Buying ETP upgrades in Bangladesh

An ETP upgrade changes an existing plant so it treats more flow, meets its outlet limits or costs less to run, usually by reusing the tanks already built. Dyeing and washing units in Bangladesh upgrade when production grows or an outlet test fails, and colour is usually the reason now. The right upgrade depends on which stage is failing, and only measurement shows that.

An ETP upgrade supplier in Bangladesh should start from samples, not a catalogue of add-ons. Roptan briefs verified sellers with your flow records and stage results, asks each to name the bottleneck and the outlet values it will guarantee against that baseline, compares the answers and arranges the work through the seller you choose.

Kinds of ETP upgrade

MBBR retrofit

Plastic carriers added to existing aeration tanks, filling up to about 70 percent of the volume, grow a biofilm that raises capacity and lowers sludge production without a bigger footprint. Choose it when the plant is full and the land fixed.

MBR conversion

Membranes replace the clarifier so the aeration tank runs at higher solids, with simpler retrofitting. Choose it when treated water goes on to reverse osmosis.

Aeration upgrade

New diffusers and a blower sized to the oxygen demand, with a standby blower. Choose it when dissolved oxygen is low or diffusers are worn or clogged.

Colour polishing

Chemical flocculation with dissolved air flotation, electrocoagulation, sand filtration, activated carbon, oxidation or membranes after the existing stages. These are generally expensive, so prove the need first.

Controls and instruments

An automatic pH controller, DO probes, flow meters and sampling points. Cheap against new tanks, and they make every other stage work.

Removing chlorination

Many older plants have a chlorination unit. In a dyeing ETP it can form AOX and is not recommended, so an upgrade may take a stage out.

How to specify an ETP upgrade

Stage-by-stage audit
Sample the equalisation tank outflow, after the chemical stage, after the biological stage and at the outlet, so the failing stage is found before anything is bought.
Equalisation first
A common rule of thumb is a tank of at least one third of the 24-hour flow. A surging load can look like an undersized biological stage.
Clarifier next
Surface area governs settling, and filamentous bulking stops sludge settling at all. More aeration will not fix a clarifier that cannot hold the solids.
Nutrients and pH
Textile effluent is usually short of nitrogen and phosphorus, and pH outside 6 to 8 inhibits the bacteria. Both cost far less to fix than new tanks.
Colour target
Name the ECR 2023 limits, including the colour limit. Biology alone removes little colour, so a colour upgrade means chemical, oxidation or membrane polishing.
Whole flow, no dilution
The upgrade must treat the full flow. Diluting the outlet with fresh or cleaner water to meet a limit is not acceptable.
Works while running
Say whether the plant must keep treating during the work, as it changes the sequence and the cost.

Rules, references and tests for an upgrade

ECR 2023 and DoE monitoring plans
The Environment Conservation Rules 2023 set the limits. The DoE has said it plans online ETP monitoring; it is a plan, not a live system, but outlet flow meters and logging prepare for it.
ZDHC Wastewater Guidelines
A brand programme with foundational, progressive and aspirational levels. If a buyer audits you, state which level the upgrade must reach.
Before and after lab tests
Composite samples taken to ISO 5667-10 during normal production and tested at an ISO/IEC 17025 accredited lab, before and after the work.
EN 12255-1:2024
The European general design principles for wastewater treatment plants, a design reference rather than a Bangladeshi requirement.

What moves the price of an ETP upgrade

  • How much of the existing civil work can be reused.
  • Carrier volume or membrane area added.
  • Blower and diffuser size.
  • The polishing stage chosen: flotation, filtration, oxidation or membranes.
  • Instruments and automation.
  • Whether the plant must keep running during the work.

Lead times and delivery

An upgrade has no fixed lead time. The audit itself, imported carriers, diffusers or membranes, any civil changes, work done while the plant keeps running and design approval move the date most. Ask each seller to set out the sequence of work against your production calendar. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

We deliver carriers, diffusers, blowers, polishing units and instruments to your factory anywhere in Bangladesh and arrange installation and commissioning through the seller. Handover should include the before and after lab results, updated as-built drawings, the revised dosing chart and O&M notes, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Audit baselineWe ask for stage samples and flow records before the proposal, so the upgrade answers the stage that fails.
  • Guarantee against the baselineWe check the guaranteed outlet values are written against the measured baseline, for the whole flow.
  • Delivered as orderedWe confirm carrier fill or membrane area, blower and diffusers match the order, with a commissioning test of the aeration.
  • Same parameters before and afterWe ask for the same parameters tested before and after the work at an accredited lab during normal production.

Questions buyers ask

Our ETP fails on colour. What should we upgrade?

Usually a polishing stage, because biology alone removes little colour. Options include chemical flocculation with flotation, electrocoagulation, filtration, oxidation or membranes. BGMEA told the Environment Minister in June 2026 that the colour parameters are hard to meet, so ask each seller for a jar or pilot test on your outlet first.

How much capacity does an MBBR retrofit add?

There is no general figure. It depends on your load, the carrier fill and whether aeration and the clarifier can keep up. A stage audit should come first; then ask each seller to state the new design flow and load, and guarantee the outlet at that flow.

Can an upgrade cut running cost?

Often. Better aeration and automatic dosing control reduce waste, and an older Bangladesh guide says automatic control proves cost effective. Many ETPs in Bangladesh have been reported as underused because of running cost, so a cheaper plant is likelier to stay on.

Will the DoE monitor ETP outlets online?

It plans to. In July 2026 the DoE Director General told the state news agency that the government plans to monitor ETPs online and to put IP cameras in pollution-prone areas, but no start date, parameters or rule were given. Inlet and outlet flow meters with data logging are a sensible part of an upgrade now.

How soon will I hear back about ETP plant?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
