Buying hand-tufted carpets in Bangladesh
A hand-tufted carpet is built in three steps: yarn is fed through a stretched primary backing with a hand-held tufting gun, the back is coated with latex to lock the tufts, and a secondary cloth goes over it before the face is sheared and finished. Hotels, offices and homes buy them in wool, acrylic, cotton or cotton-viscose blends, and importers abroad buy them by design.
The latex coat is where a hand-tufted carpet can go wrong: tufts pull out, the backing peels, or a rug rolled before it dries loses shape and grows mildew. Roptan finds a hand-tufted carpet manufacturer in Bangladesh for your construction, asks for tuft-bind and delamination results, checks curing and the sample, and delivers or ships.
How to brief a hand-tufted carpet manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Pile type and height
- Cut, loop or both, and pile thickness above the backing in millimetres, measured to ISO 1766 so sample and bulk are compared the same way.
- Pile mass and density
- Pile mass in g/m² to ISO 8543 and tufts per unit area to ISO 1763; together they show how much yarn is in the rug.
- Yarn
- Wool, acrylic, cotton or a cotton-viscose blend, with count and ply. The fibre sets the label, the fastness tests and the customs line.
- Backing
- Primary backing is often woven polypropylene; jute carpet backing cloth comes in primary and secondary kinds, specified to ISO 11860. Name both layers.
- Latex and curing
- Ask where and how long the latex dries. A tufted piece is usually kept stretched until the latex is dry, or it can lose shape and mildew.
- Colours and design
- Artwork to scale, a reference for every colour, and a sample tufted in your yarns and approved before bulk.
Tests for hand-tufted carpets
- ISO 4919 and ASTM D1335
- Tuft withdrawal force and tuft bind: how hard a tuft must be pulled before it comes out. Ask for the result on your own construction.
- ASTM D3936
- Resistance of the secondary backing to delamination, the check on whether the second cloth will peel away from the latex.
- ISO 9405
- Change in appearance after drum and hexapod tumbler tests. EN 1307 use classes exclude rugs, so ask for this test by name if wear matters.
- US 16 CFR 1630, 1631 and 303
- The pill test splits at 6 ft and 24 sq ft, and rugs carry US fibre labels; the pile fibre alone may be named where the backing is exempt.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on colour: custom shades need dyed yarn and an approved sample before bulk. Large sizes and many colours take longer to tuft, carving and washing add finishing days, and latex dries more slowly in humid weather. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per design in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver hand-tufted carpets rolled and wrapped, to hotels, offices, showrooms and homes, with a packing list by design and size, the test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Rugs are rolled only once the latex is fully dry.
Buying hand-tufted carpets for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Tufted rugs sit in HS heading 5703, split by fibre, and US rulings describe hand-tufted work as hand-hooked, with tufts inserted by hand or with a hand tool, so the invoice should state method, fibre and pile. An AQL inspection under ISO 2859-1 runs before loading.
Questions buyers ask
Is hand-tufted the same as hand-knotted?
No. A hand-tufted rug has its pile fed into a backing cloth with a tufting gun and held by latex; hand knotting is the method most used for oriental rugs. Importers sometimes call tufted rugs hand-woven, but customs treat them as tufted, so the invoice should say hand-tufted.
Why do tufts pull out of some tufted rugs?
Latex on the back anchors the tufts, so the coat and its drying decide how well they hold. A rug rolled before the latex is dry can also lose shape. Ask for tuft withdrawal and delamination results on your construction, and for drying on the frame.
Can you match our colours?
Yes, by sample. Send a physical colour standard for each shade, and approve a tufted sample in the dyed yarn before bulk. Ask for rubbing fastness, dry and wet, on strong shades in wool, viscose or cotton pile, tested on each colour of the order.
Is Bangladesh a large source of tufted rugs?
No. Tufted floor coverings are a small part of Bangladesh's recorded rug exports, and most of what it ships is woven. That makes the choice of maker matter: we confirm tufting capacity, drying space and test results before we quote.
How soon will I hear back about carpets and rugs?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
