Kinds of soft starter

Three-phase controlled soft starters

Thyristors control all three phases, which gives more even motor currents than two-phase control. Choose this kind where balanced current in every phase matters.

Two-phase controlled soft starters

Thyristors control two phases and the third stays connected, so the uncontrolled phase always shows some current imbalance against the other two. Ask the seller how the model handles this.

Inside-delta soft starters

Questions buyers ask

Soft starter, star-delta or drive?

All three reduce starting current. Star-delta is another reduced-voltage method; a soft starter ramps the voltage continuously and needs very few adjustments; a drive also sets the running speed. Choose a soft starter when the motor runs at one speed and a drive when speed must change.

How many times an hour can a soft starter start a motor?

It depends on the model and the duty. Makers publish a limit for each duty; in one maker's data, heavy duty allows half the starts of standard duty. Tell us the starts per hour and the start time, and we ask the seller for the figure in writing for the model quoted.

Do high-efficiency motors change the choice?

Does a soft starter help on a generator supply?
