Buying circuit breakers in Bangladesh

A circuit breaker opens a circuit on overload or short circuit and, unlike a fuse, can be reset and used again. Breakers sit in distribution boards, LT main boards and medium-voltage switchgear. Panel builders, contractors, factories, developers and utilities in Bangladesh buy them by the schedule.

A breaker that carries the load but cannot interrupt the fault is a hazard. Roptan takes your breaker schedule to a verified circuit breaker manufacturer in Bangladesh or an importer, has each line quoted with its breaking capacity and test standard, and checks the plates before delivery. Or post the schedule on our requirement board.

Kinds of circuit breaker

Miniature circuit breakers (MCB)

Thermal-magnetic breakers on DIN rail for final circuits, with a fixed trip setting. Choose them for lighting, sockets and small loads in distribution boards.

Moulded-case circuit breakers (MCCB)

Larger low-voltage breakers, often with adjustable trips, for feeders and sub-mains. Like MCBs, they are usually replaced rather than repaired once the contacts wear.

Air circuit breakers (ACB)

Low-voltage power breakers for main switchboards below 1,000 V, with adjustable trips and replaceable contacts. Choose them for transformer incomers and large feeders.

Vacuum circuit breakers (VCB)

Medium-voltage breakers that break the arc in a vacuum bottle, used up to about 40.5 kV. They work with separate current transformers and protective relays, not built-in trips.

SF6 circuit breakers

Gas breakers used mostly at transmission voltages, often inside compact gas-insulated switchgear, not in ordinary LT panels.

DC circuit breakers

Breakers rated for direct current, needed because a DC arc does not go out on each half cycle. Choose them for solar arrays and battery banks.

How to specify a circuit breaker

Rated current, curve and poles
For an MCB, give rated current, trip curve letter and number of poles. The curve letter sets the instantaneous trip level in multiples of rated current.
Breaking capacity
The short-circuit current the breaker can safely interrupt. It must at least equal the prospective fault current where the breaker is installed.
Voltage and AC or DC
State the system voltage and whether the circuit is AC or DC. An AC breaker is not a substitute on a solar or battery circuit.
Trip settings
For MCCBs and ACBs, give the frame size and setting range: a 400 A frame can be set to trip at 300 A.
Medium-voltage scope
For a VCB, list the current transformers, relays and control supply it needs, because the trip comes from them.

Standards and test papers for circuit breakers

IEC 60898-1
AC miniature breakers for household and similar use: up to 440 V between phases, 125 A rated current and 25,000 A rated short-circuit capacity.
IEC 60947-2 (2024 edition)
Low-voltage industrial breakers up to 1,000 V AC or 1,500 V DC. The 2024 edition replaced the 2016 one, so ask which edition the type test report cites.
IEC 62271-100
AC breakers on systems above 1,000 V. The 2021 edition covers direct making and breaking tests; synthetic testing sits in IEC 62271-101.
Breaking and let-through data
The rated breaking capacity and let-through energy for the actual model quoted, from its test report, not from a catalogue family.

What moves the price of a circuit breaker

  • Breaking capacity: a breaker that can interrupt a higher fault current usually costs more than one of the same rated current with a lower rating.
  • Voltage class and arc medium: air, vacuum and gas breakers are different designs, and a medium-voltage breaker usually costs more than a low-voltage one.
  • Trip unit: an adjustable trip usually adds cost over the fixed trip of an MCB.
  • Frame size and poles: a larger frame or a fourth pole adds material.
  • Medium-voltage extras: the current transformers, relays and control supply a VCB needs are priced on top.

Lead times and delivery

We give no standard figure. Common MCB and MCCB ratings are usually quicker to supply, while ACBs with special trip units, DC breakers and medium-voltage breakers with relays usually take longer, especially when imported to order. Roptan confirms availability, dates and any minimum order in the quote.

We deliver loose breakers anywhere in Bangladesh, or to the panel builder making your board. Each box should carry the model, rating and breaking capacity on the label. You receive the seller's documents for each model, including the test certificate where you asked for one, and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3).

Buying circuit breakers for export

Low-voltage automatic breakers fall under HS 853620, breakers for voltage up to 1,000 V. EPB data has no line specific to breakers above 1,000 V. Importers get a quote FOB Chattogram with packing list, certificate of origin and test papers. Your customs broker confirms the line for your market.

What we check for this order

  • Breaking capacity against fault levelWe check each breaker's rated breaking capacity against the fault level on your single-line diagram.
  • Schedule matchWe check rated current, curve letter, poles and trip ranges on every plate against your breaker schedule.
  • AC or DC ratingWe check that breakers for solar or battery circuits are rated for DC at the circuit voltage.
  • Test standard and editionWe ask which standard and edition each test report cites and match the report to the exact model supplied.

Questions buyers ask

MCB or MCCB: which do we need?

Under IEC 60898-1, MCBs go up to 125 A with a fixed trip, which suits final circuits. Above that, or where you need to adjust the trip to the load or to coordinate with other breakers, use an MCCB. For a main incomer on a large board, an ACB is usually the choice.

Can we use an AC breaker on a solar DC circuit?

No. A DC arc does not pass through zero every half cycle, so it is harder to put out. Use a breaker rated for DC at the full string or battery voltage, and state DC on the order so the seller does not quote an AC model.

How fast does a breaker clear a fault?

Typically the arc goes out between about 30 and 150 ms after the mechanism trips, depending on age and construction. The let-through energy in that time is a measure of breaker quality, so ask for that figure on the model quoted.

When the contacts wear, do we repair or replace?

It depends on the type. MCBs and MCCBs are usually discarded when the contacts wear. ACBs and medium-voltage breakers have replaceable contacts, so ask the seller who in Bangladesh supplies the parts and does the work.

How soon will I hear back about transformers and switchgear?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.

Who do I deal with?

With Roptan, when Roptan manages the order: we buy from the verified seller and deliver to you. With the supplier directly, when you post on the requirement board and choose a quote yourself.
