Buying coastal cargo vessels in Bangladesh
A coastal cargo vessel, or coaster, is a shallow-hulled merchant ship that carries cargo along a coastline and into shallow ports. Its hull is not optimised for large open-ocean waves, so the route and sea state come first. Bangladeshi yards build coastal oil tankers, and one is reported to have delivered the country's first LPG carrier.
A coastal cargo vessel manufacturer in Bangladesh quotes against drawings, so two quotes compare only when they rest on the same deadweight, draught and class. Roptan writes one specification with you, sources from verified yards and checks drawing approval, surveys and trials as the build moves.
How to brief a coastal cargo vessel manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Route and sea state
- Name the ports, any open-sea legs and the worst weather the vessel must work in. A shallow coaster hull suits shallow ports, not large ocean waves.
- Deadweight at a stated draught
- Deadweight (DWT) is the total weight the ship can carry: cargo, fuel, fresh water, ballast water, provisions and crew. Quote it at a draught your channels allow.
- Trading area and tonnage
- Say whether the vessel will make international voyages. Cargo ships of 300 gross tonnage and upwards on such voyages carry GMDSS radio equipment under SOLAS Chapter IV.
- Pollution equipment
- Ask which MARPOL annexes apply. Annex V bans putting any plastics into the sea; Annex VI limits sulphur and nitrogen oxide emissions from engine exhausts.
- Class and flag
- Name the classification society and the flag before design starts. Owners need a class certificate to register and insure the ship.
Conventions, class and certificates for a coaster
- SOLAS 1974
- Minimum standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships; as a whole it applies to certain classes of ship on international voyages. Ask which chapters bind your vessel.
- MARPOL Annexes I, V and VI
- The rules on oil, garbage and air pollution from ships. Ask for the equipment fitted for each annex that applies to your trading area.
- International Load Line Certificate
- Ships on international voyages carry load lines marked amidships on each side. Class usually calculates or verifies the freeboard and issues the certificate.
- Class society survey records
- IACS has twelve member societies. The society sets construction rules and surveys the ship in service; ask for the build survey records, not only the final certificate.
Lead times and delivery
We give no typical build time for a coastal cargo vessel. The date depends on size and type, class drawing approval, delivery of the imported engine and equipment, the yard's order book and any change after contract. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum order in the quote.
Roptan arranges the handover in Bangladesh after trials and acceptance. Ask for the class certificate and survey records, which you need to register and insure the vessel, the inclining test results, the load line certificate where it trades internationally, and trial reports. A VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3) comes with the handover where the law requires one.
Buying coastal cargo vessels for export
Bangladesh is reported to have become a ship exporting country in 2008. EPB records exports under HS line 890190, vessels for goods or for both persons and goods, a line that also holds barges. A foreign owner agrees the flag, class and delivery method in the contract, and Roptan confirms them in the quote.
Questions buyers ask
Can a coaster work on the open sea?
Within limits. Its shallow hull lets it use shallow ports, but it is not optimised for the large waves of the open ocean. State the open-sea legs and the worst weather on your route, so the yard designs for them.
Why does deadweight need a draught beside it?
Because deadweight is the weight a ship carries at a given draught, counting cargo, fuel, fresh water, ballast, provisions and crew together. If your channel is shallower than full draught, ask for deadweight at the depth you have.
Does the Inland Shipping Ordinance apply to a coastal cargo vessel?
Not its survey and registration requirement. The Inland Shipping Ordinance 1976 exempts a sea-going vessel with the right to be in a Bangladesh port, or to ply on its tidal waters, from that requirement. Such a vessel is certified under its flag and class, so confirm that route with your flag administration.
Does my coastal vessel need GMDSS radio equipment?
If it is a cargo ship of 300 gross tonnage or more on international voyages, yes: SOLAS Chapter IV requires it. For a vessel that trades only in Bangladesh waters, the flag administration's own rules decide, so ask before the bridge equipment is ordered.
How soon will I hear back about ships and boats?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
