Buying fresh fruit in Bangladesh
Fresh fruit from Bangladesh means mango first, then litchi, jackfruit, pineapple, lemon, guava and other seasonal fruit. Mango exports run from late May to late September and travel by air. Buyers abroad are importers, grocers and restaurants serving South Asian and local customers; at home, hotels, supermarkets and caterers.
A fresh fruit exporter in Bangladesh has a short season, a pest to control and a flight to catch. Roptan sources from verified packers, writes variety, maturity and treatment into the order, checks the fruit and the papers, and books the treatment slot and freight before the season opens.
How to brief a fresh fruit exporter in Bangladesh
- Fruit, variety and weight
- Name the fruit and the variety, and give a weight band per fruit and per carton.
- Maturity at packing
- Mature-green mango keeps 14 to 28 days at 10 to 13 °C, depending on variety; state the maturity you want at packing. Litchi must be picked ripe.
- Temperature by fruit
- Most mango varieties suffer chilling injury below 10 °C: grey, scald-like skin and uneven ripening. Litchi keeps 3 to 5 weeks at 2 to 5 °C and 90 to 95% humidity.
- Ripening on arrival
- If you ripen mango yourself, say so: it ripens well at 20 to 23 °C, and ripe fruit can then be held at 7 to 8 °C.
- Treatment
- State whether your import permit requires hot water or vapour heat treatment, and for which variety, so the slot is booked to match the harvest.
- Time to the airport
- An exporters' association says fruit must reach Dhaka airport within eight hours, as the airport lacks cooling space. Plan packing around the flight.
Plant health, treatment and residue papers
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Issued by the Plant Quarantine Wing of DAE through its online portal, under IPPC's ISPM 12. It records that the lot meets your country's import requirements.
- Hot water treatment
- USDA describes 45 to 90 minutes in hot water, depending on fruit size, until the fruit's interior reaches 46 °C. Your market's plant health rules set the conditions.
- ISPM 26
- The IPPC standard for pest free areas for tephritid fruit flies, an alternative some markets accept to treating each lot.
- EN 15662:2018
- The European multimethod for pesticide residues in plant foods. Results are read against your market's limits; the European Commission sets the EU's.
Lead times and delivery
The calendar sets the time. Mango takes about four to five months from flowering to ripe fruit, and export runs from late May to late September; litchi has a shorter window. Packing, any treatment slot and cargo space should be booked before the season opens. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers to hotels, supermarkets, caterers and juice makers in ventilated cartons, kept cool for the fruit concerned. You receive a packing list by variety, the reports you ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Bruised, scalded or insect-damaged fruit found on arrival is recorded and taken up with the seller.
Buying fresh fruit for export
Fresh fruit flies from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, Dhaka, quoted FCA Dhaka airport or CPT to your airport; sea freight for mango is not yet an established route. Documents: commercial invoice, packing list, air waybill, phytosanitary certificate with any treatment stated, certificate of origin or REX statement, and residue reports.
Questions buyers ask
Which mango varieties can you supply?
Amrapali makes up about 80% of Bangladesh's mango shipments and is the practical choice for volume. Himsagar, Langra, Fajli and BARI-4 are also exported. Exporters say colour limits some sales and want more varieties that turn yellow when ripe, so name the variety you need.
Do mangoes need hot water treatment?
Some markets require hot water or vapour heat treatment against fruit fly; others do not. The importing country sets the rule and the conditions, per fruit. Tell us your import permit's terms, and we book the treatment to match the harvest.
Can mango and litchi travel together?
Not well. Litchi keeps at 2 to 5 °C, while most mangoes suffer chilling injury below 10 °C. Mixed at one setting, either the litchi dries and browns or the mango scalds, so they are packed and held apart.
Can mango go by sea?
Not yet as an established route. Air is the main way fresh fruit leaves Bangladesh, and mature-green mango keeps about two to four weeks at 10 to 13 °C, which leaves little margin for a long voyage. We quote air freight.
How soon will I hear back about vegetables and fruits?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
