Buying fishing trawlers in Bangladesh

A fishing trawler tows a net, the trawl, through the water to catch fish or shrimp. Trawlers are classed by hull layout, fishing method and how the catch is kept; FAO classifies them by gear. Bangladesh's industrial fleet is reported to include steel-hulled freezer trawlers and smaller wooden-bodied vessels, working the Bay of Bengal under licence.

A fishing trawler manufacturer in Bangladesh can build a hull, but only the licence decides whether it may fish. Under the Marine Fisheries Act 2020, as reported, an industrial trawler needs a licence before fishing and must meet a government-fixed specification. Roptan checks your licence or approval route and that specification before quoting, then sources from verified yards and checks the build.

Kinds of fishing trawler

Stern trawlers

Shoot and haul the trawl over the stern; the larger ones usually have a stern ramp for bringing it onto the deck. Designed to work in most weather, which suits a vessel that must keep fishing in rough months.

Outrigger trawlers

A forward superstructure and an aft working deck. Widely used for shrimp, so ask for this layout for a shrimp boat.

Otter trawlers

Tow one or more parallel trawls held apart by otter boards. Choose one when your gear plan uses otter boards, and match the winch to it.

Freezer trawlers

Carry a freezing plant, so they can stay at sea for long periods. Choose one when the grounds are far from the landing port.

Wet fish trawlers

Keep the catch in ice or refrigerated sea water, so they work close to their landing place with limited time at sea. Choose one for short trips.

How to specify a fishing trawler

Licence and its specification
Start from the licence or approval route and the vessel specification it sets. Size, engine and gear must follow it, or registration can be refused.
Fishing method and gear
Name the method: stern, outrigger, otter or pair trawling, and the target catch. The gear decides the deck layout, winch and engine power.
Working depth
State the depths you will fish. Industrial trawlers are reported to be limited to waters of 40 to 200 metres, with shallower water kept for artisanal fishing.
Keeping the catch
Choose ice, refrigerated sea water or block freezing, and the hold insulation. Larger vessels are more likely to carry processing on board.
Winch and safety release
Ask for winch brakes and safety release systems, fitted on beam trawlers so the boat does not capsize when the trawl snags the sea floor.
Hull material
Say steel or wood. Steel suits a freezer trawler built to class; wood is reported on the smaller vessels in the fleet.

Law, safety agreements and class for trawlers

Marine Fisheries Act 2020
As reported, requires a licence before fishing and a vessel specification fixed by the government for imported or locally built industrial trawlers. Confirm the current rules with the fisheries authority.
Cape Town Agreement 2012
Sets minimum safety requirements for fishing vessels of 24 metres and over, but was reported in 2025 as not yet in force. Use it as a reference, not as law.
Classification society
A class certificate is usually needed to register and insure a ship. For a steel trawler, class records of hull steel and surveys are the usual evidence of build quality.

What moves the price of a fishing trawler

  • Hull size and material: steel or wood, the length, and whether the hull is built to class, each set the steel or timber and the survey work.
  • Catch preservation: a freezing plant and insulated hold are a machinery package that an ice hold does not need.
  • Processing on board: a processing line adds machinery, space and power.
  • Deck machinery: the trawl winch, brakes, safety release and net handling gear for the method.
  • Specification changes: any change the licence specification forces after design adds cost.

Lead times and delivery

We give no typical build time for a fishing trawler. The date moves with the licence and specification approval, hull size and material, the freezing plant and other imported equipment, and the yard's order book. Plan delivery around the sea fishing ban. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh the trawler is handed over after trials with its class or survey records, trial results and proof that it was built to the specification the licence sets, since a trawler that fails it can be refused registration. Ask for the winch, freezing plant and engine manuals and a spare parts list. A VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) follows where it applies.

What we check for this order

  • Licence before the quoteWe see the buyer's licence or approval route before we ask any yard to quote. Roptan does not obtain licences.
  • Built to the licence specificationWe compare the drawings and the fitted engine and gear with the specification the licence sets.
  • Catch hold and coolingWe check that the hold insulation, ice or refrigerated sea water system or freezer works as specified.
  • Winch safetyWe check that winch brakes and safety release systems are fitted and worked before acceptance.

Questions buyers ask

Can you supply a trawler that is licensed to fish in Bangladesh waters?

No. We source the vessel; the licence is the buyer's matter with the fisheries authority. You must hold the licence or have an approval route before ordering, and the build must follow the specification it sets. We check this before any quote, and we make no promise that a licence will be granted.

When is sea fishing banned?

In 2025 and 2026 all fishing in Bangladesh's Bay of Bengal waters was banned for 58 days, from 15 April to 11 June, and a separate 22-day hilsa breeding ban also applies. Fishing in a restricted time is punishable, so plan trials and delivery around these dates.

Should I choose a freezer or a wet fish trawler?

Choose by distance from port. A freezer trawler can stay at sea for long periods because it freezes the catch on board. A wet fish trawler keeps fish in ice or refrigerated sea water, so it must work close to its landing place and its fishing time is limited.

Is the Cape Town Agreement law for my trawler?

No, not yet. It sets minimum safety requirements for fishing vessels of 24 metres and over, but it was reported in 2025 as not in force: it takes effect only after 22 states with 3,600 such vessels between them have joined. It is still a useful safety reference for a steel trawler.

How soon will I hear back about ships and boats?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
