Buying bottled water in Bangladesh
Bottled water covers two products in Bangladesh's standards: packaged drinking water, which is ground or surface water treated and disinfected before filling, and natural mineral water, which has a standard of its own. Both are sold in small PET bottles and in large jars for water coolers. Offices, hotels, hospitals, factories, shops and event organisers buy them by the case or the jar.
Water looks the same whatever its quality, so the paperwork does the work. Roptan finds a bottled water manufacturer in Bangladesh whose BSTI licence covers your product, checks that the bottle or jar maker is licensed too, reads the lab report on arsenic and microbiology, and delivers on your schedule.
How to brief a bottled water manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Product type
- Packaged drinking water or natural mineral water. They have separate BSTI standards, so the plant's licence must name the one you order.
- Source and treatment
- Ground or surface water, and each treatment step. Where ozone is used, ask for bromate, which forms when ozone meets bromide and can exceed 10 ppb.
- Arsenic
- Arsenic in the finished water, against WHO's 10 µg per litre guideline. The US limit for bottled water is the same, 0.010 mg per litre.
- Microbiology
- E. coli and coliforms by membrane filtration, plus a colony count. US rules treat bottled water that contains any E. coli as adulterated.
- pH and turbidity
- A pH range and a turbidity ceiling, with the test methods. The US rule caps turbidity at 5 units, a useful benchmark for export.
- Bottle, cap and label
- Size, cap and label design, plus the bottle maker's BSTI licence for BDS 1958 and its resin grade, since the bottle can affect taste.
Standards and licences for bottled water
- BDS 1240:2021 and BDS 1414:2021
- BSTI's mandatory standards for packaged drinking water and natural mineral water. The plant needs a CM licence for its product and the packaged-goods registration certificate.
- BDS 1958:2019
- BSTI's mandatory standard for containers for mineral and drinking water, so the bottle or jar supplier needs a licence of its own.
- BDS CAC RCP 48:2008
- The Codex hygiene code for packaged drinking water, adopted by BSTI: the reference behind a hygiene audit of the plant.
Lead times and delivery
Water under the plant's own label usually ships soonest. Your own label adds time for artwork and printing, and as a general guide from the private-label trade, not a Bangladesh figure, own-label minimums usually start at around ten thousand bottles per size. A plant adding a product to its BSTI licence needs inspection and tests first; BSTI says most products are licensed within 19 to 34 working days. Roptan confirms dates and minimums in the quote.
Inside Bangladesh, Roptan arranges delivery by the case or the jar to offices, hotels, factories, shops and events, with batch codes and date marks, the batch lab report where ordered and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Keep stock in shade and check seals on arrival.
Buying bottled water for export
Plain water enters under HS heading 2201, which excludes sweetened or flavoured water; those go to 2202. A 20-foot container holds about 21.6 tonnes of cargo, roughly 20,000 litres of water plus packaging, so freight per litre is high for a low-value product. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram or CFR, with batch lab reports.
Questions buyers ask
Is bottled water in Bangladesh free of arsenic?
Not automatically. WHO says groundwater in Bangladesh carries high natural arsenic, so treatment must remove it. WHO's guideline is 10 µg per litre, provisional because removal is hard. We ask for arsenic in the finished water, tested by a method such as BDS ISO 17378-1, and compare it with that figure.
What is the difference between drinking water and mineral water?
Packaged drinking water is treated water under BDS 1240:2021; natural mineral water comes from a natural source under BDS 1414:2021. Definitions abroad differ, so check which name your market allows before labels are printed, and make sure the plant's licence names the product you order.
Does bottled water expire?
Sealed, undamaged water usually keeps for a long time, and the printed date is usually set by the maker as a precaution. In Bangladesh the date on the label falls under BFSA's labelling rules, so we check the label carries the dates your buyers need.
Why does some bottled water taste of plastic?
PET can give water an off-taste when acetaldehyde forms while the resin is processed. It is usually a taste issue rather than a safety limit. We ask the bottle maker for the resin grade and preform process, and taste a stored sample before bulk.
How soon will I hear back about juices and beverages?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
