Buying plant extracts in Bangladesh

A plant extract is what remains when a solvent such as water, alcohol or a mix of the two draws the wanted constituents out of a plant. It comes as a fluid extract, a tincture, a soft extract or a dry powder. Supplement, food, cosmetic and herbal medicine makers buy it as an ingredient.

Two extracts sold under one plant name can differ in solvent, ratio and carrier, so a plant extract exporter in Bangladesh must work to your written specification. Roptan finds a verified processor, puts the ratio, solvent and limits in writing, checks the lab report on your batch and hands the goods over.

Kinds of plant extract

Powdered extracts

A dry extract, the usual form for capsules, tablets and sachets. Ask whether a carrier was added to help it flow, which one and how much.

Fluid extracts and tinctures

Liquid extracts in water, alcohol or a mix. Choose them for syrups, drinks and liquid herbal products, and ask for the solvent strength, since it changes what the liquid holds.

Native extracts

Nothing added and no processing beyond the extraction. Choose one when your label wants the plant's own profile, and compare offers by ratio and solvent.

Standardised and enriched extracts

Processed after extraction to raise wanted constituents, lower unwanted ones, or both, sometimes with a carrier. Choose one when your formula needs a set level of a marker compound.

How to brief a plant extract exporter in Bangladesh

Botanical name and plant part
Genus, species and the part used: root, leaf, bark, seed or flower. A common name can cover several plants.
Form and carrier
Powder, liquid, tincture or soft extract. For a powder, say whether a carrier is allowed, which one and its maximum share of the weight.
Solvent and its strength
Water, ethanol or a mix, with the strength stated, for example ethanol 78 percent m/m, not a bare "ethanol extract".
Ratio as a range
The drug extract ratio is plant used per unit of extract. Plant material varies, so the genuine ratio is normally a range, such as 3.0 to 5.5:1.
How the ratio is counted
Count the plant as used, natural water included, and the extract without carrier added later. Otherwise two ratios are not comparable.
Use and market
Supplement, food, cosmetic or herbal medicine, and the country of sale. Limits, papers and labels follow the use and market.

Tests and papers for plant extracts

Certificate of analysis per batch
Shows the solvent, ratio range, residual solvents, heavy metals and pesticide residues, plus microbial counts and the marker assay where agreed, on your batch.
Regulation (EU) 2023/915
Limits supplements as sold to lead 3.0, cadmium 1.0 and mercury 0.10 mg/kg, and pyrrolizidine alkaloids to 400 micrograms per kilogram where botanical extracts are used.
Residual solvents
An extract made with a solvent other than water, alcohol or their mix must meet pharmacopoeial residual solvent limits. Ask for the result.
Phytosanitary certificate
Issued by the Plant Quarantine Wing of the DAE for vegetable saps and extracts, with no other plant product mixed into the consignment.

What moves the price of a plant extract

  • The plant and part used: scarce or seasonal raw material costs more per kilogram of extract.
  • The ratio: a higher ratio needs more plant material for each kilogram of extract.
  • Enrichment: steps that raise a marker compound or remove unwanted constituents add processing.
  • The solvent: one other than water or alcohol brings a residual solvent test on every batch.
  • Tests per batch: metals, residues, alkaloids and the marker assay, run on each lot.

Lead times and delivery

No production time is standard for an extract. It depends on whether the processor holds the plant in stock, the harvest season, any enrichment step and the tests your batch needs. For a dry extract, the phytosanitary certificate usually has to be applied for at least 15 days before shipment. Roptan confirms the dates and the minimum in the quote.

Inside Bangladesh we deliver extracts to food, cosmetic and herbal product makers by covered truck or courier, in sealed containers marked with the batch number, with the certificate of analysis and a VAT invoice (Mushak 6.3). Makers of herbal medicine for Bangladesh answer to the DGDA; we pass on the batch papers they need.

Buying plant extracts for export

Bangladesh's export data has no separate line for herbal extracts: its vegetable saps and extracts figure is agar-agar, a seaweed product. Treat an extract export as bespoke. The seller, holding an ERC, ships FOB Chattogram (Chittagong), or samples by air from Dhaka, with invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, phytosanitary certificate and certificate of analysis.

What we check for this order

  • Ratio and solvent on paperThe certificate of analysis shows the solvent, its strength and a ratio range that match your order, with any carrier stated.
  • Lab results on your batchHeavy metals, pesticide residues and residual solvents tested on the batch you receive, not an earlier lot.
  • Regulated plant screenEvery botanical name is checked first. We do not source narcotic plant material, ephedra or wild protected plants.
  • Certificate matches the goodsThe phytosanitary certificate names the extract shipped, with no other plant product mixed into the consignment.

Questions buyers ask

What does 10:1 on an extract quote mean?

It is trade shorthand for ten parts of plant to one of extract. The European Medicines Agency asks for the genuine ratio, which is normally a range because plant material varies. Ask for the range on the certificate of analysis, and whether a carrier was counted.

Do EU supplement limits apply to the extract itself?

Not directly. Regulation (EU) 2023/915 sets its limits on the supplement as sold, so your supplement maker sets its own limits for the extract, usually tighter ones. Write those into the order and test them on the batch.

Can you source an extract of any plant?

No. We check every botanical name before quoting and do not source opium or other narcotic plant material, ephedra or wild protected plants. CITES-listed species need permits, and herbal medicines for Bangladesh fall under the DGDA, so those enquiries go case by case.

Should I choose a native or a standardised extract?

Choose by your formula and label. A native extract has nothing added and no processing beyond extraction; a standardised one is processed to hold a set level of a constituent. Compare offers on the same ratio, solvent and carrier basis.

How soon will I hear back about betel leaves and plant products?

Within 48 hours of a complete requirement, with a price and a delivery date. A requirement is complete when it has the quantity, where it is needed and by when.
