Buying leather handbags in Bangladesh

A leather handbag carries everyday things on handles or a shoulder strap, built soft or around a metal frame. Brands and importers abroad order them under their own label, and shops and gift buyers in Bangladesh order them too. The panels are large, so marks in the leather and shade differences show easily.

When you buy from a leather handbag manufacturer in Bangladesh through Roptan, you deal with us only: we ask for the tannery's papers before quoting, place the design with a verified maker, load-test the sample's handles and inspect the bulk.

Kinds of leather handbag

Tote bags

A medium to large bag with two longer straps and an open top, no flap or zip. Choose it for work and shopping; add an inner zip pocket for valuables.

Satchels

A larger soft-sided case, usually leather, often with two top handles and a shoulder strap. Choose it for office use; in canvas it is usually called a messenger bag.

Shoulder and crossbody bags

Named by strap length: on the shoulder or across the body. Choose them for everyday carry, and state the strap length and whether it adjusts.

Clutches and wristlets

Small bags carried in the hand; a wristlet adds a short strap worn like a bracelet. Choose them for evening and gift ranges, where edges are seen up close.

Frame bags

A metal frame supports the leather and often closes with a kissing lock. Choose it for a structured look, and brief the frame and lock as hardware.

How to brief a leather handbag manufacturer in Bangladesh

Leather by panel
Name grade and tannage for body, gusset and strap. Chrome or combination tanning suits soft bags; vegetable tanning gives firmer leather that holds a shape.
Thickness by panel
Each panel in mm with a tolerance, measured to ISO 2589. Hides are not uniform, so a seller quoting one figure is rounding.
Lining and pockets
Name lining material, weight, colour and pockets. Dyed linings fall under the EU azo limit, so reports must cover them.
Handles and straps
Strap length and width, rings, and rivets at stress points. We know of no standard handle test, so state a hang test load and time.
Hardware
Metal and plating for frames, locks, zips and rings. Solid brass or stainless steel resists rust; set salt spray hours for plated parts.
Edges and stitching
Raw cut edges wear down sooner, so ask for painted or burnished edges, and approve stitch length and thread on the sample.

Tests and papers for leather handbags

Chromium VI, EN ISO 17075
For the EU, leather touching skin, handles and straps included, must hold chromium VI below 3 mg/kg. Ask for results per leather and colour.
Azo dyes, ISO 17234-1:2024
The EU azo restriction names handbags among its examples and limits listed amines to 30 mg/kg in dyed parts, linings included.
Colour fastness, ISO 11640 and ISO 11641:2025
Rubbing and perspiration tests show whether dye transfers to clothes, which matters most on light colours.
Nickel release, EN 1811:2023
Where plated rings, studs or clasps touch skin, ask for a report naming each part and its plating.
PFHxA, for water-repellent finishes
Where the leather has a water or stain repellent finish, ask for a PFHxA test, since an EU limit covering accessories such as handbags took effect on 10 October 2026.

What moves the price of a leather handbag

  • Leather grade, tannage and finish for each panel, as leather is bought by area.
  • Panel size: large panels cut clear of scars and holes usually take more hide per bag.
  • Structure: a frame, lining, pockets and reinforcement each add parts and stitching.
  • Hardware: frames, locks, zips and rings, priced by metal and plating.
  • Order size and colours: set-up costs spread over fewer bags, and a custom colour needs its own dyeing batch.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on design, leather and hardware. An existing pattern and a colour the tannery holds move faster; a new shape needs sample rounds, a custom colour waits for a dyeing batch, and load and chemical tests must pass before bulk. Fewer colours lower the minimum. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, to showrooms, shops or offices, with each bag packed as ordered and cartons packed dry and counted by colour. Each delivery carries the packing list, the inspection report, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying leather handbags for export

Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or air freight from Dhaka for samples. Preference schemes can change, so your importer confirms which apply on the shipment date.

What we check for this order

  • Tannery papers before the quoteWe ask for the name and country of each leather's tannery, and its papers, before quoting.
  • Handle load testHandles and straps are loaded to your agreed weight and time on the sample, and again on drawn bulk bags.
  • Panels against the swatchEvery panel's grain, colour and finish is compared with the approved swatch, so shades match within one bag.
  • Final inspectionRandom sampling to ISO 2859-1 at your AQL, for stitching, edges, hardware, lining, colour and grain marks.

Questions buyers ask

Is a canvas bag with leather trim a leather handbag for customs?

Not necessarily. Customs class a handbag by its outer surface, the material visible to the eye, so a canvas body with leather trim may fall in the textile line. Tell us which you want, and have your broker confirm the code against the finished sample.

How strong should handles and straps be?

We know of no standard figure, so you set the load and how long it hangs, and the sample is loaded that way before you approve it. Rivets at stress points and solid brass or stainless steel rings help fixings last.

Where is the leather tanned?

Ask by name. Some makers buy from Savar estate tanneries, where recent reports question the central effluent plant and how many hold an LWG rating; others use imported leather. Roptan asks for the tannery, its country and papers before quoting, and does not promise LWG-certified Bangladeshi leather.

Does an LWG certificate replace chemical tests?

No. LWG audits a tannery's environmental performance, rating it Gold, Silver, Bronze or Audited for 24 months, and says certification does not guarantee a product will pass restricted substance tests. Check the tannery name, site and expiry, and still order chromium VI and azo tests on your lot.

How soon will I hear back about leather goods?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
