Buying door mats in Bangladesh

A door mat scrapes dirt and water off shoes at an entrance. Mats are made from coir, the coconut husk fibre, from synthetic yarn or felt, or from moulded rubber or vinyl. News reports describe coir door mats made in Bangladesh by cottage units and by factories that buy coir fibre, and sold across the country. Hotels, offices, hospitals, apartment buildings and shops buy them in bulk.

Two points decide a door mat order: what the face is really made of, and how the backing behaves on your floor. Roptan finds a door mat manufacturer in Bangladesh for your face and backing, writes fibre, size and backing into the order, checks sample and bulk, and delivers.

Kinds of door mat

Woven coir mats

Coir yarn woven into a thick pile face, sometimes with stripes cut into the pile and a rubber-coated back. Choose them to scrape dirt at covered entrances.

Coir set in rubber or vinyl

Coir layered between rubber sheets and heat-pressed, or coir yarn set into a vinyl backing, so face and backing form one piece. Choose them for open, outdoor entrances.

Tufted loop-pile mats

Polyester loop pile coated with PVC, tufted into a non-woven base, heat-pressed into a pattern and glued to a heavy rubber backing. Choose them for indoor entrances and lobbies.

Printed felt and rope mats

Needle-punched polyester felt with a printed face and latex back, or woven polypropylene rope. Choose felt for logos indoors, and rope for an open mat that drains.

Moulded rubber and vinyl mats

Moulded rubber, sometimes with coir strips set in, or vented vinyl with traction dots. Choose them where mats sit in the rain or are washed down.

How to brief a door mat manufacturer in Bangladesh

Face fibre
Coir, polyester, polypropylene or felt. If you want pure coir, write 'coir yarn only, no blend' and have the sample fibre-tested.
Backing
Rubber, vinyl, latex or none, and whether it is moulded, glued or coated on. Try the backing on your own floor, dry and wet, at sample stage.
Size and thickness
Width and length with a tolerance, and total thickness in millimetres. Entrance mats in customs samples are often about 18 x 30 in (46 x 76 cm).
Indoor or outdoor
Coir is generally rated relatively waterproof and is one of the few natural fibres that resists saltwater. For printed colours outdoors, ask for weathering fastness to ISO 105-B10.
Mass and pile
Total mass in g/m² to ISO 8543; for tufted loop-pile mats, pile thickness to ISO 1766 and tufts per unit area to ISO 1763.
Logo or design
Artwork to scale, colour references and position, a printed or pressed sample approved before bulk, and rubbing fastness to ISO 105-X12 for printed faces.

Tests and rules for door mats

ISO 4919 for tufted mats
Tuft withdrawal force for mats with a tufted cut or loop pile: the check on whether the backing holds the yarn.
US 16 CFR 1631
The US small-rug flammability rule names mats. A mat with no side over 6 ft and no more than 24 sq ft must pass the pill test or carry a permanent FLAMMABLE label.
REACH entry 51
For the EU, four phthalates must stay below 0.1 percent of the plasticised material, which covers PVC, rubber and non-slip coatings but not natural latex; open-air-only articles have a narrow exemption.
EN 14041
This EU floor-covering standard excludes loose-laid barrier mats, so a seller citing it for a door mat cites the wrong document.

What moves the price of a door mat

  • Face fibre: pure coir, a coir blend or synthetic yarn, and how much goes into each mat.
  • Backing: rubber or vinyl adds material, and moulding under heat and pressure adds a press step.
  • Size and thickness: a larger, deeper mat uses more fibre and more backing.
  • Design: printing, logos and custom moulded patterns need artwork, a sample and sometimes a new mould.

Lead times and delivery

Plain mats in standard sizes are usually quicker than custom work. Custom work needs artwork and an approved sample, and a new moulded design needs its mould first. Coir and dyed faces must be dry before backing and packing. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per design in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver door mats stacked flat in bundles to hotels, offices, hospitals, apartment buildings and shops, with a packing list by design and size and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For imported mats we ask the seller for the import papers.

Buying door mats for export

Bangladesh records little export of door mats, so this page is written mainly for buyers inside the country. If you are importing, tell us the destination first: we check the backing against REACH for the EU, the pill-test rule for the US and the fibre label, then quote FOB Chattogram.

What we check for this order

  • Fibre contentIf you ordered pure coir, we have the sample fibre-tested so the face matches the fibre named on the order.
  • Backing bondWe flex corners and edges to check the backing is bonded across the mat, with no lifting or cracking.
  • Size, thickness and weightWe measure and weigh mats from each design against the approved sample and the order.
  • Print and colourWe rub printed faces and compare colours with the approved sample before bundling.

Questions buyers ask

Is coir good for an outdoor door mat?

Usually, yes. Brown coir is thick, strong and resists abrasion, and it is relatively waterproof for a natural fibre. For open entrances, choose coir set in rubber or vinyl, or with a rubber-coated back, so the mat holds together in the wet.

How do I know a coir mat is pure coir?

Ask for a fibre test on the sample and write 'coir only' into the order. A 2024 report on one coir cluster in Bangladesh describes door mats made from coir yarn mixed with loose coir fibre, while ropes there mix coir with garment waste, plastic and nylon. If a blend suits your use, agree the mix in writing.

Will a rubber-backed mat slip on tiles?

It depends on the backing, the floor and whether the floor is wet, so test rather than assume. Try the approved sample on your own tiles, dry and wet, before bulk, and pick rubber, vinyl or latex backing on that result.

Can you put our logo on the mats?

Yes: printed on a felt face, heat-pressed into a tufted loop-pile mat or moulded into rubber. Send artwork to scale and colour references, then approve a sample before bulk; a new moulded design needs its own mould, which adds time.

How soon will I hear back about carpets and rugs?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
