotton rug manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Build and yarn
- Name the construction, the yarn count and ply, and for rag rugs whether the strips are new cut-offs or reclaimed cloth.
- Mass and pile
- Total mass in g/m², plus pile mass for tufted, chenille and terry rugs, both measured to ISO 8543.
- Washing claim
- If the label will say machine washable, ask for a test to ISO 6330 stating programme, cycles and size change in percent.
- Size after washing
- Set a percent limit on size change, measured on marked specimens to ISO 3759, and test flatness after water and heat to ISO 2551.
- Backing
- Latex for tufted rugs, a non-skid backing for bath mats if wanted. Tufted pieces are usually kept stretched until the latex dries, to avoid lost shape and mildew.
- Colours
- Give a reference for every shade and approve a lab dip or strike-off. Deep shades on cotton are where wash and rub staining usually shows.
Tests and labels for cotton rugs
- ISO 105-C06 and ISO 105-X12
- Colour fastness to washing, and to rubbing with a dry and a wet cloth, reported for each colour of the order.
- US 16 CFR 1630 and 1631
- Rugs over 6 ft on one side and over 24 sq ft follow 1630; rugs with no side over 6 ft and up to 24 sq ft follow 1631, which names mats.
- US fibre label
- Rugs count as floor coverings under 16 CFR 303: fibre names and percentages by weight, the maker's name or RN, and the country of origin.
- EU fibre labelling
- Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 does not exempt rugs, so fibre composition goes on the label; where backing and face differ, the face alone may be stated.
Lead times and delivery
Stock designs in ready-dyed yarn usually move faster than custom colours, which need dyeing and an approved lab dip or strike-off first. The wash test must pass before bulk starts, and latex-backed rugs need drying time that runs longer in the monsoon. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per design and colour in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver cotton rugs and bath mats folded or rolled, packed by design and colour, to homes, hotels, hospitals and shops. Each delivery carries a packing list, the wash and fastness reports you ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying cotton rugs for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Customs classify a cotton rug by its build: woven pile, plain weave, tufted and braided rugs fall in different HS lines, so the proforma should describe the construction, not just the fibre. Before loading, an AQL inspection under ISO 2859-1 checks size, colour, labels and backing.
Questions buyers ask
Are cotton rugs machine washable?
Only when a test shows it. A machine-washable claim should rest on a report giving the wash programme, the number of cycles and the size change for each colour. Without that report, sell the rug with spot-clean advice instead of a wash claim.
What is a chindi rug?
A rag rug woven with strips of cotton fabric as the weft, usually in colour blocks running from one edge to the other. Customs treat it as an ordinary warp-and-weft rug. Ask where the strips come from, and approve a sample, since colours vary with the fabric.
Do bath mats need a US flammability test?
Yes. 16 CFR 1631 covers small carpets and rugs and names mats within its size limits. A small rug that fails may be sold only with a permanent FLAMMABLE label, and one treated with a flame retardant is marked T. Test the construction you are buying.
Does a cotton rug need a care label?
Not under US federal rules. The Care Labeling Rule covers clothing and certain piece goods, not rugs, though the fibre label still applies. Any care wording on a rug comes from your programme or the seller's choice, so base it on a wash test.
How soon will I hear back about carpets and rugs?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
