Buying grey scales in Bangladesh

A grey scale is a card of paired grey chips that a tester holds beside a washed or rubbed specimen to grade the result, from 5 for no visible change down to 1. USDA counted 342 dyeing, printing and finishing facilities in Bangladesh in April 2026, from BTMA data, and those that run lab dips and fastness tests grade the results on these scales.

A scale wears with handling, and a box that still cites a withdrawn edition is an old reference. A grey scale supplier in Bangladesh should know which edition is current. Roptan sources from verified sellers, checks the standard, year and batch certificate on each scale, and delivers. You deal with Roptan only.

Kinds of grey scale

Scale for change in colour

Pairs of chips, grey against grey, to ISO 105-A02. Choose it to grade how far the tested specimen itself has changed in shade, for example after a wash test.

Scale for staining

Pairs of chips, grey against white, to ISO 105-A03. Choose it to grade colour picked up by the adjacent fabric in a wash test and by the cloth in a rubbing test.

Nine-step scales

Five steps plus the half steps between them give ratings of 5, 4-5, 4, 3-4, 3, 2-3, 2, 1-2 and 1. Choose nine steps when reports must show half grades.

AATCC scales

The US counterparts: AATCC EP1 for colour change and EP2 for staining, both in 2025 editions. Choose them when a buyer's manual names AATCC methods; they are separate references from the ISO scales.

Chromatic transference scale

AATCC EP8 rates staining on undyed cloth against chips in five hues rather than greys. AATCC TM8 allows it for crocking; choose it only where the buyer or the method names it.

How to brief a grey scale supplier in Bangladesh

Which scales
Change, staining or both, and how many sets, with spares, since soiling is what ends a scale's working life.
Standard and edition
ISO 105-A02:1993 and ISO 105-A03:2019 are current. A staining scale sold to the 1993 edition of A03 is made to a withdrawn standard.
ISO or AATCC
European retailers are usually said to use ISO methods and US retailers AATCC. The EU took about 49 percent of garment exports in FY2025-26, so a lab may need both.
Steps and mask
Five-step or nine-step, and an assessment mask with each scale; makers also sell the mask on its own.
Viewing kit
Grading puts the light at about 45 degrees to the fabric, the viewer roughly square to it. AATCC sells a 45 degree viewing stand and a neutral grey mounting card.
Certificate
A certificate of conformity naming the standard, the batch number and the year of manufacture.

Grey scale standards and their status

ISO 105-A02:1993
Grey scale for assessing change in colour. ISO reviewed and confirmed it in 2025; earlier editions are withdrawn.
ISO 105-A03:2019
Grey scale for assessing staining, confirmed in 2025. It replaced the 1993 edition, now withdrawn, so check the year on the box.
AATCC EP1-2025 and EP2-2025
The US scales for colour change and for staining. Each has an appendix for checking whether a scale is still suitable for use.
ISO 105-A05, A04 and A11
Instrument routes instead of the eye: A05 turns readings of colour change into a grey scale rating, A04 assesses staining by instrument, and A11 sets grades by digital imaging.

What moves the price of a grey scale

  • Scope: a change scale, a staining scale or a matched set of both.
  • Steps: a five-step scale, or nine steps with half grades.
  • Mask: whether an assessment mask comes with each scale.
  • Standard: ISO or AATCC, and the edition the scale is made to.
  • Paperwork: a batch certificate of conformity with the year of manufacture.

Lead times and delivery

Grey scales are sold in Dhaka, so a common ISO scale can move quickly. AATCC scales, a specific edition or several matched sets take longer if they must be brought in, and so does waiting for a batch certificate to be found. Roptan confirms the dates in the quote.

Roptan delivers the scales to your lab anywhere in Bangladesh in their original packaging and protective wallets, with the batch certificate and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). One maker suggests labelling each scale with the date it is first used and putting it back in its wallet after every grading, since soiling, not age, is what ruins a scale.

What we check for this order

  • Edition on the boxWe check that each scale is made to ISO 105-A02:1993, ISO 105-A03:2019 or the AATCC edition your buyer names, not a withdrawn one.
  • Batch certificateWe match the certificate's batch number and year of manufacture to the scales delivered.
  • Right scale for each testWe check that you receive change and staining scales, or the chromatic transference scale, as your methods require.
  • ConditionWe check that the chips are clean and unscratched, masks are present and each scale arrives in its wallet.

Questions buyers ask

How long does a grey scale last?

As long as it stays clean. One maker says unused scales keep almost indefinitely and that soiling from handling and frequent use ends their life; it suggests replacing a scale after about 12 months in a busy commercial lab. AATCC EP1 and EP2 each include an appendix for checking whether a scale is still suitable.

What does a grade of 4-5 mean?

A half step between grades 4 and 5 on a nine-step scale. Grade 5 means no visible change, or no staining, and may be given only when no difference can be seen. Each lower grade is a larger difference, and whole and half grades come from the same scale.

Can a spectrophotometer replace the grey scale?

For some tests. ISO 105-A05 converts instrument readings of colour change into a grey scale rating, and AATCC EP7 is the US instrumental alternative, though not for samples treated with fluorescent whitening agents. Use the route the method your buyer reports allows.

Is a scale made to a Chinese national standard acceptable?

Read the certificate. Change scales made to the Chinese national standard GB/T 250 are sold in Dhaka, and its 1995 edition identically adopted ISO 105-A02:1993. Ask which standard and edition year the certificate names, check it against the method your buyer reports, and confirm that the buyer accepts it.

How soon will I hear back about textile testing and colour lab?
