Buying dress forms in Bangladesh
A dress form is a padded body form on a stand, a layer of foam under a cloth cover, so it takes pins. Pattern makers fit, drape and pin garments on it. In Bangladesh, the main buyers are the sampling departments of garment factories, design studios, fashion institutes and boutiques. The customs heading still calls such forms tailors' dummies.
A form that looks right can still fail in the sample room: pins that will not go in straight, shoulders that do not fold, a size that drifts from your block. A dress form manufacturer in Bangladesh should be held to your chart. Roptan writes size, foam and stand into the order, tests a sample with pins and garments, and checks the bulk.
How to brief a dress form manufacturer in Bangladesh
- Size chart
- Bust, waist, hip, neck, shoulder and back length in cm, measured to ISO 8559-1 and matched to the block your buyers send.
- Pinnability
- Fully pinnable forms have a thick foam layer, so pins go in straight; thinner foam needs pins pushed in at an angle. Ask for the foam thickness.
- Cover fabric
- Muslin is the usual cover, since it behaves well and wraps tightly. State the cover colour, and on dark covers ask for a rubbing test so samples are not marked.
- Shoulders
- Collapsible shoulders let tops go over the head and come off without stretching. Say whether every size needs them.
- Stand
- A wheeled base, the height range of the pole, and a cage bottom to help with hemming if your room works that way.
- Size changes
- For small changes, a fixed form close to the size can be padded up, which avoids the seam gaps of a dial form.
Tests and papers for dress forms
- ISO 8559-1
- Defines how body measurements are taken. Put it on the chart, so the form's bust, waist and hip are measured the way your pattern room measures.
- ISO 105-X12 rubbing
- Colour fastness to rubbing, from the ISO 105 series. Ask for a result on dark covers, so the form does not mark light samples.
- ISO 2859-1:2026
- AQL sampling for lot-by-lot inspection. Agree what counts as a defect: size out of tolerance, a loose cover, a shoulder that will not fold.
- ISO 9001
- A certificate for the seller's quality system, not the form itself. Read its scope and date; the 2026 edition is now current.
Lead times and delivery
Forms in the seller's existing sizes are usually the quickest. A form built to your buyer's block, extra sizes, a special cover fabric, collapsible shoulders on a model that lacks them and bifurcated legs all add time, as does a sample that fails the pin or size check. Roptan confirms the sample date, bulk date and minimum in the quote.
We deliver dress forms to sample rooms and design studios in Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, Chattogram and elsewhere, the stand packed beside the form and the cover kept clean. Delivery comes with the packing list and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Check each form stands level and its shoulders fold before signing.
Buying dress forms for export
Dress forms are the tailors' dummies of HS heading 9618, so they usually enter under that heading; your customs broker confirms the code. EPB records about 10.43 million US dollars of exports on the heading in FY2025-26, mainly to the United States, Japan and France, though the line also covers animated displays. Roptan quotes FOB Chattogram.
Questions buyers ask
Can a display mannequin be used as a dress form?
No. Display mannequins have hard shells that stop pins, so you cannot pin, drape or fit on them. A sample room needs a form with foam under a cloth cover, in your exact size. Basic display forms are less accurate in proportion, so keep them for showing garments.
Fixed or adjustable dress form for a factory sample room?
Usually fixed professional forms, one per size you sample. Adjustable forms cover several sizes, but turning the dials opens gaps at the seams that catch pins and change the shape. If a buyer's size sits between forms, pad a fixed form up instead.
How pinnable should the form be?
Fully pinnable for pattern work. A thick foam layer lets pins go in straight and hold a drape; a thin layer takes pins only at an angle. Ask the seller for the foam thickness and test the sample with your own pins before approving bulk.
Do you supply forms for trousers?
Yes. A bifurcated form has legs, so trousers and shorts can be fitted on it, and it costs more than a standard professional form. Give the waist, hip, rise and inside leg in centimetres, and have the seller confirm the leg construction before the sample.
How soon will I hear back about mannequins and display?
Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
Who do I deal with?
