Buying energy meters in Bangladesh

An energy meter records the electricity a home, shop, factory or machine uses, usually in kilowatt hours, and electronic meters can also log demand, voltage and power factor. Buyers in Bangladesh include developers and building owners sub-metering tenants, factories metering lines and generators, and panel builders. Distribution entities had installed 87.50 lakh prepaid meters by June 2026.

Instead of searching for an energy meter manufacturer in Bangladesh yourself, send Roptan the meter schedule. We source from verified makers and importers, have each model quoted with its class, registers and test standard, check the type test reports and seals, and deliver. Or post the schedule on our requirement board.

Kinds of energy meter

Direct-connected static meters

Single or three-phase electronic meters with the load current passing through the meter. Choose them for homes, shops and tenant sub-metering up to about 200 A.

CT-operated meters

Three-phase meters fed through current transformers, so the meter sits away from the service conductors. Choose them for loads above about 200 A and for main incomers.

Prepaid meters

Meters that supply electricity only against credit paid in advance; a relay cuts the supply when credit runs out. Choose them for tenants and shops where unpaid bills are a risk.

Smart meters

Meters that record consumption, voltage, current and power factor and send it by two-way communication. Choose them when you need remote reading or time-of-day tariffs.

Meters with a detached display

The metering unit sits in a sealed box while the display, or none at all, is placed elsewhere. Choose them where meters sit in a locked room.

How to specify an energy meter

Phases and connection
Single or three phase, direct-connected or CT-operated. For CT meters, give the CT ratio and secondary current so the meter is set to match.
Accuracy class
Class 0.5, 1 or 2 for direct-connected meters under IEC 62053-21; 0.1 S, 0.2 S or 0.5 S for CT-operated meters under IEC 62053-22.
Registers
State what to record: kWh, kvarh, maximum demand and its averaging period, such as a quarter or half hour, and any time-of-day tariff.
Payment mode
Postpaid or prepaid. For prepaid, say how credit is loaded and what happens when it runs out.
Communication
For smart meters, name the IEC 62056 parts supported and the system that will read the data.
Sealing and tamper
List the seals, tamper alarms and event logs you want; a type test does not cover tamper detection.

Standards and type tests for energy meters

IEC 62052-11 (2020 edition)
General requirements and type tests for AC and DC meters: functional, mechanical, electrical, marking, electromagnetic and climatic. It added tests for sealing provisions and time-keeping accuracy.
IEC 62053-21 (2020 edition)
Static active energy meters of classes 0.5, 1 and 2. It added type tests for fast load current variations and conducted disturbances from 2 kHz to 150 kHz.
IEC 62053-22 (2020 edition)
Transformer-operated static meters of classes 0.1 S, 0.2 S and 0.5 S, for CT-connected billing and main incomers.
IEC 62056 series
DLMS/COSEM meter data exchange. The application layer part was revised in 2023, so ask which edition the meter supports.

What moves the price of an energy meter

  • Phases and connection: a three-phase CT-operated meter is a different build from a single-phase direct meter.
  • Accuracy class: a tighter class is usually a separate design, type tested to its own part of IEC 62053.
  • Prepaid function: the relay, credit interface and its software add parts.
  • Communication: a two-way module and its integration with your reading system add cost.
  • Registers and logging: demand, reactive energy, time-of-day and event logs add memory and firmware.
  • Tamper features: extra seals, sensors and alarms add parts and testing.

Lead times and delivery

We give no standard figure. Off-the-shelf models with standard registers are usually quicker than meters with custom tariffs, a new communication module or firmware set to your reading system. Large lots, imported modules and tests you want to witness add time. Roptan confirms the dates and any minimum order in the quote.

We deliver to your store or site anywhere in Bangladesh, sealed and labelled by serial number, with the schedule showing which meter goes where. CT meters can go straight to the panel builder. You receive the type test reports, the seller's accuracy test record for each serial number and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). If a meter will bill a utility account, ask the utility what it accepts before ordering.

What we check for this order

  • Class and editionsWe check the class on each plate and that the type test reports cite the 2020 editions, not the withdrawn 2003 ones.
  • Seals and tamper featuresWe check the sealing points and the tamper alarms or logs you specified, since the type test does not cover them.
  • CT settingFor CT-operated meters we check that the programmed CT ratio matches the CTs on your schedule.
  • Communication trialFor smart meters we ask for a reading trial against your system, using the IEC 62056 parts named in the quote.

Questions buyers ask

How far has prepaid metering gone in Bangladesh?

BSS reported 87.50 lakh prepaid meters installed by June 2026, under a phased plan to bring all of the country's over 5 crore subscribers onto smart prepaid metering. The stated aim is to cut non-technical loss, put by one official at 5 to 7 percent at customer level.

Class 1 or class 0.5 S: which do we need?

It depends on the connection. Direct-connected meters fall under IEC 62053-21, in class 0.5, 1 or 2. A CT-operated meter for a main incomer or billing point falls under IEC 62053-22, in class 0.5 S or tighter, and the CTs feeding it should carry a class to suit.

What is the difference between a prepaid and a smart meter?

A prepaid meter works on credit paid in advance and cuts supply when it runs out. A smart meter records more and talks both ways with a central system. One meter can be both; specify the payment mode and the communication separately.

Does a type test report prove the meter resists tampering?

No. IEC 62052-11 does not cover detecting or preventing tampering, though it does test sealing provisions. Ask the seller to list tamper features and alarms in the quote, and check them on a sample.

How soon will I hear back about transformers and switchgear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?
