Buying energy drinks in Bangladesh
An energy drink is a non-alcoholic drink typically made with high levels of caffeine and sugar, often with taurine, B vitamins and herbal extracts. A UK government document counts soft drinks with at least 150 mg of caffeine per litre as high-caffeine energy drinks. Shops and distributors in Bangladesh buy them by the case, and importers order them under their own labels.
The rules changed in 2026. Reports from 2014 and 2015 said energy drinks sat outside BSTI certification; a gazette published on 29 January 2026 made the energy drink standard, BDS 2043:2025, mandatory. Roptan finds an energy drink manufacturer in Bangladesh licensed for it, checks your label against your market and has caffeine tested on each batch.
How to brief an energy drink manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Caffeine
- In mg per litre and per serving, with the test method. Labels can differ from actual content, so ask for a lab result per batch.
- Other actives
- Taurine, glucuronolactone, B vitamins or extracts, in mg per litre. EFSA's review used typical levels of about 4,000 mg of taurine per litre, not a limit.
- Sugar or sweeteners
- Sugar per 100 ml, or each sweetener by name, so the 'with sweetener(s)' wording Great Britain requires is set early.
- Colours and preservatives
- Name each colour; six, including E110 and E129, carry a children's activity warning in Great Britain. With benzoate and vitamin C together, ask for a benzene result.
- Target market
- Name it before artwork starts. Caffeine caps, warnings, taxes and advertising rules differ from one country to the next.
Standards and labels for energy drinks
- BDS 2043:2025, S.R.O. 33-Law/2026
- The gazette of 29 January 2026 made the energy drink standard mandatory under the BSTI Act 2018, in force two months later, barring sale, distribution and advertising of energy drinks that do not follow it.
- EU and Great Britain caffeine label
- Above 150 mg per litre: 'High caffeine content. Not recommended for children or pregnant or breast-feeding women', then caffeine per 100 ml, beside the name.
- BSTI CM licence and registration
- The plant needs BSTI's CM licence for the energy drink and the packaged-goods registration certificate. BSTI enforces the two together.
Lead times and delivery
As a general guide from the private-label drinks trade, not a Bangladesh figure, a new recipe in your own printed cans usually takes about two to three months, longer for flavour development or bespoke can artwork, and minimums for printed cans usually start at around ten thousand per flavour. A plant without the BDS 2043 licence must get it first; BSTI says most products are licensed within 19 to 34 working days. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan delivers by the case or truckload to distributors and shops, with batch codes, date marks, lab reports where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Distributors should see the BSTI mark and licence number on each can before they stock it.
Buying energy drinks for export
Energy drinks have no customs line of their own; they usually fall in heading 2202, and your broker confirms the line. The US has no formal caffeine limit and treats them as a beverage or a dietary supplement. A 20-foot container usually reaches its weight limit before it is full. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram or CFR.
Questions buyers ask
What caffeine level can an energy drink have?
In Bangladesh, the plant's BSTI licence under BDS 2043:2025 decides, and a change to the caffeine clause is reportedly out for comment until 10 November 2026, so we check the current text. Abroad, your market decides: a December 2025 European Parliament briefing lists Australia and New Zealand at 320 mg per litre and Turkey at 150 mg per litre.
Are energy drinks under BSTI certification?
Yes. Reports from 2014 and 2015 said energy drinks were outside BSTI certification, but a gazette published on 29 January 2026 added Energy Drink, BDS 2043:2025, to the mandatory list. The notification took effect two months after publication, at the end of March 2026, so we check the plant's licence on every order.
How much caffeine is safe for an adult?
EFSA's 2015 opinion finds up to 200 mg in one dose and 400 mg a day safe for healthy adults, and 200 mg a day in pregnancy or breastfeeding. A large can may hold 160 to 200 mg, so set pack size and label with that in mind.
Do some markets restrict energy drinks further?
Yes. Saudi Arabia has taxed energy drinks at 100 percent since 2017, bans their sale in educational and sports facilities and government buildings, and bans their advertising. Rules like these change the pack, the label and the landed price, so name your market before artwork starts.
How soon will I hear back about juices and beverages?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
