Buying jute tote bags in Bangladesh

A tote is a large bag, usually unfastened and open at the top, with parallel handles rising from the sides. Jute totes serve as reusable shopping bags, and brands abroad sell them or give them away as promotional items. At home, the Agriculture Secretary said in July 2026 that steps were being taken to bring in jute-yarn school bags.

Three things decide whether a tote works: how it hangs, what is inside and how the print looks. As your jute tote bag supplier in Bangladesh, Roptan sources from verified makers and settles all three before bulk: drop, lining, closure and print area go into the order, then the strike-off and the bulk are checked.

Kinds of jute tote bag

Open gusseted totes

The usual form in listings: a base gusset and cotton webbing handles, offered in several colours. Choose it for retail and everyday carry; the gusset adds volume without widening the bag.

Flat totes

No gusset, so the tote holds less for the same width. Choose it for documents, books and conference packs, where a slim bag matters more than volume.

Lined totes

A jute outer with a cotton lining sewn inside. Choose it for a gift or retail tote that should feel finished inside; the lining adds cost and weight.

Zip-top totes

A zip closes the top, which strictly makes the bag more than a tote, so name the closure in the order. Choose it when contents must stay put.

What to give a jute tote bag supplier in Bangladesh

Size and capacity
Width, height and gusset, measured flat, with a tolerance. In listings, a 380 x 380 mm tote with an 80 mm gusset holds 11 litres; 340 x 340 mm with 150 mm holds 17.
Handle drop
Handle length alone does not show whether a tote goes over the shoulder. State the drop from the bag's top edge to the top of the handle.
Cloth weight
State g/m² on the finished cloth. Listings usually show 270 to 320 g/m², and BDS 1023:2011 names a 270 g/m² hessian grade.
Inside
Lining, closure and any pockets, each spelt out. Every addition changes cost, weight and the surface left for printing.
Print area and colour
Print size and position: one listing allows 250 x 240 mm on an 11-litre tote. Colour references are usually indicative only, so match shade to a physical sample.

Tests and rules that apply to jute totes

Bangladesh test methods
We found no Bangladesh standard for jute totes. BDS 1091:2017 tests seam strength, laminates included, and BDS 1865:2013 is a drop test for jute bags.
ISO 105-X12 and ISO 105-B02
Colour fastness to rubbing, since a tote rubs on clothes, and to artificial light. Set the pass grade yourself: we found no neutral grade for printed jute.
REACH Annex XVII, entry 43
The EU bans azo dyes releasing listed amines above 30 mg/kg in textile articles in long skin contact, handbags among the examples. Test dyed webbing and prints per colour.
Directive (EU) 2024/825
From 27 September 2026 the EU bars generic claims such as "eco-friendly" without recognised proof. Print the specific facts, such as unlaminated jute with cotton handles.

What moves the price of a jute tote bag

  • Raw jute, which usually comes in from July to September and rose in price after floods, exporters say.
  • Cloth weight and size: a deeper gusset or a bigger body uses more fabric.
  • A lining, a zip or pockets, each a second material and extra sewing.
  • Handle material, from cotton webbing in a stock colour to padded jute or rope.
  • Print colours and quantity per design, since each colour needs a screen and makers usually price by quantity tier.

Lead times and delivery

An open tote in a size and cloth the maker already sews usually ships sooner than a lined, zipped or pocketed design, which needs a new pattern and a sample. A printed run waits for artwork approval and a strike-off, and lab tests add days. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum per design in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver the totes folded flat in cartons to your office, shop or venue, counted against the packing list, with any lab reports ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). For events, say how many totes each carton should hold.

Buying jute tote bags for export

Jute totes usually enter under HS heading 4202, which names handbags and shopping bags; your customs broker confirms the line. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram (Chittagong) with a REX origin statement where EU GSP applies. Bangladesh is due to leave least developed country status on 24 November 2026, so we confirm duty and origin papers per shipment.

What we check for this order

  • Handle drop and attachmentWe measure the drop against the order and check the handles are sewn where the sample has them.
  • Print against the strike-offWe check print size, position and shade on bulk totes against the approved strike-off.
  • Inside as orderedWe check lining, zip and pockets are present and match the approved sample.
  • Smell, mildew and samplingWe check for odours untypical of jute and mildew staining, and accept the lot on agreed AQL sampling.

Questions buyers ask

What is the difference between a tote and a shopping bag?

A tote is open at the top with parallel handles rising from the sides, and often serves as a reusable shopping bag or a promotional gift. A shopping bag may be laminated or padded for heavy groceries. Tell us the use and we specify the bag to suit.

Can jute totes be washed?

Not reliably. A Bangladeshi study lists washability among jute's shortcomings, and we found no wash fastness result for printed jute bags. If washing matters, test the print to ISO 105-C06, write only care wording you can support, or choose a cotton or juco body.

How long should tote handles be?

We found no standard drop for shoulder carry. Listings usually show handles of about 520 to 530 mm, but length alone does not decide it: state the drop from the top edge and approve a sample tried on the shoulder.

Can we print a reuse figure on our jute totes?

Not from the studies usually quoted: they measured cotton and polypropylene bags, not jute, and we found no life cycle figure for jute. The EU also bars generic environmental claims from 27 September 2026. State what the tote is made of and claim only what you can prove.

How soon will I hear back about jute bags?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
