Buying brooms and brushes in Bangladesh
A broom is a long-handled brush of stiff fibres for sweeping, often with plastic filament today, made hard, soft or in between. Brushes add scrub brushes, toilet-cleaning brushes, and shoe and clothes brushes. Shops, supermarkets, hotels, hospitals and cleaning contractors buy them in Bangladesh, and importers buy household ranges for retail abroad.
Two brooms that look alike can sweep and wear very differently, because the filament and the way it is set decide both. A brooms and brush manufacturer in Bangladesh should quote them in numbers, not as 'soft' or 'hard'. Roptan sources from verified makers, fixes filament and tuft setting in the order, and checks the bulk.
How to brief a brooms and brush manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Filament material
- Name it: nylon usually absorbs little water and recovers well; polyester recovers its shape better still; PP stays stiff when wet and resists most oils and acids; polystyrene is mainly for looks.
- Diameter and trim length
- Give filament diameter and trimmed length in mm with the material. Together they decide how stiff the brush feels, so 'soft' or 'hard' alone is not a specification.
- Tuft count and setting
- State tufts per head and how they are held: stapled or anchored in drilled holes, fused to the plastic, or epoxy-set. The method decides how firmly the tufts stay in.
- Handle
- State material, length, diameter and thread in millimetres, so heads and handles from different lots fit each other.
- Colours and grips
- For the EU, cadmium must stay below 0.01 % by weight of the plastic, and plastic parts, soft grips and coatings included, below 0.1 % of four restricted phthalates.
- Outdoor use
- Plain PP heads and handles crack and craze in sunlight without UV-absorbing additives and antioxidants. State outdoor use and ask for the stabiliser.
Standards and tests for brooms and brushes
- Bangladesh
- The only brush standard on BSTI's mandatory certification list is for manual toothbrushes, BDS ISO 20126:2023. None was found for household brooms or cleaning brushes.
- Tuft retention
- No household broom or brush pull test method was found. Agree one in writing with the seller, with the force, tufts tested and pass mark.
- REACH Annex XVII entries 23 and 51
- EU limits on cadmium in coloured plastic and on four phthalates in plasticised material, which includes grips and coatings. Ask for a report on each colour and grip.
- ISO 1133-1 and ISO 180
- Melt flow rate and Izod impact on the moulded head or handle, checked against the resin datasheet, show whether the quoted grade was used.
Lead times and delivery
Dates depend on whether moulds exist for the head and handle, on filament supply in your colour and diameter, and on any tests you set, such as a tuft pull test or chemical reports for the EU. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers brooms and brushes to shops, supermarkets, hotels, hospitals and cleaning contractors in Dhaka, Chattogram and elsewhere. Heads and handles can travel separately in matching counts. Each lot carries the packing list, any agreed test results and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying brooms and brushes for export
For importers Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong). Check the tariff line: household brooms and brushes, shoe and clothes brushes included, usually go under subheading 9603.90, while 9603.29 is for brushes used on the person, such as hair and nail brushes. Your broker confirms the line. Documents include the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, the seller's ERC and the agreed reports.
Questions buyers ask
Nylon, polyester or PP bristles for a floor broom?
It depends on the floor and the water. As brush references describe them, PP stays stiff when wet and resists most oils and acids, which suits wet floors and chemicals; nylon and polyester absorb little water and recover their shape better after bending.
How do I stop bristles falling out?
Fix how the tufts are held and test it. Stapled or anchored tufts sit in drilled holes; fused filament is welded to the plastic; epoxy-set tufts sit in a seal with no cavities. No household pull test was found, so agree one in writing and Roptan has it run on the sample.
Which tariff line covers a toilet-cleaning brush?
Usually subheading 9603.90, with household brooms and brushes. Subheadings 9603.21 and 9603.29 cover toothbrushes and brushes used on the person, such as hair, nail and shaving brushes, so a cleaning brush entered there is in the wrong line. Your customs broker confirms the full code.
Do brushes for a food plant need a different build?
Often, yes. Epoxy-set brushes, which leave no tuft cavities where dirt can sit, are described as the build used in food processing and pharmaceutical work. Say where the brush will be used, and if it touches food, ask the seller for food-contact papers as well.
How soon will I hear back about plastic household goods?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
