Buying distribution transformers in Bangladesh

A distribution transformer takes the 11 kV supply down to the 0.4 kV that buildings and machines use. It stays energised day and night, often at part load, so its no-load loss runs every hour. Utilities in Bangladesh buy these units in tendered lots; factories, developers and hospitals buy one or two for a substation of their own.

Roptan takes your requirement to a verified distribution transformer manufacturer in Bangladesh and asks every seller to quote the same kVA, cooling, taps and guaranteed losses, so the offers compare line by line. We check test papers and fittings, then deliver. You deal with Roptan alone, or post the job on our requirement board.

Kinds of distribution transformer

Pole-mounted

Fixed to a utility pole, so it takes no ground space. Choose it for an overhead 11 kV feeder along a road or in a village.

Pad or plinth-mounted

Sits on a concrete pad or plinth, in a locked steel case or a fenced yard. Choose it for a factory or building substation on its own ground.

Oil-immersed

Core and windings sit in refined mineral oil, which insulates and cools them; conservator units can carry a gas detector relay. Choose it outdoors, where walls and oil containment can be built.

Cast resin dry-type

Windings cast in a solid block of resin that keeps out moisture and corrosion, with no oil to contain. Choose it for rooms inside buildings.

Amorphous core

An amorphous metal core can cut no-load loss by roughly 70 to 80 percent against crystalline steel, but the unit is larger and heavier. Choose it for light loads over many years.

How to brief a distribution transformer manufacturer in Bangladesh

kVA, not the label
Some standards call units up to 5,000 kVA distribution transformers while others stop far lower, so state the kVA rating.
Voltages and insulation
Usually 11/0.4 kV here, three phase at 50 Hz, plus the basic impulse insulation level your network asks for.
Guaranteed losses
No-load and load losses as guaranteed figures. A distribution unit runs mostly below full load, so the no-load figure weighs most.
Ambient and cooling
State the room or yard temperature and the cooling class. Insulation life roughly halves for every 7 to 10 °C of extra operating temperature.
Taps
Usually an off-circuit tap changer, adjusted with the unit de-energised. Ask for an on-load changer only for voltage-sensitive loads, and state the range.
Location and fittings
Indoors, an oil unit usually needs fire walls, containment and sprinklers. List the gas relay and the oil level and temperature gauges you want.

Standards and papers for a distribution transformer

IEC 60076-1
The general part for power transformers, distribution sizes included; the 2011 edition added vacuum, pressure and leak tests on tanks.
IEC 60076-11
Dry-type transformers up to 72.5 kV, with climatic and environmental classes and fire-behaviour classes for units up to 1,000 kVA. State the classes the room needs.
IEC TS 60076-20
A technical specification on energy efficiency. Buyer and maker agree the evaluation method, so name it in the enquiry.
PCB-free oil statement
Written confirmation that the oil is mineral oil free of PCB, the toxic liquid once used in transformers and hard to dispose of.

What moves the price of a distribution transformer

  • Core material: an amorphous core needs more winding material and gives a larger, heavier unit, and cuts no-load loss sharply.
  • Loss guarantees: lower guaranteed losses usually cost more to buy and less to run, so weigh both.
  • Insulation: an oil unit indoors brings fire walls and containment into the installed cost.
  • Size and cooling: a higher kVA or a forced cooling class usually means a larger unit with more material in it.
  • Fittings: a gas relay, gauges or an on-load tap changer each add to the bill of materials.

Lead times and delivery

Build times vary between sellers and designs, so we give no standard figure. Time is usually shorter for a common rating such as 250 kVA at 11/0.4 kV on the seller's existing design. It grows with a special loss guarantee, a resin or amorphous core, imported fittings, a large lot or witnessed tests. Roptan confirms the date and any minimum order in the quote.

We deliver anywhere in Bangladesh and plan the lift with the seller, who installs and commissions the unit. You receive the routine test report per serial number, the oil statement, the drawing and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). If an LT panel is part of the job, order both together: in many plants they form one line-up.

Buying distribution transformers for export

Bangladesh exports few of these. EPB data for FY2025-26 shows only small values under HS 850421 and 850422, the oil-immersed lines that cover distribution sizes, so most units serve the home market. Importers get a quote FOB Chattogram with the usual shipping papers and test reports.

What we check for this order

  • Losses against the guaranteeWe compare the no-load and load losses on each routine test sheet with the quoted figures before the unit leaves.
  • Rating plateWe check kVA, voltages, taps and cooling class on each plate against the order.
  • Oil and fittingsWe get the PCB-free oil statement and check that the gas relay and gauges in the quote are fitted.
  • Classes for resin unitsFor dry-type units we check that the climatic, environmental and fire-behaviour classes on the report suit the room.

Questions buyers ask

Is 250 kVA a standard size in Bangladesh?

It is a common one: BPDB has bought 11/0.4 kV, 250 kVA units in tendered lots, so sellers know the design. For your own substation, size from your maximum demand and growth, not from the utility's choice.

Where does a distribution transformer end and a power transformer begin?

There is no single line. One common description puts distribution units below about 200 kVA, while some national standards stretch the name to 5,000 kVA. State the kVA and voltages, and sellers quote to those.

Is an amorphous core worth the extra size?

Often, at light load. Its no-load loss can be roughly 70 to 80 percent lower than a steel core, but it weighs more. Set the extra price against the saved loss at your tariff.

Can the transformer go inside our building?

Yes. An oil unit indoors usually needs fire walls, containment and sprinklers; a cast resin unit has no oil, and IEC 60076-11 gives it fire-behaviour classes up to 1,000 kVA. Your consultant and the fire rules for the building settle it.

How soon will I hear back about transformers and switchgear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
