Buying leather backpacks in Bangladesh

A leather backpack rides on two shoulder straps, usually as a frameless daypack or a laptop pack with a padded sleeve. It can be full leather or a textile body with leather trim, and the buyer should state which. Brands and importers abroad order them under their own label; offices and shops in Bangladesh order them too.

Before quoting, Roptan asks the leather backpack manufacturer in Bangladesh it matches you with to name the tannery and show its papers. We then agree a strap load test with you, approve the sample and inspect the bulk before delivery.

Kinds of leather backpack

Full leather backpacks

Body, base, flap and straps are all leather, so the outer surface is leather throughout. Choose it when the whole bag must be leather, and brief each panel's leather and thickness.

Textile body with leather trim

A canvas or other textile body with leather on the base, straps, flap or handle. Choose it when leather is a feature, not the whole bag; customs may class it as textile.

Laptop backpacks

A padded compartment holds the computer, with pockets for its accessories. Choose it for office and travel use, and give the laptop size the sleeve must take.

Daypacks

A frameless pack for daily carry, the usual leather backpack form. Choose it for city use and gifts, and state the size, the pockets and the closure, zip or flap.

How to brief a leather backpack manufacturer in Bangladesh

Outer material
State full leather, or a textile body with leather trim, in the order. Customs class a backpack by its outer surface, so this choice also sets the tariff line.
Leather by panel
Grade, tannage and each panel's thickness in mm with a tolerance, measured to ISO 2589: body, base, flap, straps and lining.
Load and straps
State the most weight the pack must carry, strap width and padding, and how anchors are fixed. Leather packs usually have shoulder straps only, so the anchors take the whole load.
Laptop sleeve
Give the laptop dimensions, the sleeve padding and where the sleeve sits in the pack, and approve the fit on the sample.
Zips and hardware
Name zips, buckles, D-rings and rivets, with metal and plating. Solid brass or stainless steel resists rust; for plated parts, set salt spray hours to ISO 9227.

Tests for leather backpacks

Chromium VI, EN ISO 17075
For the EU, leather parts that touch skin, straps included, must hold chromium VI below 3 mg/kg. Ask for a test on each leather and colour.
Azo dyes, ISO 17234-1:2024
The EU azo restriction's example list does not name backpacks, but it is open, so ask your buyer. Dyed textile bodies and linings are tested to ISO 14362-1.
Leather strength, ISO 3376, ISO 3377-2:2025, ISO 3379
Tensile strength, double edge tear and ball burst on the leather lot used, not a tannery's generic sheet. The standards give methods; you set the minimum values.
Colour fastness to rubbing, ISO 11640
Shows whether dye rubs off onto clothes where the back panel and straps sit, which matters most on light colours.

What moves the price of a leather backpack

  • Outer material: a full leather body usually uses more hide than a textile body with leather trim.
  • Leather grade, tannage and yield: large panels cut clear of scars and holes take more hide.
  • Padding, a laptop sleeve and extra pockets, which add parts and stitching.
  • Zips and hardware, by metal, plating and any salt spray hours you set.
  • Order size and colours: set-up costs spread over fewer packs, and a custom leather colour needs its own dyeing batch.

Lead times and delivery

Time depends on the build. An existing pattern and a leather colour the tannery holds move faster; a new design needs sample rounds, a custom colour waits for a dyeing batch, a trimmed pack also needs its fabric, and the strap load and chemical tests must pass before bulk. Fewer colours lower the minimum. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Roptan delivers anywhere in Bangladesh, to offices, shops or warehouses, each pack wrapped as ordered and cartons packed dry against monsoon damp. Each delivery carries the packing list, the inspection report, any test reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying leather backpacks for export

Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or air freight from Dhaka for samples. Your broker confirms the tariff line against the finished sample before documents are made.

What we check for this order

  • Tannery papers before the quoteBefore quoting, we ask which tannery made the leather, in which country, and for its papers.
  • Outer material as orderedWe check every bulk panel matches your choice of full leather or leather trim, so the documents match the goods.
  • Strap anchors under loadStraps are loaded to your stated weight and time on the sample, and the anchors rechecked on drawn bulk packs.
  • Final inspectionRandom sampling to ISO 2859-1 at your AQL, for zips, stitching, edges, hardware, lining and grain marks.

Questions buyers ask

Will a leather backpack keep the rain out?

Only to a degree. Leather resists water only partly, chrome-tanned usually better than vegetable-tanned, and the US FTC leather guides allow a keeps-water-out claim only for a product that keeps water from its contents. Specify a water resistance test to EN ISO 5403-1 or 5403-2 with the result you need.

How strong should the straps be?

We know of no standard load test for a leather daypack, so you set the weight and the time. The sample is hung or carried at that load before you approve it. As the shoulder straps usually take the whole load, ask for rivets at the anchors.

Is a canvas pack with leather trim still a leather backpack?

Not always for customs. Rucksacks are classed by the outer surface visible to the eye, so a textile body with leather trim may fall in the textile line rather than the leather one. Tell us which build you want, and have your broker confirm the code on the finished sample.

Where does the leather come from?

From a tannery you should know by name. Makers may use leather from the Savar tannery estate, where recent reports question the central effluent plant and the tanneries' LWG status, or imported leather. Roptan asks for the tannery and its papers before quoting, and does not promise LWG-certified leather from Bangladesh.

How soon will I hear back about leather goods?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
