Buying tertiary filtration in Bangladesh

Tertiary filtration is the polishing stage after secondary treatment. It takes out the fine solids the clarifier missed, and can add carbon for trace organics and a disinfection step, which always comes last. Buyers are sewage plants facing the coliform limit and factories that want to reuse water; the central plant planned for Zone 2A of the economic zone at Mirsarai includes a reuse water pipeline.

A tertiary filtration supplier in Bangladesh has to match the polish to the use. We take your secondary effluent data and target to verified sellers, check that the filter, carbon and disinfection are sized as one train, and deliver the equipment. The seller installs and commissions it.

Kinds of tertiary filtration

Granular media filters

Beds of sand or sand with anthracite, cleaned by backwashing with reversed water and air. In drinking water practice the sand is usually 0.5 to 1.0 mm in beds 0.6 to 1.2 m deep; wastewater polishing filters work the same way.

Slow sand filters

A biofilm on the sand does the work at a low loading rate, so a large plant needs extensive land. A low-power option for sites with land; the design data comes from drinking water.

Activated carbon filters

Granular carbon after secondary treatment adsorbs organic micropollutants, such as pharmaceutical residues, that biology leaves behind. Spent carbon can be thermally reactivated, at an energy cost.

Membrane filtration

Microfiltration or ultrafiltration membranes, often as a membrane bioreactor that replaces the secondary clarifier. Smaller footprint and suited to reuse, but membranes foul and need cleaning.

UV and chlorine disinfection

The final step. UV adds no chemical but removes no particles or dissolved matter; chlorine or sodium hypochlorite leaves a residual. Ozone is a third option.

How to brief a tertiary filtration supplier in Bangladesh

End use
Say where the water goes: river, cooling, toilet flushing or irrigation. The use sets the turbidity, pathogen and salinity targets, and whether tertiary treatment is needed at all.
Discharge target
For treated sewage, the gazette lists total coliform at 1,000 CFU per 100 mL under ECR 2023 Schedule 3, with chlorination before final discharge.
Water ahead of UV
Solids shield organisms from UV light, so the filter must deliver low turbidity. Ask for the UV transmittance assumed at the design flow.
UV lamps
Ask for lamp life in hours, the cleaning method and the disposal route for spent lamps, since lamps must be cleaned and replaced to hold the dose.
Backwash
State how much backwash water and air the filter needs, how often it backwashes and where the dirty backwash water will go.
Media data
Ask for media to the European drinking water product standards and, for carbon, the iodine number and its test standard on the data sheet.

Standards for tertiary filtration and reuse

EN 12255-16:2021 and 12255-14:2023
The current European parts on physical filtration and on disinfection at treatment plants; the 2005 and 2004 editions are withdrawn.
EN 12904, EN 12909 and EN 12915-1
Drinking water product standards for silica sand, anthracite and granular activated carbon. Not wastewater standards, but a fair reference for media quality.
ISO 20468 and ISO 20469
ISO 20468 evaluates reuse treatment, with parts on UV (Part 4:2021) and membranes (Part 5:2021); ISO 20469:2018 grades reuse water quality.
ISO 16075
Guidelines for using treated wastewater for irrigation, in seven parts, including disinfection (Part 5:2021) and monitoring (Part 4:2021).

What moves the price of tertiary filtration

  • Reuse quality: each step from discharge to reuse adds stages, capital and running cost.
  • Filter type and area, and the backwash water and air it uses.
  • Carbon use and reactivation, which takes significant energy.
  • UV lamp number and power, and lamp replacement.
  • Membrane fouling, which raises pressure, energy and cleaning frequency, and the replacement interval.

Lead times and delivery

No fair figure covers every polishing stage. Time grows with imported membranes or UV units, filters built in concrete rather than as steel vessels, carbon bought in bulk and a pilot run on your effluent. A packaged filter and UV unit for a modest flow moves faster. Roptan confirms dates and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver to site anywhere in Bangladesh, with media in bags or bulk and vessels lifted into place. The seller loads the media, commissions the backwash and the disinfection, and trains your operators on cleaning and lamp changes. Handover includes media data sheets, O&M manuals, warranties, the polished water test report and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

What we check for this order

  • Filter and UV as oneWe check the filter's outlet quality matches the UV transmittance the disinfection is sized for.
  • Media papersWe check media data sheets against the product standard named, and the iodine number for carbon.
  • Test at the point of useWe confirm the guarantee is tested after the filter and after disinfection, sampled to ISO 5667-10 at an accredited lab.
  • Consumables planWe ask for the lamp, membrane and carbon replacement intervals in writing, since they drive running cost.

Questions buyers ask

Can we use UV instead of chlorine for treated sewage?

UV is widely replacing chlorine in sewage treatment elsewhere, but Schedule 3 of ECR 2023 says treated sewage is to be chlorinated before final discharge, with residual chlorine not above 0.2 mg/L. Our advice is to put the question to the Department of Environment in writing before you design UV alone. For reuse inside a factory the reuse standard you choose may decide.

Do we need tertiary filtration to discharge?

Not always. Treated sewage needs disinfection for the coliform limit, and a filter ahead of it helps, since solids shield organisms from UV light. Reuse usually needs more polish than discharge, and the end use decides how much.

Why add activated carbon?

Conventional treatment does not fully remove some organic micropollutants, such as pharmaceutical residues. Granular carbon after secondary treatment adsorbs them. Ask for the iodine number of the carbon and the plan for spent carbon, since reactivation takes significant energy.

How clean must reuse water be?

It depends on the use. ISO 20469 sets quality grades for reuse water and ISO 16075 covers irrigation. Name the use and the grade in the brief, so the seller sizes filtration and disinfection to it rather than to a guess.

How soon will I hear back about wastewater treatment plant?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the capacity, where it is needed and by when.
