Buying dredgers in Bangladesh

A dredger digs or sucks sediment from a river, channel or harbour bed and moves it elsewhere. In Bangladesh it keeps river routes open and fills land. The shipping ministry said in 2019 that the yearly dredging need was nearly twice the national dredging capacity. A government yard signed its first cutter suction dredger contract in 2022, so local building of that type is recent.

Kinds of dredger

Cutter suction dredgers

A cutter at the suction inlet loosens the bed and a wear-resistant centrifugal pump discharges it through a pipeline or to a barge. Choose one for harder material and for land filling.

Trailing suction hopper dredgers

Trail a suction pipe with a drag head, load spoil into hoppers on board, then dump it through hull doors or pump it out. Usually chosen for maintenance dredging of channels.

Grab dredgers

A crane lowers a clam-shell bucket, often from a crane barge held in place by spuds, steel piles that are lowered and raised. BIWTA's revised plan keeps one 15 cubic metre grab dredger.

Bucket dredgers

Many buckets on a wheel or chain dig the bed mechanically rather than sucking it. Choose a mechanical dredger where digging suits the bed better than suction.

How to specify a dredger

Bed material: Send soil test results: silt, sand, clay or gravel. Cutter suction dredgers are most often used where the bed is hard.
Disposal route: Say where the spoil goes: carried by hopper to a dump site, or pumped as slurry through pipes onto nearby land. Give the pipeline length so the pump can be sized.
Size: Cutter suction dredgers are sized by discharge pipe diameter, as in the 28-inch and 24-inch machines in BIWTA's revised plan; hopper dredgers by hopper volume in cubic metres.
Hoses and floating pipe: Specify suction hoses, armoured discharge hoses and self-floating hoses, which differ in working pressure, buoyancy and armour, plus MS pipes and floaters.
Contaminated sediment: Dredging can release heavy metals and other toxic chemicals from the bed. If tests show contamination, plan dewatering instead of open disposal.
Crew, spares and fuel: State who will run the dredger and where it will be serviced. Public projects have been held back by manpower, repair budgets and fuel supply.

Trials and coating standards for dredgers

ISO 19019:2005: Instructions for planning, carrying out and reporting sea trials of sea-going vessels, usually used as a model for the trial plan. Add a dredging production test agreed in the contract.
ISO 12944: The series on corrosion protection of steel by paint systems. The hull and pontoons sit in water for years, so name the paint system in the order.
ISO 8501-1:2007: Rust grades and preparation grades of uncoated steel, usually used to state how clean the steel must be before painting. Name the grade beside the paint system.

What moves the price of a dredger

Main dredging machinery: the pump, cutter and drives, which BIWTA's revised plan prices as its own line and which moved with the exchange rate.
Exchange rate and specification: BIWTA's revised plan raised main machinery cost by about 6 per cent on these two alone.
Size: a larger discharge pipe diameter or hopper volume needs more power, a bigger pump and a larger hull.
Pipe string: MS pipes, floaters and hoses are priced as separate items and grow with pipeline length.
Operation package: crew training, spares and fuel logistics, which public buyers have found hard to fund.

Lead times and delivery

One public contract in 2022 allowed one and a half years to build four cutter suction dredgers. Delivery of the imported pump, cutter and drives, design approval, the yard's order book and changes to the specification set the date, and public projects have run far past their plans. Inside Bangladesh the dredger is handed over after trials and a production test, with its pipe string, floaters and hoses delivered as one package so it can start work. Ask for the trial and test records, the coating inspection report, pump and engine manuals and a spare parts list, and for crew training before acceptance. Questions buyers ask

Should I choose a cutter suction or a hopper dredger?

Start from the bed and the disposal site. A cutter suction dredger loosens harder material and pumps it through a pipeline, which suits land filling near the river. A trailing suction hopper dredger carries spoil to a dump site and is the usual choice for maintenance dredging of channels.

What size of dredger do I need?

Cutter suction dredgers are sized by discharge pipe diameter and hopper dredgers by hopper volume. BIWTA's revised plan buys 28-inch and 24-inch cutter suction dredgers and a 1,000 cubic metre hopper dredger. Size yours to the volume you must move, the bed material and the length of the pipeline.

Is public demand for dredgers steady?

Not reliably. A BIWTA project from 2018 to buy 35 dredgers had reached 41.77 per cent physical progress by April 2025, and the agency then sought to buy 12 dredgers instead. The Planning Commission questioned the cut. Plan around your own work programme, not the public order book.

Can dredged sand be used for land filling?

Often, yes: pipeline dredgers pump slurry straight onto nearby land, which is how reclamation is done. Test the sediment first, because dredging can release heavy metals and other toxic chemicals from the bed, and contaminated material may need dewatering and controlled disposal instead.

How soon will I hear back about ships and boats?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
