Buying desktop and laptop computers in Bangladesh

These are the machines offices buy in batches: laptops of several kinds, tower, small form factor and all-in-one desktops, and thin clients, for staff, labs and field teams. Most are imported: one group has assembled laptops and desktops here since 2018, and Export Promotion Bureau figures show almost no computer exports.

Two laptops with the same processor name can differ in soldered memory, drive type, ports and whose warranty covers them. Kinds of desktop and laptop computer

Business laptops

The usual clamshell design. For mainstream office work a current laptop processor is enough, so this suits most staff, especially where power cuts are frequent.

2-in-1 laptops

The keyboard detaches or folds away. One running a general purpose desktop system is sold as a laptop; one on a mobile system is a tablet and may not run your office software.

Rugged laptops

Built for strong vibration, extreme temperatures and wet or dusty places, such as building sites. Bulkier, heavier and much dearer than a regular laptop, so buy them only for field staff.

Mobile workstations

Much more powerful laptops for CAD, rendering and video editing on the move. If the work never leaves one desk, a desktop workstation does the same job.

Tower and small form factor desktops

The fastest desktop processors still beat laptop ones, at the cost of more power and heat. Small form factor has no agreed definition, so judge the case by volume in litres and expansion slots.

All-in-one desktops and thin clients

An all-in-one puts processor, screen and speakers in one unit: quick to set up, hard to upgrade. A thin client relies on a server and network for processing and storage.

Workload per group of users: Say what each group runs: office work, accounts, CAD or video. That decides between laptop, desktop and workstation better than a processor name does.
Memory size and slots: Many laptops have soldered memory, so the size you order is often the size for life. Ask whether free slots exist and which module type and generation they take.
Storage: State drive type, interface and capacity per unit. A solid-state drive is the usual boot drive; a 5,400 or 7,200 rpm hard disk suits bulk storage only.
Ports and wired network: Built-in Ethernet is now rare on mainstream laptops. For a wired office, ask for a port or a USB Ethernet adaptor, and list display and USB ports.
Battery and backup: Load shedding reached Dhaka in August 2026. Give laptop users a battery that lasts the working day, and each desktop a UPS sized to your usual outage.
Heat and dust: Summer maxima of 38 to 41 °C and dust-clogged fans shorten the life of machines in rooms without air conditioning. Plan fan cleaning.

Safety reports, ratings and warranty papers

IEC 62368-1: The safety standard for audio, video and IT equipment, replacing IEC 60950-1. Ask for the test report for the exact laptop and adaptor, or the desktop's power supply.
Rugged ratings: Ruggedness is not standardised. Sellers show it through certifications such as MIL-STD-810, an IP rating or ATEX, so ask which test the model passed.
Energy Star: A voluntary energy-efficiency programme, not a Bangladesh legal requirement. The logo helps when comparing power use between models.
Local brand warranty: Get in writing that the warranty is the brand's own, honoured in Bangladesh, with its length and on-site or carry-in service.

Questions buyers ask

Should our staff get laptops or desktops?

Laptops, for office and browser work. The performance gap with desktops is no longer significant for mainstream tasks, and a charged battery carries staff through power cuts. Choose desktops or workstations for CAD, rendering or video.

Can we add memory to the laptops later?

Often not. Since 2015 virtually all laptops have a soldered processor, and many have soldered memory too. Order the memory the machine will need for its life, or ask for a model with a free SO-DIMM slot. Laptop modules do not fit desktop slots.

Are computers made in Bangladesh?

Very few. One group has assembled laptops and desktops here since 2018; the rest are imported. Roptan sources and checks computers from verified sellers and does not make them.

Are used ex-corporate laptops worth buying in bulk?

Take care. A May 2026 report found used lots with the battery, charger, memory or SSD swapped for generic parts, and machines that worked for 60 to 90 days, about as long as the reseller's own warranty. New units with the brand's local warranty are the safer choice.

How soon will I hear back about computers and IT equipment?
