Buying bamboo and cane crafts in Bangladesh
Cane in the trade is rattan, a climbing palm: whole stems make frames and legs, and the peeled outer layer becomes weaving strip. Bamboo is split into strips for baskets, trays and decor. Bangladeshi makers produce cane sofas, chairs, tables, trays and screens, and bamboo baskets for farm and fishing use; importers and hotels buy both. A bamboo and cane craft manufacturer in Bangladesh has to answer for treatment, finish and where the material came from.
Roptan takes your design and sources it from a verified maker. We agree the cane or bamboo, treatment and finish in writing, keep the species and harvest records a US declaration needs, check bulk pieces for insect damage, and confirm the papers before loading. You deal with Roptan only.
How to brief a bamboo and cane craft manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Material
- Whole cane for frames and legs, peeled strip for the weave, or split bamboo. Name each part, as they behave differently.
- Cane source
- Local or imported cane. Makers usually use imported cane for sofas, chairs and tables, so ask which the sample used.
- Use and setting
- Indoor and dry, or damp rooms and outdoors. Untreated bamboo can last some years indoors but under a year when wet.
- Treatment and finish
- Name the preservative and the finish in writing. Boron is common but washes out when wet, so damp use needs a sealing finish.
- Construction
- Woven, lashed, pinned or glued, and how frame joints are fixed. Furniture should be judged on a sample carrying weight.
- Harvest and drying
- When the bamboo was cut and how long it dried. Culms cut when sugar content is high are usually more prone to borers.
Rules and papers for bamboo and cane exports
- US Lacey Act declaration
- Since 1 December 2024 (Phase VII), USDA APHIS asks for declarations on products of bamboo and rattan, giving genus, species and country of harvest. Cultivated bamboo is exempt.
- EUDR (Regulation (EU) 2023/1115)
- Bamboo, rattan and basketwork are not in Annex I. Wooden parts, such as a timber frame or shelf, are in scope and need checking.
- Phytosanitary certificate
- Issued by the Plant Quarantine Wing of the Department of Agricultural Extension where the importing country requires one; your broker confirms.
- REACH Annex XVII entry 61
- Bars dimethyl fumarate, once used in anti-mould sachets, above 0.1 mg/kg in articles on the EU market. Use plain desiccant.
Lead times and delivery
Time is set by the order, not a fixed range. It grows with new designs and furniture samples, with treatment and finish that must cure, and with the monsoon, roughly June to September, when damp slows drying. Bamboo is ideally cut a few months before the wet season, so supply can also set the date. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh we deliver to hotels, resorts, offices and shops, furniture wrapped against knocks and damp, counted by piece and set, with a packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).
Buying bamboo and cane crafts for export
For importers we quote FOB Chattogram. Bamboo and rattan basketwork have their own HS lines, 4602.11 for bamboo and 4602.12 for rattan, while cane and bamboo furniture sit in Chapter 94; your customs broker confirms the code. Documents usually include the commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, a REX statement for EU GSP or UK DCTS claims, a phytosanitary certificate where required, and the species data for a US declaration.
Questions buyers ask
Is cane the same as rattan?
Yes, in the trade cane means rattan, a group of climbing palms. Whole stems serve as frames and legs, and the outer layer is peeled into strips for weaving. A good brief names which part goes where, since a strip weave and a whole-stem frame behave differently.
Does my US shipment need a Lacey Act declaration?
Usually, yes. Since 1 December 2024 APHIS asks for declarations on products of bamboo and rattan, with genus, species, quantity, value and country of harvest. Products of cultivated bamboo are exempt, but wild or unknown-origin bamboo is not, so we keep the maker's records.
Can boron-treated bamboo be used outdoors?
Not on its own. Boron is a common bamboo preservative, but it washes out when wet and does not stop rot by itself. For damp rooms or outdoor use, agree a sealing finish in writing, or choose another material for that use.
Does the EU deforestation regulation cover cane furniture?
Bamboo and rattan are not among the regulation's commodities, and its wooden furniture lines do not cover bamboo or cane furniture. A piece with a timber frame, top or shelf is different: the wood can bring it into scope, so have it checked.
How soon will I hear back about handicrafts and baskets?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
