Buying UHT milk in Bangladesh
UHT milk is liquid milk heated very hot for a few seconds and filled into sterile cartons, so it keeps unopened without a fridge. Hotels, caterers, offices and retailers in Bangladesh buy it where cold storage is short, and importers buy it because, unlike fresh milk, it travels in a dry container.
A UHT milk supplier in Bangladesh should tell you what is inside the carton, not only the fat on the label. Roptan sources from verified processors, has the seller declare fresh or reconstituted milk in the order, checks the lot's test report and the seals, and delivers or loads your container.
How to specify UHT milk
- Fat class
- State whole, semi-skimmed or skimmed, and the fat to one decimal place with the test method, so every quote prices the same milk.
- Protein
- Ask for protein at the stated fat. EU rules set at least 2.9 percent for milk at 3.5 percent fat; a low figure can point to added water or weak powder.
- Milk base
- Fresh, reconstituted or a blend, named in the contract and on the label proof.
- Heat treatment
- UHT usually means above 140 °C for two to five seconds. Direct heating, by steam injection or infusion, holds the milk hot for less time than indirect plate or tube heating.
- Carton and seals
- Milk and pack are sterilised separately and sealed in a sterile zone, so a weak seal spoils well-heated milk. State carton size and cases per pallet.
- Shelf life left
- Unopened UHT milk usually keeps six to nine months at room temperature, but the printed date binds. State the months you need left on arrival.
Standards, tests and papers for UHT milk
- BSTI licence and mark
- Ask for the processor's BSTI licence naming the exact product. Low-fat and flavoured milk were reported added to BSTI's mandatory list in 2020.
- Lot test report
- FAO groups milk tests under composition, hygiene, added water, preservatives, added solids and drug residues. Ask for each on your lot.
- Regulation (EU) No 1308/2013
- Sets fat classes and a protein minimum for drinking milk. Not Bangladesh law, but a clear base for an export contract.
- BFSA and halal
- Milk sold in Bangladesh falls under the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (Food Safety Act 2013); halal certification comes from the Islamic Foundation Bangladesh.
Lead times and delivery
No typical lead time can be given for UHT milk. Stock in the processor's own cartons moves fastest. Private label waits for artwork and printed carton material, and seasonal milk supply can stretch a large order. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
UHT milk needs no chilling, but cartons crush and leak when pallets are overstacked or left in rain. We deliver across Bangladesh in covered trucks with the packing list, batch codes, the test report where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3), and check dates and damaged cases on arrival.
Buying UHT milk for export
UHT milk falls under HS heading 0401 with other unconcentrated milk; your customs broker confirms the line. Cartons ship in dry containers, FOB Chattogram. The EU admits milk products only from third countries on its lists, so we check your market's rules before any sample leaves. Documents usually include a certificate of origin, a health certificate where required and the lab report.
Questions buyers ask
Is UHT milk the same as pasteurised milk?
No. Pasteurised milk is heated less, must stay in a fridge and usually keeps about two weeks. UHT milk is heated above 140 °C for a few seconds and filled aseptically, so it keeps for months unopened. Once opened, it needs a fridge like any milk.
How can I tell if the milk is made from powder?
Not reliably by taste. Ask the seller to declare fresh or reconstituted milk in the contract and check the label matches. Read protein against fat: a low result can point to weak powder or added water. A plant visit shows whether raw milk arrives at all.
Why does UHT milk taste different from fresh milk?
The short, high heat can brown milk slightly and give a cooked note, known as Maillard browning. Direct steam heating usually changes the flavour less than indirect heating. Approve a sample and keep sealed cartons from it as the reference for the bulk.
How much shelf life should be left on delivery?
Set a minimum in the order: the seller's printed use-by date binds, not the typical keeping time. Tell us how many months you need left when the cartons reach you, and we check each lot's date against it before it leaves.
How soon will I hear back about dairy products and honey?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
