Buying honey in Bangladesh
Honey in Bangladesh is usually sold by the flower it comes from: mustard, black cumin, litchi and jujube from farmland, kholisha from the Sundarbans mangroves, and multi-floral honey from mixed sources. Retailers, hotels, bakeries and food makers buy it in jars, pails or drums, and importers buy it for shelves abroad.
Honey is easy to dilute with syrup and quick to ferment when wet. A honey supplier in Bangladesh should show test results for both. Roptan sources from verified packers, asks for the floral source and harvest area, has your lot tested and checks the seals before it is delivered or loaded.
How to specify honey
- Floral source and area
- Name the flower and district, with the tolerance you accept. A single-flower honey is mainly, not wholly, from that flower.
- Moisture
- The EU limit is 20 percent for most honey. Ask for a refractometer reading on every lot.
- Freshness
- HMF and diastase show heating and age. EU rules ask HMF of 40 mg/kg or less, or 80 for declared tropical-origin honey, and diastase of at least 8.
- Processing
- Heat delays crystallisation but raises HMF and lowers enzymes. Fine filtering removes pollen and must be declared in the EU.
- Sugars
- EU criteria ask fructose plus glucose of at least 60 g per 100 g and, for most honey, sucrose of no more than 5 g.
- Pack
- Glass or food-grade plastic jars, pails or drums, sealed tight, because honey draws water from humid air.
Standards and tests for honey
- Council Directive 2001/110/EC
- The EU honey directive: composition, freshness and naming rules, and nothing may be added to honey. A common reference even for buyers outside the EU.
- Directive (EU) 2024/1438
- Requires each country of origin, with its share of a blend, on EU labels, with national rules applying from 14 June 2026. Keep harvest records per lot.
- Isotope test for added sugar
- Stable carbon isotope analysis detects cane or corn syrup. Rice and beet syrups are not caught by it and need other methods.
- BSTI and BFSA
- Honey sold in Bangladesh falls under the Bangladesh Food Safety Authority, and BSTI was reported to list honey among its priority market checks for Ramadan 2026. Ask for the packer's BSTI licence.
Lead times and delivery
No typical lead time can be given. Honey already in a packer's store moves fastest. A single-flower honey depends on its harvest and that year's weather, a lab panel on the lot adds days, and private label waits for printed jars or labels. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Honey travels at room temperature, but heat raises HMF over time and humid air can wet a loose drum, so it should be stored cool and shut. We deliver to retailers, hotels and food makers with the packing list, batch and harvest details, the lab report where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3), and check seals on arrival.
Buying honey for export
Natural honey ships under HS 0409, FOB Chattogram, in drums for packers abroad or in jars for retail. For the EU, a tropical-origin declaration changes the HMF limit and labels must show each origin country and its share. We check your market's honey import rules before samples are sent. Documents usually include a certificate of origin, the lab reports and halal where needed.
Questions buyers ask
Has honey gone bad if it crystallises?
No. Crystallising is natural and does not mean the honey has expired. Crystals form fastest at 13 to 17 °C and melt at 40 to 50 °C, so gentle warming makes it liquid again, while strong heat harms its enzymes.
Why does honey ferment?
Too much water. Ripe honey is usually 15.5 to 18 percent water, and fermentation usually begins once the water content rises well above 25 percent. Honey also draws moisture from humid air, so a loose lid in the monsoon is a risk. Ask for moisture on every lot.
Can a lab prove honey is pure?
A panel comes close; one test does not. Moisture, HMF and diastase show freshness and heating, sugar figures show composition, and an isotope test catches cane or corn syrup. Rice and beet syrups need other methods. We ask for the panel on your lot and keep sealed samples.
Why do quotes for the same honey differ so much?
Floral source, moisture, processing and testing can all differ behind the same name. Compare quotes on flower, moisture, HMF, pack and test panel. Honey blended with syrup undercuts genuine honey, so treat a price far below the rest as a reason to test.
How soon will I hear back about dairy products and honey?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
