Buying flip-flops in Bangladesh

A flip-flop is a flat sole held on the foot by a Y-shaped strap, the toe thong, which passes between the first and second toes. The sole is usually EVA foam, rubber or PVC. Kinds of flip-flops

EVA flip-flops

Soles of EVA (ethylene-vinyl acetate) foam: light, easy to form and cheaper than natural rubber. Its vinyl acetate content, usually 1 to 40 percent by weight, changes how the foam behaves, so name the grade.

Rubber flip-flops

Natural rubber soles are vulcanised, cured with heat in the mould rather than simply cooled like plastic. Recycled rubber, such as old bicycle tyres, is a niche option.

PVC flip-flops and PVC straps

PVC soles and straps are usually injection moulded, and a clear or coloured PVC strap on an EVA sole is a common pairing. Phthalates are used mainly to soften PVC, so test the PVC parts for them.

Fabric strap flip-flops

Straps of fabric, leather or suede on a foam or rubber sole. Choose them for a printed or woven strap, and check the toe post: a strap that rubs causes blisters.

How to specify flip-flops

Sole material and grade: EVA, natural rubber, PVC or TPE, with the grade. A seller can offer one style in several sole materials, so the quote must name one.
Sole thickness: In millimetres with a tolerance; supplier listings for EVA soles usually give a range such as 13 to 20 mm. Thickness and pairs per carton drive the quote and container fill.
Hardness: Shore A to ISO 48-4:2018 for rubber and to ISO 868 for PVC. For EVA foam, an agreed hardness in Asker C or Shore C to ASTM D2240, with a tolerance.
Strap fixing: Plugs through the sole are the usual fixing. No footwear standard sets a pull-out force, so agree the force and the method with the lab and write both into the order.
Sizes and packing: EU sizes step by one Paris point, two-thirds of a centimetre; ISO 19407:2023 covers conversion to other systems. State pairs per size, one pair per poly bag and pairs per carton.

Tests and limits for flip-flops

REACH Annex XVII entry 50: Limits each of eight PAHs to 1 mg/kg in rubber or plastic parts touching the skin. PAHs come from carbon black and extender oils, so black soles and straps need the test.
REACH Annex XVII entry 51: Since July 2020, DEHP, DBP, BBP and DIBP are limited to 0.1 percent of the plasticised material in articles generally. Test PVC straps and soles in every colour.
ISO 20871:2018 and ISO 4649:2024: Outsole abrasion: ISO 20871 for any sole material, ISO 4649 the rotating drum method for rubber. You set the maximum loss.
ISO 13287:2019: Slip resistance. It is written for protective footwear, so state the floor and conditions for the test.

What moves the price of flip-flops

Lead times and delivery

Timing depends mostly on moulds and tests. A style the maker can run on moulds it already holds moves faster than one needing a new mould for each size. Should I choose EVA or rubber flip-flops?

Choose by use and budget. EVA foam is light, easy to form and cheaper than natural rubber, which suits beach and promotional ranges. Natural rubber is vulcanised in a heated mould and suits buyers who ask for rubber. Either way, fix grade, thickness and hardness in the order.

How strong should a flip-flop strap be?

No footwear standard sets one. The ISO footwear methods cover abrasion, flex, tear, tensile strength and sole adhesion, but none is a strap pull-out test. Agree the force and the method with the lab before sampling, and have pairs from bulk tested.

Which chemical tests do flip-flops need for Europe?

Under REACH Annex XVII, entry 50 covers PAHs in rubber and plastic parts touching the skin, and entry 51 covers four phthalates in plasticised material such as PVC straps.
