Buying jute baskets and bags in Bangladesh
Jute baskets and bags take in shopping and gift bags sewn from jute cloth, baskets coiled from jute rope or braided from plaited jute, and storage boxes. Importers usually buy them through a trading or exporting firm; retailers and corporate gift buyers in Bangladesh buy them too. For a jute basket and bag manufacturer in Bangladesh, the fibre grade, the build and the dye decide the handle, the tests and the customs heading.
Roptan takes your design and quantity and sources the order from a verified maker. We fix the fibre grade, build and trims in writing, have dyed lots tested, and open cartons for mould and insects before sealing. You deal with Roptan only.
How to brief a jute basket and bag manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Fibre grade
- Tossa jute is generally softer, silkier and stronger than white jute; coarser fibre suits stiff work. Ask which grade the sample used.
- Build
- Sewn jute cloth, coiled rope or braided plait. It sets the stiffness, the fibre per piece and the customs heading.
- Size and set
- Outer size in cm with a tolerance, handle length for bags, and every size in a set so the pieces nest as quoted.
- Dye and colour
- Natural or dyed, against a physical colour standard. Dark dye can mark clothes and contents, so ask for rubbing fastness.
- Lining, handles and coating
- Any lining, handle material and lamination described in writing, so the bulk matches the sample and your product claims.
- Packing
- Dry goods in cartons with desiccant, no dimethyl fumarate sachets, and heat-treated wood for any crates or pallets.
Tests and rules for jute baskets and bags
- REACH Annex XVII entry 43
- Bars azo dyes that release listed amines above 30 mg/kg in textile articles in prolonged skin contact. Ask for an amine test on dyed lots.
- ISO 105-X12 and ISO 105-C06
- Colour fastness to rubbing and to washing. Rubbing matters most on a bag; washing only if it is sold as washable.
- REACH Annex XVII entry 61
- Bars dimethyl fumarate, once packed in anti-mould sachets, above 0.1 mg/kg in articles on the EU market. Use plain desiccant instead.
- EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115)
- Jute and basketwork are not in Annex I of the regulation, so a plain jute basket or bag is outside it. A solid wooden base or handle is the part to check.
Lead times and delivery
Time is set by the order, not a fixed range. It grows with a new shape or size, a dyed colour that needs lab dips and tests, extra sample rounds, and the monsoon, roughly June to September, when drying slows. Phytosanitary papers and heat-treated crates add a step before loading. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to shops, hotels, offices and venues, counted by piece and set, in dry cartons with a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Gift bags can be packed per recipient on request.
Buying jute baskets and bags for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Textile shopping bags usually fall under HS heading 4202 and plaited baskets under 4602, while a basket coiled from jute rope may sit elsewhere: your customs broker confirms the code before the invoice. Documents usually include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS claims, test reports and a phytosanitary certificate where required.
Questions buyers ask
Which jute grade is used for soft bags?
Usually tossa jute, which is generally softer, silkier and stronger than white jute; coarser fibre suits work where stiffness matters more than handle. Ask which grade the approved sample used, and we hold the bulk to it.
What HS code does a jute basket go under?
It depends on the build. A basket plaited directly to shape usually falls under heading 4602, but rope is outside that chapter, so a basket coiled from jute rope may be classed elsewhere. Your customs broker settles the code, and we describe the build so it can.
Does the EU deforestation regulation apply to jute bags?
Not to plain jute goods: jute, textile bags and basketwork are not in Annex I of Regulation (EU) 2023/1115. Wood is, so a solid wooden base, handle or frame on the piece is the one point to check with your compliance team.
Do you test dyed jute for banned azo dyes?
Yes, for each dyed lot on request. The EU limit is 30 mg/kg of listed amines in textile articles in prolonged skin contact. Whether your bag counts as skin contact is your compliance team's call, so we get the report rather than assume an exemption.
How soon will I hear back about handicrafts and baskets?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
