Buying polyethylene bags in Bangladesh
A polyethylene bag is a sack or pouch of LDPE, LLDPE or HDPE film closed by a heat seal. In Bangladesh, film bags pack garments and other goods, and loose film liners go inside woven and jute sacks. Resin, thickness and size decide how a bag performs and what it costs. Bags for use inside Bangladesh also need a check against the polythene law.
Two bags of the same size can differ in thickness and resin, and so in grams of film. A polyethylene bag manufacturer in Bangladesh should quote both; Roptan sources from verified makers, puts thickness, resin and print into the quote, measures them on your lot, and delivers or ships. You deal with Roptan only.
How to brief a polyethylene bag manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Resin and colour
- LDPE, LLDPE, HDPE or a blend; virgin or recycled; clear, white or coloured. Ask for the melt-flow index, which helps confirm the resin grade.
- Size and shape
- Length and width in millimetres or inches, gussets, and any flap, the single layer that folds over the double-layer body.
- Thickness
- In micrometres or gauge: 1 mil is 0.001 inch, about 25 µm. Garment flat bags are usually listed at 1.0 to 1.5 mil; state your figure and tolerance.
- Closure and print
- Heat seal, adhesive flap, tie or zip; air or hanger holes; print colours; and any suffocation warning, with its wording and position.
- Food contact and use
- Whether the bag touches food, and whether it serves goods sold in Bangladesh or for export. Both change the papers needed.
Standards and tests for polyethylene bags
- ISO 8351-2, ISO 7965-2 and ISO 8367-2
- ISO standards for sacks of thermoplastic film: the method of specification, the drop test and dimensional tolerances. Name them for industrial film sacks and liners.
- ISO 4593, ISO 527-3 and ISO 6383-2
- Film tests for thickness by mechanical scanning, tensile properties and Elmendorf tear. A report should give each value with its method.
- EU 10/2011 and 21 CFR 177.1520
- Food-contact rules for plastics; the US rule covers polyethylene. Ask for a declaration of compliance; the EU overall migration limit is 10 mg per dm² of contact surface.
- BDS 1910:2016 and BDS 1976:2020
- Bangladesh Standards from BSTI on polyethylene for contact with food, and on testing overall migration from plastics. Ask which of these standards your film meets.
Lead times and delivery
Time depends on the film and the print. A running resin with plain or one-colour print moves faster than a new colour, an additive, new print plates or a food-contact test. Sample approval and quantity count too. Roptan confirms the sample and dispatch dates and the minimum per size and print in the quote.
Roptan delivers to your factory or warehouse anywhere in Bangladesh, with the count per pack on the packing list, any test reports and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Bags for goods sold inside Bangladesh go ahead only after the current polythene notification has been checked for that use.
Buying polyethylene bags for export
Polyethylene bags usually enter under HS 3923.21, sacks and bags of polymers of ethylene; polypropylene film bags fall under 3923.29. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram, with a food-contact declaration where the bag touches food. EU importers may ask how the bag meets Regulation (EU) 2025/40, which applies from 12 August 2026 and aims to make all packaging on the EU market recyclable by 2030.
Questions buyers ask
Are polyethylene bags allowed in Bangladesh?
It depends on the bag and its use. Section 6A of the Environment Conservation Act 1995 lets the government ban or regulate polythene and polypropylene items by gazette notification, with a proviso for items exported or used in export. Confirm the current notification before ordering bags for use inside Bangladesh; Roptan checks it with you.
What thickness should a polyethylene bag be?
It depends on the load, contents and handling. Garment flat bags are usually listed at 1.0 to 1.5 mil, about 25 to 38 µm; sacks and liners for heavier goods usually need thicker film. Ask for a sample at the quoted thickness and a measurement by ISO 4593.
Can you supply compostable bags instead?
Compostable bags are a different material. Ask for a certificate against ISO 5412:2022, for industrial compostable plastic shopping bags, or EN 13432:2000, for packaging recoverable through composting. BSTI has adopted the first as BDS ISO 5412:2023. Without a certificate, a compostable claim is unproven.
How do I compare quotes for polyethylene bags?
Compare grams of film per bag: size, gussets, flap and thickness set it, and the resin rate and prints come on top. If one quote is lower for the same size, check for thinner film or a different resin, and ask for thickness, resin and bag weight on every quote.
How soon will I hear back about FIBC jumbo bags and woven sacks?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
