Buying baled PET bottles in Bangladesh

Baled PET bottles are used drink and other bottles, collected, sorted by colour and pressed into strapped bales for a recycler's own wash line. In Bangladesh they usually reach balers through scrap dealers and other informal collection, and much of the bottle supply is washed into flake locally. Kinds of PET bottle bale

Clear bales

In the input guidelines of Plastics Recyclers Europe (PRE), up to 5% light blue and no opaques. Choose them when your wash line produces clear flake.

Clear/blue bales

Up to 20% light blue, no opaques. Choose them when your flake buyers accept a blue cast.

Light blue bales

More than 20% light blue PET, no opaques. Choose them for flake that will be coloured anyway.

Green bales

Bottles colour-sorted to green, a cut seen beside blues and clear. Choose them to keep green out of your clear and blue streams.

Mixed colours bales

More than 80% transparent colours mixed, with up to 5% opaque colours. Choose them for mixed or dark flake, where colour sorting is not needed.

How to brief a baled PET bottles supplier in Bangladesh

Colour grade: Name the grade and its limits, such as clear with up to 5% light blue and no opaques.
Bottle size and origin: PRE's guidelines class bottles up to 1.5 L, 3 L and 5 L, and state origin, such as commercial, municipal or deposit collection.
Barred materials: List what must stay out: glass, rubber, wood, sacks, textiles, silicone, medical and hazardous waste, PET-G, C-PET and PS among them.
Bale build: Only bottle material in the bale, with no cardboard end pieces or film wrap, and stable, stackable bales strapped with wire.
Bale size and weight: State your own with a tolerance. One UK trade guide notes there is no formal agreed specification for bottle bales, and balers use their own sizes.
Moisture and dirt: Set a deduction for wet or dirty bales. You pay by weight, and monsoon rain adds both.
Food-contact route: If your flake is for food contact, PRE says input should hold at most 5% articles from non-food uses.

Guidelines, codes and rules for PET bottle bales

PRE Recycling Input Characterisation Guidelines: The European recyclers' bale grades, barred materials and bale build for clear and blue PET bottles, a ready basis for an order.
ASTM D7611/D7611M: The practice behind resin identification code 1 for PET. A bale should hold only bottles marked or confirmed as PET.
EN 15348:2024: Characterises PET recyclates once the bottles are washed into flake; agree which values a wash trial must meet. The 2014 edition was withdrawn in May 2024.
Basel entries B3011 and Y48: Bales are plastic waste. Clean, single-polymer PET for recycling is B3011; mixed or contaminated bales are Y48 and need prior informed consent.

What moves the price of baled PET bottles

Colour grade: clear bales usually cost more than coloured or mixed ones, since clear flake can be dyed any colour.
Barred materials and dirt: every kilogram of non-PET in the bale is paid for at the bale price.
Moisture: wet bales weigh more, so the deduction terms change the real price.
Sorting depth: bottle size, origin and food-contact sorting add work at the baler.
Bale build and handling: dense, well-strapped bales are easier to stack, load and store.

Lead times and delivery

Bale supply follows collection, so a tight colour grade or a single bottle size can take longer to fill than a mixed grade. Rain in the monsoon slows collection and leaves bales wet, and export loads wait on container bookings at Chattogram. Roptan confirms dates, quantities and any minimum in the quote.

We deliver bales by truck to your plant anywhere in Bangladesh, weighed on a BSTI-verified weighbridge, with the packing list, the slip and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Store them on hard standing, away from dirt, oil and dust, and keep them covered: PET bottles carry rain and mud into your wash line.

Buying baled PET bottles for export

Bales travel as waste of plastics under HS heading 3915, with PET under 3915 90 in tariffs that split it. China took 99% of Bangladeshi PET flake until it closed to such imports in 2018, so check your own country first. Textile millers asked in December 2024 for a ban on exporting PET bottles; we found no adoption, but we check the current position before quoting FOB Chattogram with the exporter's ERC.

What bale size and weight should I ask for?

Your own, with a tolerance. One UK trade guide notes there is no formally agreed specification for bottle bales, and balers in Bangladesh use their own sizes. Choose dimensions and weight that suit your handling and truck, and put them in the order.

Which items must stay out of a PET bottle bale?

PRE bars minerals, rubber, wood, sacks, hazardous and medical waste, glass, oxo-degradable material, food contamination, silicone, PET-G, C-PET, PS and textiles. Cardboard end pieces and film wrapping should not be in the bale either.

Can these bales feed a food-contact recycling line?

Only if the input is controlled. PRE says PET for food-contact rPET should contain at most 5% articles from non-food uses, and your own decontamination process must be approved. Say so before the bales are sorted.

Are the Basel plastic waste amendments the same as the Ban Amendment?

No. The plastic waste amendments, in force since 1 January 2021, bind every Party, Bangladesh included, and decide whether a bale needs prior informed consent. The Ban Amendment is a separate instrument, in force since 5 December 2019, that bars hazardous waste exports from OECD and EU member countries to other countries; the UN Treaty Collection does not list Bangladesh among its Parties.

How soon will I hear back about PET flakes?
