Buying bangla tossa (btr) in Bangladesh

BTR is the trade code for Bangla Tossa Rejection, R being the trade's name for this grade of long Tossa jute, the fibre of Corchorus olitorius. It is usually sold uncut, with the root ends on, and trade reports split it by letter marks. Trade reports name Indian and Nepali mills as regular buyers. A Bangla Tossa (BTR) exporter in Bangladesh needs Department of Jute licences.

Roptan sources BTR from licensed exporters. We have each mark described in writing and a sample sealed, open bales at loading to compare them with it, and check weight and moisture. We confirm the current export terms before quoting. You deal with Roptan only.

BTR and the Tossa grades around it

Uncut BTR

Long Tossa baled with the root ends on, the usual form of BTR. Choose it when your mill cuts the roots itself; agree how much root a bale may carry.

BTR with a letter mark

Trade reports split BTR into lots with extra letters after the code. The Jute Rules hold no schedule for these marks, so get each one described in writing and sampled.

Lettered Tossa grades

Tossa graded after the roots are cut is usually sold as BT Special and BTA to BTE. Choose one when you want the roots off before shipment.

How to brief a Bangla Tossa (BTR) exporter in Bangladesh

Code and mark
BTR plus any letter mark, with the seller's written description and a sealed sample. The sample, not the code, then settles a dispute.
Root content
How much root and hard barky end you accept per bale, and whether excess is deducted from the weight. Rooty jute usually lowers spinning yield.
Defects to refuse
In the trade's usual terms: specky fibre with bark specks, croppy fibre with hard black tops, runners of tangled strands, and hunka, hard barky fibre.
Fineness
A grade code does not fix it. One BJRI study measured Tossa at 36.60 to 40.20 microns by air-flow and found no link to commercial grade.
Moisture
Your own limit and test method. The Jute (Licensing and Enforcement) Rules 1964 bar trading jute wetter than its natural dry state, or mixed with water or sand.
Crop year and month
Tossa is harvested after white jute, from July into September. Name the crop year and shipment month: by November, higher Tossa qualities can be gone.

Licences, rules and export approval for BTR

Jute Act 2017, section 5
Every jute trader and press owner needs a Department of Jute licence. It cannot be transferred and lapses at the end of the financial year.
Raw jute exporter licence
A separate Department of Jute licence to export raw jute. Its papers include the ERC, TIN and trade licence; ask for the current copy.
Jute (Licensing and Enforcement) Rules 1964
Grading follows trade grades the government approves from time to time. A bale ticket showing a better grade than the jute inside is overgrading.
Export Policy 2024-2027, Appendix-2
Raw jute was put on the conditional-export list in September 2025: shipments need Ministry of Commerce approval for a stated quantity, granted firm by firm, on changing terms.

What moves the price of BTR

  • The crop and stocks: in 2026 trade reports described a volatile market, with stockists holding fibre back.
  • Root content and defects, since rooty, barky fibre usually yields less yarn per tonne.
  • Export approval, which has come as set quantities for named firms and limits who can ship at once.
  • The route: since June 2025 India admits Bangladeshi jute only through the Nhava Sheva seaport, not land ports.

Lead times and delivery

There is no standard lead time for BTR. Tossa is sown from April, cut about four months later and retted for about 20 days, so new-crop BTR follows the harvest from July into September. An export shipment also waits for approval of its quantity. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver BTR to your mill with a bale list giving each bale's grade, mark and weight, and inspection results. The Department of Jute treats wet jute and over-weighing as malpractice, so report a wet or short-weight bale to Roptan and we take it up with the seller.

Buying bangla tossa (btr) for export

Raw jute export has needed prior approval from the Ministry of Commerce since September 2025; Roptan confirms the current terms before quoting. Since June 2025 India has admitted jute from Bangladesh only through the Nhava Sheva seaport, so Indian mills receive BTR by sea. It is usually declared under HS 5303.10; your customs broker confirms it.

Questions buyers ask

Does the R in BTR mean the fibre is poor?

R is the trade's code for rejection and names the grade; it does not describe any one lot. BTR is usually sold uncut, so root content varies from lot to lot. Judge a lot on a sealed sample, a written definition of any mark, and opened bales.

Can I buy Tossa with the roots already cut?

Yes. Tossa graded with the roots cut is usually sold as BT Special or BTA to BTE, and the cut ends as BTCA and BTCB cuttings. Tell us whether you want long fibre only, uncut BTR or both; we quote each on its own sample.

Has the export of BTR been stopped before?

Yes. Trade reports say exports of uncut BTR and BWR were banned on 18 January 2018 under section 13 of the Jute Act 2017, after local industries asked for it to secure quality jute. They were allowed again from June 2019. We check the current rules before each quote.

How do I know the fibre suits my yarn?

Test it. A BJRI study found fineness important to spinning quality but unrelated to commercial grade, and in one comparison Tossa varieties grown at BJRI stations differed in spinning quality. Ask for fineness and strength results on samples drawn from your lot.

How soon will I hear back about raw jute?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
